"Over the Garden Wall" creator Patrick McHale always considered Aardman to be the pinnacle of animation, and he was always interested in the art of stop-motion. Though he's worked in some highly influential shows like "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and "Adventure Time," and he did co-write the script to "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," it wasn't until this year that he fulfilled his dream of working in stop-motion — and with Aardman, no less.
Just in time for its 10th anniversary, Cartoon Network released an "Over the Garden Wall" short film from Aardman and McHale, and it's a full circle moment for the animator in more ways than one. As McHale told Inverse, "In some ways, it seems like 'Over the Garden Wall' probably should have been realized in stop-motion all along — it just feels kind of right for that world," and he is absolutely right.

Oasis co-founder Liam Gallagher was not amused after Saturday Night Live’s sketch parodied the infamous fight between him and his brother, Noel Gallagher.
The Oasis frontman responded to tweets about the sketch, which featured James Austin Johnson as his brother, bandmate Noel and Sarah Sherman as himself.
After a fan questioned Gallagher’s thoughts about the bit, he replied on X, calling it “Excruciating.”

In the “Weekend Update” skit, SNL cast members Johnson and Sherman were bickering while using exaggerated English accents.

While playing presidents and high-profile candidates on Saturday Night Live was once exclusively the domain of SNL cast members, in recent years, zeitgeist-y political roles have tended to go to a revolving door of A-list celebrities, including Alec Baldwin, Jim Carrey and Robert De Niro. This trend has gone on for so long that it’s become the expected norm that newsworthy politicians will be played by celebrity ringers, as opposed to in-house talent.
But Lorne Michaels’ strategy has led to some hurt feelings. Darrell Hammond technically wasn’t a part of the cast when Donald Trump entered the political arena, but he was still kicking around Studio 8H in his capacity as announcer, and was tapped to reprise the role of Trump, who he’d already impersonated in previous seasons.

Paramount’s ‘hybrid’ spin on the animated cartoon is bound to be disturbingly freakish, as it mixes real actors with animated baby-blobs
Not so long ago, the trailer for next year’s Minecraft movie seemed to go out of its way to become the single ugliest thing ever witnessed by humankind. Not only did it feature real life actors weaponising the worst facets of their personae, but the CGI – unable to decide whether it wanted to look like the source material or Pixar – fell between the two, giving us creatures that looked as if they were made in the glass boxes that Japanese farmers use to make square watermelons.
However, as awful as the Minecraft trailer looked, the gauntlet has now been thrown down. Deadline has announced that Paramount is making a movie based on the 1990s animated cartoon Rugrats. But what stands to launch the film into the all-time...

One of Nickelodeon's most beloved shows is coming back to life as a movie, but it sounds like it's going to be a recipe for straight-up nightmare fuel. While it's best not to judge something until we see it, this one is tough to swallow. A live-action/CGI hybrid "Rugrats" movie is currently in the works, according to Deadline. Full details have not been made available, but that alone is enough to raise a great many eyebrows.
According to the report, Jason Moore is on board to direct the film. Since Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount, presumably that studio will distribute the movie. Then again, there's always the possibility this could go to Netflix or directly to Paramount . Mikey Day, of "Saturday Night Live" fame, co-wrote the film alongside his "SNL" writing partner Streeter Seidell. This project has actually been kicking around for some time, with a "Rugrats" live-action...

“Rugrats” is returning to the big screen. Paramount is developing a live-action/ CG hybrid feature film that’s based on the beloved ’90s animated children’s TV show.
Tommy Pickles and his pals Chuckie Finster and Phil and Lil DeVille will be animated in the movie, which is set in the real world à la “Sonic the Hedgehog.” It’s unclear who from the original series — the foursome is orbited by bully Angelica Pickles, Tommy’s baby brother Dil Pickles, dog Spike, as well as their parents Didi and Stu Pickles, Chas Finster, Drew and Charlotte Pickles and Betty and Howard DeVille — will appear in the upcoming film.
Jason Moore, whose credits include “Pitch Perfect” and the Tina Fey-Amy Poeheler comedy “Sisters,” is directing the film. “Saturday Night Live” actor Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidell penned the script. Karen Rosenfelt is producing, along with “Rugrats” co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó.

The latest victim of IP resuscitation is the Rugrats, which is crazy because Rugrats was revived just three years ago as a CG animated series that has already been completely wiped from Paramount . No matter; Hollywood can keep birthing Rugrats over and over again as long as there's money to be made.

Man, those Rugrats sure know how to stir up trouble, don’t they? For real though, I can’t believe it’s been over twenty years since I was glued to the TV every Saturday morning’, hangin’ on Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil’s every adventure. It seems like just yesterday they were teachin’ this kid life lessons through hilarious hijinks, even if some parts did give me nightmares thanks to Angelica’s schemes!
Anyway, it’s wild to think this lovable bunch of babbling babies is still captivating’ kids today. And it ain’t just new generations discovering’ the show—no way, we original fans still get a kick out of these rugrats too. Maybe it’s their bold imagination or the deeper themes hidden under all the poop jokes, but somehow Rugrats just clicks with folks of all ages.

If you’re a millennial or a member of Generation X, then you probably grew up with a pretty good idea of the music, movies, and television shows that your parents were raised on.
Throughout the Clinton years, there were entire radio stations and TV channels dedicated to the “oldies” of the 1950s and ’60s, and the cinematic classics of that era were easy to find on cable or in video stores.
In other words, the most popular content from the baby boomer era was not niche stuff that was only being tracked down by amateur pop culture historians.
(Paramount (YouTube screenshot))
In fact, in those days, kids who were still watching Nickelodeon at 8:00 pm would find themselves suddenly caught in a time warp that would transport them to the era of I Love Lucy, Donna Reed, and Ozzie and Harriet.

Have you ever noticed how Tommy from Rugrats sounds just like one of the Powerpuff Girls? Or that Scooby-Doo and Astro from The Jetsons speak very similar dog languages?
Hollywood’s voice-acting community is full of really talented people who can churn out a bunch of different voices, but that doesn’t mean they don’t occasionally have characters that end up sounding exactly alike (it doesn’t help that this group of performers is relatively small).
To that end, here are 10 sets of cartoon characters whose voices are practically interchangeable…
10 Scooby-Doo and Astro
The Jetsons, which debuted as a prime-time show in 1962, is considered a classic today, but it didn’t gain that status until the 1980s when it re-debuted on Saturday mornings with new episodes. Since its launch in 2019, Disney has been a reliable hub for some of the most important movies in film history. There’s every Disney animated film from “Snow White” forward, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pixar and the Muppets, Star Wars and Avatar. But the pipeline of new content has slowed dramatically, and as the price continues to rise, we think it’s time to give Disney the shove.

CBS sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" was a staple for American TV audiences of the '70s, thanks in large part to clever writing and Newhart's much-loved performance as psychologist and comedic straight man Bob Hartley. The show ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978, but it had a surprisingly long pop cultural afterlife. Characters from "The Bob Newhart Show" have popped up in everything from "Murphy Brown" to "St. Elsewhere" to "Alf," though their most famous reappearance came in the jokey "Newhart" finale in 1990. In it, Newhart wakes up in bed next to his wife from the previous series and discovers that this entire sitcom was all an elaborate dream. "The Bob Newhart Show," it turned out, was his real world.

The latest content cuts at Paramount’s streamer could be a sign that a deal to acquire its parent company may be drawing close.
It’s been a rough year for Paramount’s reputation as a provider of kids content. In February it was announced that the company was laying off the entire staff of its kids streaming service Noggin ahead of that streamer’s eventual shutdown, and now reports are circulating that Paramount has removed 10 Nickelodeon original series as part of its ongoing attempts to rationalize the content on the streaming platform.
Shows removed include 2021’s “Rugrats,” 2019’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and others. In its fourth quarter 2023 10-k filing, Paramount indicated such content cuts were coming. Paramount has purged 10 Nickelodeon original series, following the removal of other Nick titles from the platform over the past several months.
The list includes the Blue’s Clues revival Blue’s Clues & You! (2019), Are You Afraid of the Dark? This is said to be part of content removal addressed in the most recent Q4 earnings call on February 28. At the start of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's 31st-century sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) sounded a little bit more like a drunken vagrant. He slurred his speech more and seemed less able to concentrate. As the show progressed, Bender became more self-assured, like the guy at the bar who — after his fourth shot of Jim Beam — is 100% confident he could thrash the bouncer. Bender became egotistical in addition to being a drunken criminal. On DVD commentary tracks, the makers of "Futurama" have said that Bender, in being a robot, allowed them more explicit depictions of violence and vice; a human character cannot drink a gallon of rotgut whiskey and smoke four cigars simultaneously, but a robot can. The Fox censors are weird.
Prior to "Futurama," Dimaggio only had a few credits to his name. His first gig was playing ancillary voices in...

There are loads of tantalizing Hollywood casting what-ifs. Tom Selleck would've played Indiana Jones had he not been previously committed to CBS' "Magnum P.I." Pierce Brosnan was set to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond after "A View to a Kill," but NBC, realizing the star of their just-canceled "Remington Steele," was a hot commodity, resurrected the show for a fifth season (after which it was canceled again). And there's always poor Dougray Scott, who had to give up the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer's "X-Men" when "Mission: Impossible II" went over schedule.
These were franchise- and career-altering decisions. What would Harrison Ford have done after the conclusion of the "Star Wars" original trilogy in 1983? Would Brosnan have rejuvenated the flagging Bond series, thus averting the six-year retooling period between "License to Kill" and "GoldenEye?" Could Scott have connected with audiences as emphatically as Hugh Jackman did in the role of Logan?...

I love cartoons. Specifically cartoon series from the 80’s and 90’s. Whenever someone asks me what my favorite childhood cartoon is, I always say there are two. The first is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the second is Darkwing Duck. I was the biggest fan of the masked mallard, and who wouldn’t be? He was brave, smart, egotistical, and accident-prone but would persevere against evil. He had a killer costume and cool equipment to fight bad guys. He had an awesome rogue’s gallery that was a bit of a joke but also surprisingly formidable. The cartoon was also not afraid to show its love for classic superhero comics at a time when the general public didn’t understand it. It even broke through the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War. But does this cartoon from the early 90’s still hold up? Is it a silly...

One of the most endearing cartoons for kids who grew up in the 90s is Nickelodeon’s Doug. Doug is like an animated version of The Wonder Years, where our timid but well-intentioned teenage protagonist, Doug Funnie, journeys through his high school development years with his unique family, his best buddy, Skeeter Valentine and his dog, Porkchop. Doug also has his high school crush, Patti Mayonnaise, whom he constantly tries to impress. And of course, no high school experience would be complete without a bully. Doug has the misfortune of getting consistently targeted by Roger Klotz.

Before SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly OddParents, there was Rugrats.
Alongside fellow “Nicktoons” Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats premiered Aug. 11, 1991 on Nickelodeon and helped establish an animated storytelling dynasty on the cable network. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, the show was by far the most successful of Nickelodeon’s early offerings and helped set the stage for the Patrick Stars and Timmy Turners to come.
The cartoon followed the daily lives of toddlers Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, and twins Phil and Lil DeVille as they attempted to make sense of the adult world while also indulging in their imaginations for some larger-than-life adventures. Though the children’s parents also featured as secondary characters, Tommy and friends could only communicate with one another in their own unique baby language.

Devo lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh, who created the music for Paul Reubens’ series Pee-wee’s Playhouse and the 2016 movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, has paid tribute to the late actor and reflected upon how collaborating with Reubens “changed the trajectory” of his career in an interview with Yahoo Music.
“He always had a good personality and a good heart,” Mothersbaugh said about his longtime friend. “It’s just shocking and sad that he’s gone.” The Devo co-founder had no idea that Reubens had been privately battling cancer, adding, “We’d even been talking about working on an animated version of Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”
Mothersbaugh and Reubens met at the comedy improv theater the Groundlings when Mothersbaugh was dating founding member Laraine Newman (who was also part of the original Saturday Night Live cast). It was there that Mothersbaugh witnessed Reubens creating his Pee-wee Herman character. They kept in touch and first collaborated...
