Al Pacino starred in Sea of Love in 1989 after a four-year hiatus and gave a box office hit with his neo-noir crime thriller. Pacino’s last film before Sea of Love, Revolution, was a critical and commercial disaster. But it was Diane Keaton who put him back on the top of Hollywood by offering him Harold Becker’s movie. Before barging into his lawyer’s office and saving his career, she called him an idiot to his face in front of his lawyer.
Diane Keaton and Al Pacino shared a great friendship from working together in The Godfather films
Al Pacino played an NYPD detective in the film trying to catch a serial killer who targets and kills their victims through the singles column in a newspaper. The film, made on a budget of $19 million, grossed over $110 million at the box office.

Brian De Palma’s “play nice” films—in which he shows that he can groove to the strictures of pop cinema while reinvigorating formulaic stories with his formal gifts—often have an acrid aftertaste. While watching The Untouchables or Mission: Impossible, the De Palma acolyte may sense the artist’s resentment at having to impersonally flex his mastery. Carlito’s Way, though, is an exception.
Working from a vivid screenplay by David Koepp, adapted from two novels by Judge Edwin Torres, De Palma embraces the romantic possibilities of mainstream cinema, using his skill to deepen the audience’s engagement with melodrama rather than to interrogate it. The 1993 film is an increasingly endangered bird—an intelligent and beautiful entertainment for adults—that was taken for granted by many at the time.

Al Pacino says he doesn’t remember much of the 1970s. So, The Godfather, Serpico, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, …And Justice For All are some of the greatest movies ever, let alone of the 1970s: all a blur. But unfortunately, he remembers Gigli and 88 Minutes, Revolution, Righteous Kill, and too many more all too well. He is a guy that always goes over the top, and sometimes it results in brilliance and other times, it causes Mr. Pacino to become a parody of himself. But is his legacy strong enough, and is Al in the middle of another comeback?
It’s a diverse career of ups and downs and whatever he was thinking with Jack and Jill. And so let’s find out: Wtf Happened to… Al Pacino?

Ellen Barkin alleges that Sea of Love director Harold Becker forcefully tore off her merkin during production.
Barkin, who currently appears in Rian Johnson’s new series, Poker Face, starred in the 1989 neo-noir thriller alongside Al Pacino and John Goodman.
In a recent interview with HuffPost, Barkin said she felt powerless to react to abusive behaviour from men in Hollywood as a young actor.
“You do nothing,” B]arkin, who was in her early thirties while filming Sea of Love. “What was I going to do when Harold Becker on Sea of Love walks over and literally rips my merkin off, taking some pubic hair with him and saying: ‘What do you need this for? Nobody’s looking at you.’”
A merkin is a pubic wig used by actors to protect their modesty on set.
A representative for Becker did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.

Ellen Barkin got brutally honest in a recent interview with HuffPo about battling misogyny, sexism and harassment in Hollywood. The actor revealed that during the making of her 1989 neo-noir thriller “Sea of Love,” director Harold Becker allegedly ripped off her merkin during the filming of a nude scene. A merkin is a loin cloth garment that serves as a pubic wig for actors to wear during nude scenes.
“What was I going to do when [director] Harold Becker on ‘Sea of Love’ walks over and literally rips my merkin off, taking some pubic hair with him and saying: ‘What do you need this for? Ellen Barkin is opening up about a difficult experience with director Harold Becker.
The “Poker Face” star recalled a particular “very difficult” scene for neo-noir film “Sea of Love,” helmed by Becker, which involved her being completely nude except for a merkin, which is a loin cloth garment made to look like a pubic region. Merkin alleges Becker forcefully removed her merkin during production.
“What was I going to do when [director] Harold Becker on ‘Sea of Love’ walks over and literally rips my merkin off, taking some pubic hair with him and saying: ‘What do you need this for? Nobody’s looking at you’?” Barkin told Huffington Post.
Barkin noted her “Sea of Love” scene partner was “terrified” following the encounter. Her love scene was filmed with Al Pacino. “This is what [the industry’s] like,” Barkin added. “And I had an easy time with it, believe me.”

Oh, you weren’t tired of Harry Styles news? Well good thing because do we have a spitfire trailer headed your way! The trailer for another upcoming movie of Harry Styles’, My Policeman, has arrived and it hints at what may be Styles’ most promising performance so far.
The trailer shows the relationship between police officer Tom (Harry Styles) and teacher Marion. It seems ideal until museum curator Patrick enters the picture, triggering a gay relationship between him and Tom.
Also featured are older versions of the characters, played by Linus Roache, Gina McKee and Rupert Everett, respectively. Cat Power’s cover of “Sea of Love” is wonderfully utilized throughout the trailer.
My Policeman has been in development since 2020, with Lily James originally set to co-star with Harry Styles. Corrin took her place early last year.

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.
Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.
While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

“F9” has gone from zero to $100 million in record post-pandemic time, hitting the domestic milestone on its second Friday in theaters, as the blockbuster has combined with newcomers “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “The Forever Purge,” to give Universal the top three spots on this July 4th box office weekend.
The studio boasts that this is the first time a studio has done a podium sweep on the weekend charts since Sony in February 2005 — and the first time Universal has achieved it since the release of the Al Pacino thriller “Sea of Love” in September 1989. Such a feat is so uncommon because studios generally space out the releases of their films to avoid having them compete with each other for audience attention.
But with “Black Widow” coming out next weekend, Universal has decided to release a DreamWorks Animation family film and a Blumhouse horror film to serve as blockbuster counterprogramming.

It was big news earlier this year when Al Pacino appeared in his first-ever series regular TV role in the Amazon thriller “Hunters.” But the reviews were somewhat mixed, and the Emmys ultimately passed on it despite its star power. That might not be the last word on the series, though. Pacino is adored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that votes on the Golden Globes. Will he get his revenge for this revenge thriller?

“I Am God”
By Raymond Benson
It’s a line uttered by Dr. Jed Hill (chillingly played by a young Alec Baldwin), during a deposition in which he defends his surgical skill and knowledge as the things people in chapels really pray to when a loved one is under the knife in the operating room. “I am God,” he says with the kind of arrogance that only an actor like Baldwin can deliver.
Malice, the 1993 thriller directed by Harold Becker (whose previous film was the terrific Sea of Love), was adapted from a story by Aaron Sorkin and Jonas McCord, with a screenplay by Sorkin and Scott Frank. That’s powerhouse writing authorship, and the twisty-turny tale that unfolds on the screen is solid evidence the fact. Despite the rather improbable premise behind the con job that is at the heart of Malice, the picture indeed holds your interest and keeps you guessing.

What can you say about a hybrid gangster picture that generates a good feeling about people? We really like this show — Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman and Bill Murray’s characterizations are fresh and surprising — and refreshingly non-pc, with David Caruso, Kathy Baker and Mike Starr providing solid backup. Everything’s in fine form under director John McNaughton, as filmed by Robby Müller. And there’s a fascinating story about how parts of the story were re-written and re-shot, after a preview screening.

It’s hard for me to even admit that Dario Argento’s Opera had been a major blind spot of mine for far too long, but I’m thankful for the recent Blu-ray release of the film, courtesy of both Scorpion Releasing and Doppelganger Releasing, as it made this cinematic discovery feel like a true work of art befitting of the Horror Maestro’s stunning and wholly unique vision, confidently displaying this slice of giallo madness from 1987. And as you can probably tell, after just one viewing, I’m 110 percent a fan of Opera now and still cannot believe it took me this long to see this wildly weird masterpiece.
For anyone who hasn’t seen Opera, I’ll do my best not to spoil the abundance of intriguing revelations that happen throughout the movie. The simplified version of the film’s core story follows an ingénue soprano named Betty...

Aaron Sorkin is currently making the press rounds in promotion of his directorial debut “Molly’s Game,” and he recently shared an eye-opening story with USA Today about one of his earliest gigs as the screenwriter of “Malice.” Sorkin had just come off the success of “A Few Good Men” when he re-teamed with Columbia Pictures to write the Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman-starring thriller, which was being directed by Harold Becker (“The Boost,” “Sea of Love”).
According to Sorkin, Becker specifically requested him to write a “steamy” sex scene for Nicole Kidman. “Early on in my career, I wrote a movie that I’m not very proud of at all, it just turned into a mess,” Sorkin said, “Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman were in it. The director, very close to the start of photography, decided that we were missing a sex scene between Alec and Nicole.”

There’s an in between zone that parents often look for if they’re easing their kids into horror. If they’re fans of the genre themselves, the urge to take the tykes from Scooby-Doo to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is very tempting. I was one of the fortunate ones who was allowed to cut out the middleman and dive right into the heady stuff. So it was then that I missed out on a great bridge between the two extremes, The Midnight Hour (1985), ABC’s successful bid to get the Thriller-crazy crowd on their side.
Originally airing November 1st as part of The ABC Friday Night Movie (really? There was no Thursday slot open to make it for Halloween?), The Midnight Hour fought off CBS’ Dallas for its first half and NBC’s Miami Vice for the back, but those shows weren’t the ideal demographic anyway – this...

2017-08-30T11:47:12-07:00What's New on Netflix in September?
There's not much happening at the box office this weekend, but there's plenty happening, movie-wise, at home thanks to Netflix. The people at The Verge have given us this helpful list of all the new content coming to Netflix in September, along with some of the new gems coming to Amazon and HBO, too.
Via The Verge.
The seventh season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is now over, sending the world careening into a hopeless content abyss. At this point, even the summer movie season isn’t around to lend any help. Desperate moments like this make it crystal clear why having multiple streaming services to choose from is a good thing.
Netflix is bolstering its movie selection in the coming month, adding films like Dead Poets Society, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, and all four Jaws movies.

Over the years, American novelist and screenwriter Richard Price has seen many of his works make smooth transitions from the page to the screen. His book The Wanderers was adapted by Philip Kaufman into a now-iconic coming-of-age film, and Spike Lee’s take on Clockers earned strong reviews. Additionally, Price’s work as a screenwriter has been highly successful – among his accolades are an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (for The Color of Money) and a Writers Guild of America Award (for HBO’s The Wire, on which he served as a writer). Now, Sony is betting on Price’s ability to deliver another strong drama by entering talks to adapt his upcoming work The Whites.
If a deal is made, super-producer Scott Rudin (Captain Phillips) will produce a film adaptation of the crime drama, the first written by Price under the pen name Harry Brandt. Set in New York City,...

Director: Daniel Espinosa
Writers: Richard Price
Producer: Summit Entertainment, Worldview Entertainment, Etalon Film, Scott Free Productions, Stillking Films
U.S. Distributor: Summit Ent/Lionsgate
Cast: Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, Vincent Cassel, Jason Clarke, Paddy Considine
Based on the first novel from a popular trilogy, this sounds like a melding of John Le Carre and Stieg Larsson (of course, mainplayers Rapace and Oldman might be responsible for that ambiance as well). Helmed by Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, who received wide acclaim with his 2010 film, Easy Money, we’re hoping this gets more traction than his 2012 English language debut, Safe House. A killer (and very masculine) cast should make this one to watch for, though screenwriter Richard Price can be a bit iffy. He’s been working television since his last feature screenplay, which was 2006’s Freedomland…but we’re hoping this is the same caliber...

The National will contribute a new song to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The five-piece's new song 'Lean' will feature on the eagerly-awaited sequel alongside the Coldplay track 'Atlas'.
The National frontman Matt Berninger told NME that the song was originally titled 'Dying Is Easy', but the band were asked to rename it when the studio deemed it "too dark".
Berninger said: "The song almost didn't make it because it was too dark for The Hunger Games soundtrack, which I thought was sort of funny because it's about killing kids, I don't know how a song can be darker than that? So we had to change the name of the song; I actually like the name 'Lean'.
"The song was originally called 'Dying Is Easy' and I think that they thought it was a little too dark. But, you know, I get it. It was a really fun project.
