With their parents away at a dinner party in Santa Barbara, teenager Libby Mannering (Andi Garrett), her younger sister Tess (Sharyl Locke), and Libby's friend Kit Austin (Sara Lane) decide to have some fun by randomly choosing names from the telephone book and placing prank calls. Libby places a call to a Steve Marak (John Ireland) and whispers, 'I saw what you did, and I know who you are,' an unfortunate choice of words because Marak has just murdered his wife and buried her in the woods. Marak thinks she witnessed the crime and sets out to find her.
I Saw What You Did is based on Out of the Dark (1964), a novel by American author Ursula Curtiss. The book was adapted for the movie by American scriptwriter William P. McGivern.
Tess is awakened by Spot's barking and realizes that they left him outside. She goes to let him in and is confronted by Marak. When she realizes who he is, she readily lets him into the house and calls for Libby. Libby explains to Marak that it was all a prank, he hands her back the car registration and leaves, but he lurks outside the window when she receives a phone call from Kit telling her that she just heard about a murder on the radio. When the description of the murderer matches that of Marak, Libby decides to call the police. As soon as she makes the call, Marak breaks through the window and re-enters the house. Tess runs outside but Marak follows her. Libby goes outside looking for Tess, sees her hiding behind a tree, and tells her to run for the car. An arm suddenly reaches out and pulls her behind the garage. As Libby attempts to start the car, Marak pops up in the back seat and starts strangling her. Suddenly, a shot rings out, and Marak slumps back in the seat, having been shot in the back by a policeman. Tess appears from behind the garage, led by Kit's father (John Archer), who reveals that he finally got Kit to tell him what they did that night. Tess and Libby hug each other, and Tess bemoans the fact that Marak broke the window and pulled out the telephone wires. Libby says that they can always replace the window, 'but we're not going to be using the phone for a long, long time.' Their tears then turn to laughter, and they walk back into the house while Mr Austin talks to the police. The final scene shows a telephone pole connected to numerous wires, all of which seem to be abuzz with conversation. An operator's voice then says, 'Sorry...you have reached a disconnected number.'
