Not only that, but many of these canceled titles are then removed from their original platform and made virtually inaccessible, like in the case of the "Willow" TV show.

While it is still available to watch on Disney , the short-lived "American Born Chinese" is another series that was unceremoniously canceled by the streamer before getting a chance to find its audience. The series boast an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more impressive cast that includes "New Police Story" star Daniel Wu, as well as "Everything Everywhere All At Once" actor Stephanie Hsu and her Oscar-winning co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

The Star Wars franchise is a mess. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's time in charge of the studio has been chaotic, disorganised, and directionless. Meanwhile, a small section of the fanbase has become increasingly vocal and grotesquely toxic. 

Over the years, a lot of hate has been directed at Kennedy because she's a woman. If that sort of misogynistic Bs is what you're hoping to find here, move along now. The fact is, the executive has delivered a lot of hits for the Disney-owned studio, breaking box office records and helping put Disney on the map with The Mandalorian.

However, those achievements are quickly being overshadowed and this week's reports about a new Star Wars trilogy are the final straw. It's time for Kennedy to go before the damage done to this franchise becomes irreparable.

What the heck is going on at Lucasfilm? Recently, Steven Knight left as the writer for the Rey trilogy, aka Episodes 10, 11, and 12. Now, Deadline has announced that Simon Kinberg will be taking over as writer and producer along with Kathleen Kennedy.

How many writers have the Rey films had so far?

Knight was brought in to replace the original writers, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Later, Lindelof publicly stated that he was asked to leave Star Wars. And now we have Kinberg.

The recent cancellation of the Disney original series The Acolyte has the media in a frenzy. The Star Wars spin-off series by Leslye Headland was reportedly not renewed for a second season following the mixed reception of the first season when it first aired this past June.

While critics praised the series, the audience had the opposite reaction. It became the lowest-rated piece of Star Wars television in history, even surpassing the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special in terms of audience reception.

Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) is a little erratic these days. Well, erratic for her. She kissed Drew (Cameron Mathison) and tried to avoid the man by quitting the charity. Instead, she returned to nursing. Does she truly still enjoy nursing? Or was this all about avoidance? Every conversation she has with Drew brings up memories of the kiss and ignites her crush a little more. Also, and most importantly, she’s hiding this all from her husband.

Finally, Michael (Chad Duell) senses something going on with his significant other. He actually starts to worry about Willow. Worrying is good and fine, but what will he do about it? Because Michael is somebody who always tries to fix things for his wife, whether she wants him to or not.

Star Wars as a property has faced a slew of setbacks in recent years. From the abysmally crafted sequel trilogy, that destroyed everything that the franchise stood for, to various sad attempts at onboarding a new demographic, Star Wars alienated its core audience so badly, that they don’t seem to care about the franchise any more than those who the franchise failed to onboard as new fans.

A lot of the decisions that led to this state of the fandom are a result of actions approved by the current President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy. Having personally served as a protege of Geroge Lucas before the acquisition of the IP from Disney, it is even more tragic that the current state of the franchise’s fandom can’t see any sort of meaningful change from the creator, or even Disney at large.

Kennedy's time as Lucasfilm president led to the development of several Star Wars films, including The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, Solo, and even the return of Harrison Ford to reprise his role in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is the latest addition to the franchise, but it stirred up controversy even before its debut, and the situation worsened after it premiered.

Despite a decent launch with numbers slightly below ‘Ahsoka,’ the show’s premise was quickly undermined after the release of Episode 2, and it never managed to recover.

Disney and Lucasfilm never provided an official explanation for the show’s cancellation.

The show premiered with decent numbers slightly lower than ‘Ahsoka’s’ the entire premise however was blown soon after the release of Episode 2, and the show never recovered.

Several social media movements have been started by the fans in attempts to resurrect the show. The hashtag #SaveTheAcolyte is trending on X, the petition has been started on Change.org in an attempt to persuade Disney into renewing the show and it currently stands on more than 49,000 signatures.

Another hotly anticipated Disney sci-fi series has been cancelled according to one of the creatives behind the project. 

Disney purged dozens of already-released movies and shows from its service in May 2023, including decently budgeted series like Willow and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Hulu followed suit that Summer with its own removals. In the following months, planned shows like The Spiderwick Chronicles were abandoned from the service.

These moves were true signs that the 'Peak TV' era of Hollywood had reached its end, with media conglomerates like Disney no longer splurging on countless projects to boost subscriber counts for their streaming services, instead becoming much more selective with which ones it decides to greenlight and keep on its service.
