David Fincher was attached for awhile to direct this, with Morgan Freeman to spearhead as producer (who would also have one of the starring roles).
The talks began between Fincher's "Fight Club" release and the production of "Panic Room" throughout 2001 & 2002.
Finding extreme difficulty to condense such material into a workable and film-able screenplay, the project only remained in the development phase during this time period. As further delays occurred, David Fincher continued to say that he was attached to the project in interviews that spanned 2007, 2008, & into 2011.
In early 2022, the film is now set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, with Alcon Entertainment as the primary Production Company; Revelations Entertainment's Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary are involved as producers due to their previous work on the project and their currently-owned rights.
