There are 3 different versions. The theatrical version, the First Cut and the Clerks X-edition.
Kevin Smith was on a very limited budget for the film. Since he shot the movie in a store using fluorescent lightning, he was told by his DP that shooting under such lights would result in green coloured tinting on the characters on the processing of the film. The solution would have to buy a proper lightning rig that would cost Kevin around $2000, which he could not afford. His DP suggested that shooting black & white would be the cheapest solution to fix the problem.

They are indeed! RST Video, where Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier actually edited the film, has long since closed. However, Quick Stop is still there. The address is in the Trivia section for this film.
