Since the story is set in a not-too-distant future, the currency used is the ECU (European Currency Unit), which at the time was due to replace in some years the local currencies of several countries within the UE. However, by the time this happened in 2002, the ECU had been renamed "Euro".
The film takes place in 2012.
The name of planet Axturiax, the mining colony where the second half of the story is set, is actually a pun on Asturias, a region in northern Spain, known for its coal mining.
The main part of Ramón Yarritu was written for Ramón Barea. The character was named Ramón after him. Producers Pedro Almodóvar and Esther García wanted a famous actor for the role, and finally was played by Antonio Resines. However, Barea played the character of the Blind Old Man.
The "Priest Robot" at the wedding party is modeled after director Alex de la Iglesia.
