For three decades the story of stone creatures come to life has both entertained and fascinated viewers. Originally airing on a program block associated with light hearted children’s entertainment showed that animation could be much more than just “kids stuff”. Let us revisit the mysterious and enchanted world of Disney’s Gargoyles.
Created by producer Greg Wiseman, the series stood out against its contemporaries at the Disney Afternoon program block. Unlike other shows focused on gags and slapstick comedy, Gargoyles took a darker and more episodic approach similar to Batman: The Animated Series, which aired around the same time.
The series saw a group of Gargoyles who had been frozen for millennia awaken in New York City. They decide to make the city their new home and defend it from various threats.

"Batman: The Animated Series" wound up being as definitive an account of the Dark Knight as its title suggested. So when a new Batman cartoon finally came afterwards, it was destined to never escape the shadow of "Btas." But "The Batman" (which aired from 2004 to 2008) made a noble effort and remains one of the more unique spins on the Caped Crusader.
"The Batman," developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, was the first animated Batman in 12 years that was unconnected to the DC Animated Universe (The shared setting that began with "Batman: The Animated Series" and concluded with "Justice League Unlimited").
Bruce Wayne in "The Batman" was voiced by Rino Romano, and Joker by Kevin Michael Richardson, rather than the beloved Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker duo. Bruce Timm modeled "Batman: The Animated Series" on the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, while Jeff Matsuda gave Gotham City an anime makeover.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when BoxLunch's new "Avatar: The Last Airbender" collection attacked.
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is arguably one of the most celebrated and influential American animated shows of the 21st century. The cartoon features incredible worldbuilding on par with Tolkien's Legendarium, stunning action and character writing, and a mix of episodic storytelling and serialization that carried the mangle of shows like "X-Men: The Animated Series," and "Gargoyles" in helping usher the age of serialized cartoons.
The show was a huge hit (though not enough to avoid getting briefly canceled), getting both critical acclaim and success at awards shows. In the years since the fantastic end to the show, fans have continued to carry the torch of "The Last Airbender," keeping the Fire Nation flame going by turning the smallest moments and characters from the cartoon into memes,...

When Star Trek returned to television screens after two decades in 1987, it looked very different from its predecessor. Gone were James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Bones, most of whom planned to return in the original sequel series Star Trek: Phase II. In their place stood a bald Shakespearean actor, the breakout star of the television miniseries Roots, and a member of Muppet creator Jim Henson’s team.
From those unlikely beginnings, Star Trek: The Next Generation grew to match and, for some, exceed the original series. Much of that success came from the cast, who had a far easier camaraderie than their predecessors and, some might argue, a more impressive resume. Before and after Trek, these actors became beloved figures in genre cinema and television, proving that they are even more than the crew who boldly went where no one had gone before.

Brooklyn’s biggest horror film festival was back for another year of terrifying horror features from across the globe.
A strong mix of feature films, horror shorts, and revered genre classics were shown to sold-out audiences. There was even a sneak preview of Paramount ’s Stephen King prequel project, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, that once again proved to audiences that sometimes dead is, in fact, better. Some of the biggest movies to come out of 2023’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival are already set to premiere on Shudder and Tubi, but the festival’s entire schedule should be mandatory viewing for curious genre fans.
Some of this year’s standout Bhff entries include Property, a Brazilian home invasion horror film that becomes a brutal deconstruction of class and status. Laborers revolt when they learn that their livelihood is being taken away from them, which confines their target to an armored car and progressively removes her options.

Disney Branded Television is in early development on a live-action reboot of the mid-90s animated television series Gargoyles for Disney , Deadline has confirmed. The project hails from Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, the reboot centers around Goliath, the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.
Created by Greg Weisman, the original Walt Disney Television Animation series, which aired from 1994-1997, revolved around nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles that turn to stone during the day. They were awakened after being trapped in stone form for a thousand years in medieval Scotland , and are now battling in modern-day New York City.

Disney’s “Gargoyles” are coming back, TheWrap has learned.
The beloved animated series, which ran in syndication on weekday afternoons for three seasons from 1995 to 1997, is set to return, this time as a live-action series for Disney from James Wan’s Atomic Monster, writer Gary Dauberman (who wrote all three “Annabelle” movies) and Disney Branded Television. Dauberman is attached as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the new series.
“Gargoyles,” which centered on a band of monstrous warriors who, long ago, were encased in stone and cursed to stay that way unless they were lifted above the clouds, find themselves awoken in modern day Manhattan after a billionaire zealot placed them atop his latest towering skyscraper. (They remain stone during the day but become flesh-and-blood at night.) The Gargoyles then have to figure out what life in the contemporary world is like, while also attempting to rid New York City of some of its crime.

Movies and television are, of course, primarily visual mediums; having looks that kill goes a long way for an actor's career. However, one must not discount sound completely — having an extraordinary voice can also make an actor that much more desirable.

John Carpenter's 1982 remake of "The Thing" is, like many of Carpenter's movies, possessed of a nihilistic streak. The titular Thing is a living mass of alien tissues, existing without form, able to invade a host, consume it, and replicate it down to its very brain functions. It can look and sound like anyone. The Thing doesn't appear to be intelligent and lives only to consume and perpetuate itself. Carpenter's film is set at a remote Antarctic outpost populated by bored, surly, mostly bearded men, tired of their isolated job and only barely staving off mind-crushing boredom. When the Thing infiltrates their ranks, paranoia immediately takes over, and the characters all begin suspecting one another. Only the stalwart pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell) holds it together enough to seek out the creature in a logical fashion.
By the end of the film, most of the outpost will be burned down, and...

Sure, the genre has been popular before, and each decade has given us hugely influential and fantastic stories of magic and fantastical creatures, from "Xena: Warrior Princess" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But when "Game of Thrones" exploded onto the scene with a mature, gory, politically charged fantasy story, it kickstarted a fantasy TV race, forcing every studio and streaming service to run and make their own fantasy epic, no matter how much they had to pay for it.
Meanwhile, animation has always been at the forefront of fantasy television. There were Saturday morning cartoons like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "He-Man," shows like "Gargoyles" that focused more on worldbuilding and sequential storytelling, and also "Dragon Age: Absolution" and "The Dragon Prince," which deliver the kind of epic fantasy storytelling we commonly only see on the big screen.
And then there's "The Legend of Vox Machina.

"American Dragon: Jake Long" came at the right time for The Disney Channel. Though not their first fantasy-adjacent show, it felt like Disney's answer to both "Harry Potter" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender," which came out the same year. This was a hero's journey cartoon about a boy who discovers he's a key part of a massive fantasy world filled with magical creatures, cool villains, and more.
The show followed the titular Jake Long, who is assigned the role of the American Dragon and uses his ability to transform into a dragon to protect the magical creatures that inhabit New York City. Though he still has to find time to go to school and be a normal teenager, he spends his afternoons fighting the evil Huntsman, who wants to kill all magical creatures.
The show was created by Jeff Goode, marking his first animated project as a creator and executive producer.

"We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles!" so begins every episode of the acclaimed '90s cartoon "Gargoyles," which even today feels like a miracle of television. A show with dense lore, complex and mature themes, a serialized story that nevertheless understood the importance of a good standalone episode and simply breathtaking action, "Gargoyles" was and remains like no other show.
Created by Greg Weisman for Disney Television Animation back in 1994, "Gargoyles" follows sentient, humanoid creatures with bat wings who get frozen in stone during the day. They once protected a medieval Scottish castle, until a betrayal killed most of them and froze the rest — who awoke in modern-day Manhattan. The show felt like a fantasy take on the "X-Men," with mythologies from all over influencing its deep lore, including Norse mythology and Arthurian legends, while a healthy dose of Shakesperean influence gave the story gravitas.

After-school cartoons were never cooler than they were in the nineties. Batman: The Animated Series set the tone for how a cartoon could aim higher than just being kiddie fare. But, in the mid-nighties, Disney made an incredible animated series of their own, Gargoyles, which told a highly serialized story about nocturnal creatures which come alive at night and turn to stone by day. To this day, fans of the series continue to beg Disney for a revival series on Disney . Unfortunately, the House of Mouse has yet to grant the request, but if the passion remains, we could see another Gargoyles series down the road.
Gargoyles had the following synopsis: In the Dark Ages, there was a race of heroic warrior monsters known as Gargoyles. These creatures existed as stone during the day, but become flesh and blood at night. One Scottish clan made an alliance with humans to...

The first teaser trailer for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” has become one of the most-watched trailers ever.
The first look at the Steve Caple Jr.-directed sci-fi actioner earned 494 million global, cross-platform views in the first week, according to Paramount. That was well above the other big trailers released last Thursday (courtesy of Ccxp), namely “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (182 million) and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (77 million).
Measured viewership was at 238 million on day one alone, above any previous theatrical trailer in Paramount’s history, and in fourth place for that first 24-hour cycle behind only the second “Avengers: Endgame” trailer (268 million), the first “Avengers: Endgame” trailer (289 million) and the first trailer to Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (355.5 million).

With Neca handling Disney’s “Gargoyles” action figures, what about the video game side of things? Released on the Sega Genesis in 1995, Gargoyles was a treat to play, though it didn’t quite receive the same acclaim as other Disney games on the Genesis. Fear not, as for those who missed it the first time, Disney and Empty Clip Studios are giving us a second chance.
Announced at the D23 Expo, Gargoyles Remastered will be coming to “modern consoles” and PC. Details as to specific consoles were not part of the announcement, nor was a release date announced for the game. However, the game will feature updated visuals and controls.

More action figures of Disney’s “Gargoyles” are on the way from Neca, with the company revealing their “Ultimate” edition figure of the character known as Broadway this week.
The 7″ scale Ultimate Broadway figure joins previously released/announced characters from the animated series including Goliath, Demona, Thailog, Hudson, Lexington and Brooklyn.
Neca previews, “Broadway is many things: optimist, food enthusiast, and cinephile. This Ultimate Broadway figure is fully articulated, and comes with interchangeable heads, interchangeable hands, axe and mace that combine into a larger weapon, meat, popcorn, and more. Comes in display-friendly window box packaging with opening front flap.”
The 90s animated series was produced by Walt Disney Television and centered on literal stone gargoyles that come to life and transform into protectors of NYC at night. Three seasons of “Gargoyles” were produced in total, with fans frequently still begging for its return to this day. The series originally aired...

"Samurai Jack" gave me something I didn't know I wanted as a kid, which was violence. At the climax of the show's "Premiere Movie," Jack defends a pack of hapless dogs from an army of mechanical beetles commanded by the demon Aku. The beetles are impaled, decapitated, blasted by rocket fire. As Jack slices them in half, oil spurts from their severed pipes. Jack is bathed in this black filth. As a child I could not process what I was seeing. The sea of beetles swallowing the red hills, the repeated swing of Jack's sword, and the rictus of his face was like a nightmare. But that is why "Samurai Jack" succeeds, beyond its remarkable style. It delivers everything a kid could want — samurai, monsters, robots — at a level of intensity just outside of their comfort zone.
Jack's story was no nightmare for Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of "Samurai Jack.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield has extended her overall deal with HBO and HBO Max for an additional two years.
Under the terms of the deal, Whitfield will become an executive producer on the HBO basketball drama “Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” and will direct the second half of the show’s upcoming second season. She previously directed two episodes in Season 1, including both the penultimate episode and the season finale. She is also currently an executive producer on HBO and Julian Fellowes’ period drama “The Gilded Age,” directing four episodes during the show’s first season earlier this year.
Whitfield currently runs her Early May production banner, under which she will continue to develop original series for HBO and HBO Max. Among the company’s current development slate is the comedy “Motherland Bounce,” based on the life of rapper Nissim Black with Moshe Kasher onboard as writer.
Whitfield began her career as an actress.

Let’s face it: ’90s kid shows are some of the best out there. And Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network dominated the genre. In October of 2021, actor Brent Spiner's "memoir," was published. Spiner is perhaps best known for playing the android Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," as well as Data's twin brother Lore, his prototype B-4, their creator Dr. Noonien Soong, an ancestor of theirs, Dr. Arik Soong, and a descendent of theirs, Dr. Altan Soong. Spiner has, of course, had a long acting career and has also appeared in films like "Independence Day," TV shows like "Night Court" and "Gargoyles," and voiced famous pop figures like the Riddler ... but Data will always appear at the top of his résumé.

We lost a great one this weekend with Ed Asner. The lovably gruff actor died at 91. Asner was a prolific actor, not only having well over 400 credits to his name, but also still performing roles to the end. Sure, every obituary is going to talk up how well known he was for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and all that, but for many of us, he was a huge part of our childhoods.
Ed Asner did plenty of voice work. More than I can talk about here, but his deep, growly, and at times friendly voice lent itself well to a lot of cartoon characters. Not just the old man from Up, but lots of villains and supporting characters in superhero shows. He was also in FoodFight, but we don’t need to talk about FoodFight.

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Ed Asner on Sunday, reflecting on a career that not only left a mark in television and animation but also in the history of Hollywood labor.
In his illustrious career, Asner won seven Emmys, five of them for his iconic performance as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the spinoff “Lou Grant.” For younger fans, he was known for playing the voices of Hudson on the Disney cult classic “Gargoyles” and Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar Oscar winner “Up,” as well as Santa Claus in the Will Ferrell comedy “Elf” and other Christmas movies and specials.
But along with this, Asner served as president of the Screen Actors Guild during its pivotal strike in 1980, which led to a dramatic 32% increase in minimum salaries. His outspoken activism as a democratic socialist led to clashes with right-wing actors in Hollywood, including Charlton Heston,...

Disney have already admitted that they plan on shifting their focus towards exclusive streaming content, and there are revivals of two beloved animated shows staring them right in the face. The talk of bringing back cult classic Gargoyles may have quietened down drastically over the last few months, but X-Men: The Animated Series has never strayed too far from the headlines.
The longtime favorite might have wrapped up 23 years ago, but since being added to the Disney Plus library, talk of a revival has frequently reared its head. The 76 episodes are comparable in quality to anything the Fox franchise brought to the big screen, and in some cases handled the serious themes much better than any of the movies did.

Gargoyles was a Disney animation way ahead of its time. With its relatively dark tone, complex storylines and Shakespearean themes, the ’90s TV series had more substance than you might realize and it’s managed to maintain a cult fanbase despite being cancelled more than two decades ago.
For fans of the show, getting a Gargoyles fix is now easier than ever as all three seasons have been made available to stream on Disney , but no doubt what the diehards would like more than anything is some brand new episodes, however unlikely that might sound. Still, a series revival might yet become a reality since one of its leading voice actors has admitted that she would jump at the chance to revisit the animation.
Marina Sirtis, who voiced antagonist Demona on the show, told TrekMovie.com that she would love to portray the supernatural villain again, saying:

If you’re a ’90s kid, chances are you’re pretty familiar with Gargoyles, the animated series jam-packed with fantasy, rich characters, and a sprawling world.
Had things panned out differently, Gargoyles would have been the centerpiece of an entire Disney universe, as revealed by Polygon. But history tells us that the cult animated series ended its run in 1997 after just three seasons. Thank the heavens, then, that it’s available to stream right now on Disney , prompting Polygon to catch up with series creator Greg Weisman for a deep-dive interview into Gargoyles, O.J. Simpson, and that less-than-stellar third season.
Speaking of which, if the opportunity presented itself, Weisman would want to go back and redo the entire third season of Gargoyles, believing it to be the weakest of the three.
I’d ignore or write around those 12 stories, and not think about them much. I guess I’d watch them all one more time,...

Animated dark fantasy Gargoyles is a fond memory of many children of the ‘90s (this one included), with many more people discovering the series after its addition to Disney . The combination of several separate issues led to the show’s initial cancellation and subsequent pickup by ABC for a much-maligned third season, but one curious aspect was O. J. Simpson.
After the success of both the show’s 13-episode first season and the accompanying toy line, Disney wanted as much of the series as possible, with the episode count ballooning into a whopping 52 for the second run and a new episode planned to air five times a week. According to series creator Greg Weisman in a new interview, as well as the nigh-impossible timeframe the creatives were given to produce such a huge volume of content, after they had largely managed to do so, the furor surrounding the trial of...
