The fellow from the British Isles seems to not understand American humor, just as many people on this side of the pond are without a clue when viewing the British brand. Charlie did a fine job, and the review finds fault where fault doesn't lie. Admittedly, the writing left much to be desired (boiler plate scripts), but the consummate theater professional, Charlie) has nothing to be ashamed of, and made the most of what was presented to him. From his early life in Highland Falls, New York, to service for his country and the world during World War II, Mr. Durning has lived a full and rewarding life. The Cop and the Kid was an early attempt to utilize what has proved to be his gift of the combination of humor and pathos.
