It’s not just the water that’s murky out on Caddo Lake. Death and disappearance abound in the swamp cypress labyrinth dividing East Texas and Louisiana, but without excitement or dread. Rather, this thriller’s incidents occur only to build up to a clarifying “ah-ha” moment, which occurs between several ho-hum moments.

Walter Hill‘s “Southern Comfort” didn’t find an audience upon its release in 1981, but when it kicked off the first weekend of the 12th annual Beyond Fest at the American Cinematheque, it played to a sold-out crowd that responded to the film with the rapture it always deserved. Hill couldn’t have been more pleased or surprised. “When they told me they wanted to do this, I thought, ‘Christ, nobody will come,'” Hill told the audience at a post-screening Q&a. “I can’t believe that all of you came out tonight.”

The long-awaited unveiling of Gary Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot, the west coast premiere of Terrifier 3, a 30th anniversary Speed reunion with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and focus on filmmakers Sam Raimi and Shane Black are among the many highlights of the 12th edition of Beyond Fest, which will hit Los Angeles starting Sept. 25.

The 2024 Beyond Fest lineup has officially been unveiled, and fans are ready for a spooky good festival.

The genre film festival will open with the highly-anticipated reimagining of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot.” The novel was originally brought to the screen in 1979 with a two-part miniseries and a 2004 film.

Now, director Gary Dauberman is giving the horror classic his own twist, with Lewis Pullman starring. The feature had a delayed debut as Warner Bros. pushed its slated September 2022 until Spring 2023 before pulling the film from a U.S. theatrical release all together. “Salem’s Lot” will debut on Max October 3, and will have its world premiere on the big screen for Beyond Fest.

The festival will take place from September 25 to October 9.

Beyond Fest will close with Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Cloud.” Kurosawa will be in-person to launch a 7-film retrospective with the festival. A Guy Maddin retrospective will also take place...

The Writers Guild of America West announced on Tuesday that writer, producer and director Walter Hill has been named the recipient of the guild’s 2024 Laurel Award for screenwriting achievement.

The Guild’s lifetime achievement award is presented to members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”

“Walter Hill’s impact on our industry is undeniable,” said Wgaw President Meredith Stiehm in a statement. “His unique style influenced and educated generations of screenwriters who followed. He has had an enduring, renowned career, and the Guild is honored to present him with the Screen Laurel Award.”

As the Television Academy reminds its 20,000-ish voters on almost a daily basis, there are only a few precious days left to cast a final ballot for the 75th Emmy Awards. They do not want people to procrastinate like yours truly, who just hasn’t gotten around to it yet (but I will this weekend). All ballots must be in by 10 pm Pt on Monday. William J. Immerman, a veteran movie producer who held senior executive positions at studios including 20th Century Fox, died June 24 at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes, his widow, Ginger Immerman told TheWrap on Friday. He was 85.

He began his career in 1965 at American International Pictures, then in 1974 moved to Twentieth Century Fox, where he served as vice president of Business Affairs and senior executive vice president. He oversaw hits including “Star Wars,” “Young Frankenstein” and “The Omen.”

At Cinema Group, where he was Chairman of the Board and President, he also executive produced the comedy “Take This Job and Shove It” for Avco Embassy and Walter Hill’s action film “Southern Comfort,” both in 1981.

Film and television writer-producer Joe Gayton, cocreator and executive producer of AMC’s “Hell on Wheels,” died May 14. He was 66 years old.

The news was confirmed to TheWrap by brother and longtime collaborator Tony Gayton, who said Joe’s death came following a four-year battle with prostate cancer.

“Joe was one of a kind. He was passionate, creative, loud, boisterous, argumentative, unfiltered, soft-hearted, hilarious and terrible at the politics of this cutthroat business,” he said in a statement. “He was a big brother, mentor, writing partner and best friend to me. Our hearts are shattered at his passing and we will miss him forever.”

Joe Gayton, a film and television writer-producer who co-created and executive produced the hit AMC series Hell on Wheels, died May 14 after a four-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 66.

Gayton got off to a fast start in Hollywood with Uncommon Valor, which he wrote when he was 23. The script was made into a movie starring Gene Hackman. Gayton also co-wrote with Lewis Colick the 1996 action comedy feature Bulletproof starring Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler.

For most of his career, Gayton collaborated with his brother, fellow writer-producer Tony Gayton. The duo created and executive produced the popular Western drama series Hell on Wheels, which ran on AMC for five seasons.

The Gaytons also developed together a number of TV projects, with several, including Southern Comfort for Fox and The Novice for USA, going to pilot. They also co-wrote the 2010 feature Faster, starring Dwayne Johnson.

US filmmaker’s ‘Dead for A Dollar’ screens at the festival.

US director, writer and producer Walter Hill will receive the Glory to the Filmmaker award at the Venice International Film Festival, which runs from August 31 – September 10.

The award is dedicated to a personality who has made a particularly original contribution to the contemporary film industry.

It will be presented to Hill before the screening of his new film, Dead For A Dollar, which is playing out of competition at Venice.

Hill has made over twenty films, ranging from classic westerns to action thrillers and noir dramas. His credits include 48 Hrs.

Following the death of actor Fred Ward, several of his former costars, including Kevin Bacon, Matthew Modine, Lou Diamond Phillips, Richard E. Grant, and Kate Mulgrew, shared their memories of working with the charmingly gruff star.

Bacon shared a photo of himself and Ward from the 1990 cult hit “Tremors,” writing, “So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I will always remember chatting about his love of Django Reinhardt and jazz guitar during our long hot days in the high desert. Rest In Peace Fred.” The two reunited in 2018 for a “Tremors” TV pilot that sadly was not picked up.

Reincarnation, artificial consciousness and augmented reality intersect in U.S. director Jake Wachtel’s Cambodia-set “Karmalink,” for which Variety can reveal the first trailer.

The sci-fi mystery will have its world premiere as the opening film of the Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week on Sept. 1.

Set in a near-future Phnom Penh, “Karmalink” is about a 13-year-old boy and his street-smart female friend who team up to search for a gold statue from the boy’s past lives, while traveling across town and also back in time.

But what begins as a hunt for a Buddhist treasure soon leads to greater discoveries in the digital realm that could be either enlightening or obliterating.

Wachtel, who grew up in Palo Alto, started developing the film in 2015, while teaching filmmaking in Phnom Penh. He cast two former students as his leads and shot the film on location after living in their community for several years.

Giler was also a screenwriter on films including ‘Alien3’ and ‘The Money Pit’.

David Giler, a producer and writer on the Alien franchise, has died aged 77. He had been suffering from cancer and died at his home in Bangkok on December 19.

His longtime friend, “Alien” producer Walter Hill, said in a statement, “If you knew David, you knew he was special. The magic of his personality is hard to describe: funny, angry, extremely knowledgeable, extremely well read; it was my privilege to write and produce with him, and more importantly, to have his close and deep friendship for nearly 50 years.”

Giler got his first major writing credit in 1962 when he wrote the teleplay for an episode of ABC’s “The Gallant Men.” Throughout the 1960s he continued to write episodes for series including “Burke’s Law” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”

Lagging a few weeks behind the rest of the world (where Russell Crowe road-rage thriller “Unhinged” released in several territories late last month), the United States is slowly seeing cinemas reopen in anticipation of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” — still optimistically dated for Sept. 3.

But that doesn’t mean film fans don’t have options, opening on drive-in screens, virtual cinemas and subscriptions services.

With more than 30 new movies releasing in the U.S. this week, Variety helps steer you to the most interesting of these choices. Take your pick of everything from hard-hitting dramas — including stirring Black history lessons “The 24th” and “Emperor” — to action movies such as “Cut Throat City” and “Train to Busan” sequel “Peninsula.” Family audiences will find “The One and Only Ivan” on Disney Plus, while those with more twisted sensibilities can choose to watch a “The Most Dangerous Game”-inspired humans-hunting-humans movie: Cambodian thriller “The Prey.

“The Prey” takes the classic “The Most Dangerous Game” scenario for a spin in the Cambodian jungle. Centered on a wrongly jailed cop being stalked by cashed-up creeps who get their kicks by hunting humans, this survival thriller doesn’t bring anything significantly new to the table but the frequency and quality of its gunplay and martial arts combat should keep most action fans happy. Directed, edited and co-written by Italian expat Jimmy Henderson, whose 2017 prison smackdown “Jailbreak” marked him as a talent to watch and was snapped up by Netflix, “The Prey” debuted at the Busan Film Fetival in 2018 and will open in select North American virtual cinemas on Aug. 21. VOD streaming commences on August 25.

Trumpeted as Cambodia’s first million-dollar action movie, “The Prey” can’t match “Jailbreak” for sheer excitement but does suggest that with more original and ambitious material Henderson could become a real force in Asian genre cinema.

Fighting their way through the crowded maze of people who are determined to achieve their goals, no matter what they have to do to others in the process, is a powerful motivator for many fearless leaders. Exclusive: Hell on Wheels creators Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton have signed with APA.

The sibling writing-producing duo created the praised historical drama series Hell on Wheels, which aired for five seasons on AMC.

Together, the veteran scribes have written numerous pilots, including Southern Comfort for Fox and The Novice for USA, as well as the 2010 feature film Faster, starring Dwayne Johnson. Separately, Tony Gayton also wrote The Salton Sea, directed by D.J. Caruso and starring Val Kilmer, and Murder by Numbers, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling. Joe Gayton wrote Ernest R. Dickenson-directed Bulletproof, starring Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans.

Joe and Tony Gayton are also repped by attorney Karl Austen.

In the midst of ongoing tensions between parts of the African-American community and law enforcement, Kate Davis and David Heilbroner seek to tell one person’s story of how they were affected by this. The result is the short documentary “Traffic Stop” (now viewable on HBO) which is one of this year’s nominees at the Oscars for Best Documentary Short.

While this marks the first nomination for both Davis and Heilbroner, Davis is no stranger to accolades. She won the Grand Jury Prize (Documentary) at Sundance in 2001 for “Southern Comfort” and won an Emmy for Best Directing for Nonfiction Programming in 2004 for the HBO doc, “Jockey.”

Austin Film Festival & Writers Conference will honor Walter Hill and Keenen Ivory Wayans for their extraordinary contributions to film and television, respectively, the festival announced Wednesday.

Hill, who will receive the Extraordinary Contribution to Film Award, wrote and directed notable films such as 48 Hrs., The Warriors, The Driver, Southern Comfort, Last Man Standing, Geronimo: An American Legend and Wild Bill. He also co-produced the sci-fi favorite Alien. Hill has contributed to television as well, receiving both the Emmy and DGA Awards in 2005 for his work directing the HBO neo-western Deadwood.

He had a strength on screen that was both palpable and genuine, and although his memorable screen presence will live on forever, it is with great sadness that we share the news that actor Sonny Landham has passed away at the age of 76.

According to the Associated Press, Landham passed away from congestive heart failure on August 17th at a hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Landham's sister, Dawn Boehler, confirmed the sad news.

An actor and stunt man, Landham is perhaps best known for his role as Billy, one of the commandos who goes up against a vicious alien hunter in the seminal sci-fi action film Predator.

Landham also had roles in several movies that have gone on to become only more beloved with the passing of time, including The Warriors, 48 Hrs., Poltergeist, and Southern Comfort. Landham also worked behind the camera, directing 1996's Billy Lone Bear, in which he also starred.
