Even if you don’t immediately recognize the name Frances Sternhagen, there’s still a good chance that you’ve seen her acting in something at some point over the decades. Sternhagen has stage and screen credits going back decades, and over that time she racked up Emmy nominations and Tony wins. Sadly, it’s being reported today that she passed away of natural causes this past Monday, at the age of 93.

Sternhagen earned her first screen credit on the TV show Producers’ Showcase in 1955, and went on to work on 75 other projects, including the Burt Reynolds comedy Starting Over, the Sean Connery sci-fi classic Outland, Independence Day – the 1983 drama, not the alien invasion movie; Dudley Moore’s Romantic Comedy, the John Lithgow / Morgan Freeman drama Resting Place, the Michael J. A three-time Primetime Emmy nominee for her work on “Cheers” and later “Sex and the City,” acting legend Francis Sternhagen has passed away this week at the age of 93.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear mother, actress Frances Sternhagen, died peacefully of natural causes in New Rochelle, NY, on November 27th, 2023 at the age of 93,” the family shared in a statement to People this afternoon.

“She is survived by her 6 children, 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her remarkable career and life is planned for mid January, near her 94th birthday,” the statement continued. “We continue to be inspired by her love and life.”

Here in the horror world, Francis Sternhagen is best remembered for a handful of roles in the Stephen King Cinematic Universe, including Misery (1990) and The Mist (2007).

Sternhagen also starred in the 1991 mini-series “Golden Years,” created by Stephen King.

A pair of Oscar nominations for “Collective,” a blistering exposé of corruption in his native Romania, was certainly a triumph for Alexander Nanau, one of Europe’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers. But it was a success story shared by co-producer HBO Europe, which has spent the past decade beefing up its documentary arm en route to becoming one of the continent’s leading producers of documentary films.

Now that doc division is readying for the global spotlight, as WarnerMedia begins the international rollout of its HBO Max streaming service, which will launch across Latin America in June and in much of Europe later this year. “This is really an exciting thing, telling local stories for a global audience,” says Hanka Kastelicova, HBO Europe’s VP of documentaries, who spoke to Variety during Hot Docs.

Jan Komasa’s “Corpus Christi,” which screened this week at the Toronto Film Festival, has been selected by Poland to be its official entry in the Best International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards.

The film, which world premiered as part of Venice Days earlier this month, follows 20-year-old Daniel, who experiences a spiritual transformation while living in a youth detention center. He wants to become a priest, but this is impossible because of his criminal record.

When he is sent to work at a carpenter’s workshop in a small town, on arrival he dresses up as a priest and accidentally takes over the parish. The arrival of the young, charismatic “preacher” is an opportunity for the community to begin the healing process after a tragedy that happened there.

Outside of Larry Cohen and Brian De Palma, there’s a dearth of high-profile genre auteurs in the canon of 1970s American horror cinema. One of their colleagues is Alfred Sole, whose short-lived filmography ended after three features. A New Jersey architect, Sole crafted a hysterically primed psychological thriller with his fascinating debut, Alice, Sweet Alice (1976), best remembered as the debut of Brooke Shields, whose name and visage would eventually be plastered over the home entertainment offerings of the film following her rise to stardom two years later.

Just in time for some essential Oscar nomination prep, documentary film lovers can catch up on all 15 shortlisted contenders for Best Documentary, thanks to the Academy’s recently launched new program “Oscars Spotlight: Documentary Feature Shortlist.” The program features all of the shortlisted titles, including “Charm City,” “Communion,” “Crime Punishment,” “Dark Money,” “The Distant Barking of Dogs,” “Free Solo,” “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” “Minding the Gap,” “Of Fathers and Sons,” “On Her Shoulders,” “Rbg,” “Shirkers,” “The Silence of Others,” “Three Identical Strangers,” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

For first time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn’t dole out its Oscars short lists one category at a time this year. Instead, it released them in one fell swoop on Dec. 17, singling out 101 films that will move to a second round of voting in nine categories.

When the dust had cleared, here’s what we had learned.

1. Europe lost its stranglehold on the foreign-language category. With four films from Asia, three from Europe, one from North America and one from South America, this is the first year since the Oscars foreign short list began in 2006 that a continent other than Europe has placed the most films on the list.

And after being called out for consistently failing to recognize films from East Asia (including by TheWrap), the Academy put Japan’s “Shoplifters” on the list and, crucially, gave South Korea its first-ever spot on the short list for “Burning.

Yesterday afternoon, the Academy did something brand new. The announced nine shortlists for the upcoming 91st Academy Awards. Yes, the Oscars are hinting at some of their below the line finalists. In the categories of Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Animated Short Film, Best Live Action Short Film, and Best Visual Effects, we now have a narrowed field. A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

In a year that has seen multiple documentaries find mainstream success, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 166 docs that have been submitted for Oscar consideration this year.

Among the films on the list are Michael Moore’s anti-Trump polemic “Fahrenheit 11/9,” as well as CNN Films’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography “Rbg” and Focus’ Mister Rogers retrospective “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

Other films considered frontrunners include “Three Identical Strangers,” the wild story of triplets who were separated at birth by a bizarre experiment, “Free Solo,” which documents the first ever attempt to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan without any climbing gear, and “Dark Money,” an investigative report into the influence of billionaires on American democracy through the lens of a Montana congressional race.

Barcelona — Paris-based Cat & Docs has taken all international rights to Bettina Perut and Iván Osnovikoff’s “Los Reyes,” a documentary feature which screens in competition at the 31st International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (Idfa).

The feature is produced by Chile’s foremost young documentary director Maite Alberdi in association with Perut and Osnovikoff’s own company, founded in 2003. It is co-produced by Hamburg-based Dirk Manthey Film.

“Los Reyes” follows two stray dogs, Chola and Fútbol, and they wander around the oldest skatepark (Los Reyes) in the Chilean capital of Santiago. Members of the Academy’s documentary branch received a generous gift from AMPAS on Friday: 77 new films that had qualified in this year’s Best Documentary Feature category.

And it turned what had been a modest year for docs — with a total of 83 films included in June, July, August and September groups — into one in which the number of eligible films that voters would need to watch nearly doubled.

The Academy also promised voters in the branch to expect a final batch of films in early November — which, if it hits double digits, will set a new record in the category.

Alfred Sole is a production designer who has carved out a nice career for himself in Hollywood, most notably on the television shows Veronica Mars (2004-7), Castle (2009-16), and the reboot of MacGyver (2017-18). Long before he chose that line of work however, he dabbled in the world of film directing. His first film, the 1972 hardcore sex “comedy” Deep Sleep, must be seen to be believed because despite a few flourishes of cinematic style and several humorous sequences involving dialogue, it’s just a hardcore sex romp featuring folks no one in their right mind would want to see naked let alone copulating. There is absolutely nothing in this film to suggest that he would next direct one of the greatest and most thematically disturbing thrillers of our time, 1976’s Communion, not to be confused with the Christopher Walken/alien-probe-up-the-old-dirt-road 1989 outing based on Whitley Strieber’s 1987 “non-fiction” book of the same name.

“Star Wars” producer Gary Kurtz and British crime film director Greg Hall are teaming on an untitled feature film about iconic British poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe.

Kurtz and Hall announced the project on Wednesday, the 425th anniversary of the death of Marlowe at the age of 29. Marlowe is best remembered as William Shakespeare’s friend and rival, but the film will explore the aftermath of his role as a spy for the British crown while a student at Cambridge University.

Marlowe wrote “The Jew of Malta,” “Edward the Second” and “Doctor Faustus.” His death has long been assumed to have been as a result of a fight between friends over a bar bill. But, according to the filmmakers, he was assassinated as a matter of state policy because of his involvement in secret affairs.

Louis Bloom will succeed Darcus Beese as president of Island Records U.K., parent company Universal Music Group announced Wednesday. Bloom, who has worked at Island for 16 years, most recently as head of A&R, takes over the role with immediate effect.

It was announced last week that Beese would move from the U.K. to New York to take over as president of Island Records in the U.S. from David Massey, who is moving to Sony Music. Beese, who had headed the U.K. operation for five years, officially takes on his new role July 1.

Bloom said he wants Island to be “the No. 1 label and home culture and creativity.”

While at Island, Bloom has signed major, multi-platinum-selling artists, including Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard and Hozier, as well as The Feeling, Goyte, and John Newman. Most recently he has signed Catfish and the Bottlemen (via Communion) and Jp Cooper.

Film-Makers’ Co-Op Shows ‘The Wild One’

The Gulf Coast Film-Makers’ Co-Op, an off campus student organization, will inaugurate its Film Factory at 8 p.m., Friday.

Founded to encourage student film-making, Film-Makers’ Co-Op is a result of interest among university students for a place to show and make films. Spokesmen cite the fact that at present there isn’t any University course for the beginning student who wants to make creative films, and of the two courses devoted to film on campus, both are oriented for radio and TV majors.

The Group has received support from the New American Cinema groups on both east and west coasts. Independent film-makers like Bruce Baillie and Robert Nelson from California have provided films for the first program. Varo Venturi's Day 6 is another genre outing that has made its rounds under different titles: Alien Exorcism (U.S.), Alien Encounter (U.K.), 5 Giorni Sulla Terra (Italy), Eirian-Baasasu-Ekusoshituto (Japan), and 6 Days on Earth. Now out on DVD from One 7 Movies, Day 6 introduces a story that is intriguing but tests the audiences' patience by inundating them with so much information that it becomes a bit much to follow. Although spoken (and apparently also dubbed) in English, there are no subtitles, and their absence is heavily felt. In a nutshell, the film is a fair attempt of mixing aliens with evil spirits. Dr. Davide Piso (Massimo Poggio) is a scientist who has dedicated his life's work to the study of alien abductions. You would think that he would have taken notes from Whitley Strieber's 1987 book on the subject, Communion, as he speaks with and studies people who claim to have been abducted.

Wednesday January 27, 2016 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the date the United Nations has chosen to commemorate victims of the Holocaust during World War II. Six million Jews were murdered by Germany's Nazi regime, along with 5 million non-Jews who were also murdered. The anniversary, marked each year since 2005, falls on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland by the Russian army in 1945. One million people died there.

Film director, Philippe Mora and music legend Eric Clapton have joined forces to co-produce a very personal film – "Three Days in Auschwitz" – which details life and death in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The official synopsis describes the film as follows:

As a Jew, born the year after the end of World War II, Philippe Mora was a second-generation holocaust survivor who lost eight members of his family at Auschwitz. Unaware for many years about the role his father played in the French Resistance and how his mother had evaded certain death at Auschwitz by one day, Philippe Mora takes us on a personal journey that many holocaust survivors have had to walk to try to come to terms with the scale of inhumanity that the Nazis showed towards the Jews. From Melbourne to Paris and London, Mora traces the people who lived through the horrors of concentration camps and discovers how his own life was very nearly extinct before he was even born.

"Three Days in Auschwitz" is the story of how Mora was eventually driven to visit Auschwitz itself after decades of avoiding this death camp. His message is that while it remains a chapter in our history that must never be forgotten – it should also be remembered that monsters did not carry out Hitler’s instructions for the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, they were ordinary human beings. ‘To ignore this fact’, states Mora, ‘is to allow the next Hitler to arise and commit genocide.’ As well as being a co-producer, Mora’s heartfelt film boasts a score which has been specially composed and performed by Eric Clapton.

The haunting sound of Clapton’s guitar accompanying the train trucks ferrying thousands of Jews into their death on the rail tracks of Auschwitz is unforgettable, according to Mora, who has a long-standing friendship with Clapton that goes back to their days as flatmates around the Kings Road in Chelsea when Mora was a young artist and Clapton about to hit the big time in music. As well as Clapton’s soundtrack, Mora who has directed many films including Communion, Howling II and III, Mad Dog Morgan, has showcased some of his paintings that were inspired by the memories of holocaust survivors and his feelings about the Nazis. ‘Are you a Jew?’ Hitler asks Mickey Mouse in one of Mora’s paintings.

"Three Days in Auschwitz" will be released on DVD and digital by Screenbound Pictures on 9 May 2016, along with special public screenings.

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. Some weird stuff happens when you’re asleep. Just about everyone can attest to that, whether they just half-remember an unusual dream or they’re susceptible to sleepwalking. But The Nightmare points out that for some people, there’s something bad waiting for them in the dark when they go to sleep. A horrible force that makes them fear the very act of lying down to rest.

The unusual nature of sleep paralysis is the subject of this documentary, and as for the movie itself, it’s an unusual way to address the topic. The Nightmare, in essence, is a horror documentary, set-up like a horror movie, shot like a horror movie and delivered like a horror movie. It’s perhaps the most based on a true story “based on a true story” horror ever made.

If The Nightmare breaks the documentary mode, it should be unsurprising, as it comes from Rodney Ascher.

Ah, 1989. The year the Berlin Wall came down and Yugoslavia won the Eurovision Song Contest. It was also a big year for film, with Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade topping the box office and Batman dominating the summer with its inescapable marketing blitz.

Outside the top 10 highest-grossing list, which included Back To The Future II, Dead Poets Society and Honey I Shrunk The Kids, 1989 also included a plethora of less commonly-appreciated films. Some were big in their native countries but only received a limited release in the Us and UK. Others were poorly received but have since been reassessed as cult items.

Syfy (Dominion, Helix, formerly Battlestar Galacticia) is looking to invest even more in geeky programming it would seem – news today broke that they’re working on a new series based on the best-selling novel Alien Hunter by Whitley Strieber.

Strieber is a prolific author, whose work has previously been adapted thrice for the big screen – Wolfen, The Hunger and Communion (all in the 1980s) were the resultant films.

The new show will be titled Hunters, and will run for thirteen episodes. Gale Anne Hurd, an executive producer for The Walking Dead, is on board to produce the show, which should premiere in 2016.

The novel centred around a cop disappearing in Philadelphia and the existence of a covert government team hunting for extra-terrestrial terrorists. It will be adapted for screen by Heroes’ Natalie Chaidez.

Philippe Mora, the Australian-u.S. Producer of incredibly Jewish stories which are based on his own family is now showing his film Absolutely Modern on Amazon Instant Video and we think you should tune in. If Sandy Lieberson of Film London says that " Philippe Mora never ceases to surprise, challenge and amuse. He is a one man film industry and satire is his weapon. ” then it’s worth the look.

Philippe is best known in the film world for Brother Can You Spare a Dime (which was produced by Sanford Lieberson and David Puttnam and edited by Jeremy Thomas!) It was a great film, a nostalgic look back at the Great Depression with contemporary archival footage and film clips picturing James Cagney as an American Everyman that Dimension might still have for U.S. Other films he is known for —Mad Dog Morgan (1976),Howling III (1987) and Communion(1989) are just a few on a long, long list of films. I hope all my film friends don’t ask me to do this, because I am not an advertising agency, but in the case of Philippe (we go back a long way!) I am happy to do this and besides it is a great opportunity to see how modern media can sell using modern technology. Dyi as its best!

And on another note, a documentary film titled Man Made Mora about him is being directed and produced by Alan Goldman and edited by Alex Soler for Blue Plate Productions.

The film is a feature documentary about Artist and Filmmaker Philippe Mora as he takes us on a unique journey into film, art and history, which reveals a tragic family past, but his family's survival and work represents a celebration of life, creativity and art.

Mr. Mora's parents were survivors of the Holocaust and moved to Melbourne, Australia from Paris when he was three years old. In 2010, he was attending a retrospective of his work at the New Horizons Film Festival in Wroclaw. As you probably aware Wroclaw was formerly part of Germany and was known as Breslau prior to the end of World War Two. Before he left for the festival his mother Mirka told him that she remembered his father telling her that his grandfather Max had gotten married there. The archivist said that she would help but needed a couple of days to see what she could find.

Upon his return Philippe was amazed to learn that the archivist had found a lot more than just the marriage certificate. She had unearthed a plethora of Third Reich documents revealing the fate of his great uncle Fritz Morawski, a wealthy businessman and landowner, who had all of his assets and possessions stolen by the Nazis and then, along with his family, he perished in Auschwitz. Mora recently passed the papers over to a lawyer who specializes in these types of claims who stated “this kind of extensive documentation—250 plus items—is extremely unusual because the Nazis destroyed such records.” By searching through the documents Mora has determined that eight of his relatives were murdered at Auschwitz.

Philippe is fascinated by the “banality of evil”, a theme flowing through all of his art and films. Although Mora has made four films about the scourge of Nazism, it is too simplistic to categorize him as a filmmaker obsessed with everything to do with the Third Reich. Mora is constantly turning over the rocks of history searching for answers to his questions. Philippe has examined subjects such as Marilyn Monroe’s mysterious death believing that “many important historical artifacts are just hiding in plain sight.” Why the continual search for answers? Is it because he recently discovered that the Nazis murdered eight of his relatives in Auschwitz, or because his father was an important member of the French resistance? Whatever the reasons, he has a desire to continue to question the past through his art, in an attempt to better understand how history has shaped our current day life. In Man Made Mora we will see Philippe tackle that past directly.

We will document Philippe’s journey back to Poland and Germany to find out what happened to his family and their possessions. The journey will serve as a physical and metaphorical means of structuring the film and will result in an intimate portrayal of the man. The audience will get an account of what happened to his family and witness Philippe sharing his own thoughts about their tragic past.

I didn’t know Christopher Walken had danced in so many movies but it’s a good thing he has otherwise we wouldn’t have this great supercut to show you. He had the moves in Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice video [watch it here] but put them all together with his movies and it’s something special.

"The Walking Dead" executive producer Gale Anne Hurd is developing the telemovie "Hunters" for the Syfy channel.

Based on "Communion" author Whitley Strieber's best-selling fictional novel "Alien Hunter," the story follows Pennsylvania detective Flynn Carroll who becomes the prime suspect after his wife mysteriously goes missing.

Determined to prove his innocence and find her, he uncovers evidence that dangerous alien cells are living among us and the U.S. government has a secret organization in place to thwart their efforts.

Natalie Chaidez ("Heroes," "V") will pen the script and executive produce alongside Hurd through her Valhalla Entertainment banner.
