"We all had our tuxedos ready. I'm not even joking," Colin Farrell said in a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, reflecting on the 2004 historical epic "Alexander," directed by Oliver Stone. "We were all like, 'Right, lads, we're off to the Oscars. This is a sure thing.' And then it came out."
It came out, indeed, and as alluded to by the Oscar-nominated actor, things didn't exactly go as planned. In the aftermath of Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winning "Gladiator," Stone finally had the opportunity to scrape together funding for his three-hour take on Alexander the Great. The timing seemed perfect. The cast was a murderer's row. The production had all of the resources in the world at its disposal. But by just about every measure,...

Some classic rock stars produced hits that overshadowed everything else they ever wrote by a country mile. For example, Cat Stevens’ most famous song is probably “Wild World.” He revealed that the track was intended as a “warning” to someone he knew. He also, at least temporarily, gave the song away.
Cat Stevens said ‘Wild World’ ‘was sort of a semi-obituary’
Stevens gifted the world a number of hit singles, including the original compositions “Peace Train,” “Father and Son,” “Matthew and Son,” and “Moonshadow,” as well as his defiantly old-fashioned cover of the Christian hymn “Morning Has Broken.” “Wild World” might have overshadowed all of his other hits. Throwback stations seem to play it at least once per day.
During a 2019 interview with SongwriterUniverse, Stevens discussed the origin of “Wild World.” “‘Wild World’ was sort of a semi-obituary to my love affair with somebody, and it wasn’t very acrimonious … just simply stating a fact,...

Nicole Kidman was pushed outside of her “comfort zone” while making erotic thriller ‘Babygirl’.The 57-year-old actress stars in the movie as chief executive Romy, who is married to Jacob (Antonio Banderas) but becomes tangled up in an intense affair with her intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson).Nicole has now admitted that the steamy subject matter was a big reason why she signed on because it was “exciting and bold”.When asked whether the sexual themes made her reluctant to appear in the film during an appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, Kidman said: “Not at all. I loved the script, I love supporting women in the industry, and it was just really good. It is exciting and bold, and I am always looking to push out of my comfort zone.”The ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ star described the film as “Weird, but in a good way”, and said she was initially...

It’s safe to say that when Josh Brolin gets riled up, he doesn’t mince words. The actor, 56, widely praised for bringing Thanos to life in the MCU, has recently stirred the pot over what he sees as yet another Oscar oversight. This time, he’s got his sights set on the Academy’s failure to nominate Dune director Denis Villeneuve for his visionary work on the 2021 sci-fi epic. And, let’s just say—Brolin is less than thrilled.

This year, Dune: Part Two is back and, according to Brolin, this sequel has only raised the bar. But hold on—this isn’t the first time the Academy Awards has left some serious talent out in the cold when it comes to nominations.

Classic rock and Broadway crossed paths more than you might think. For example, Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son” was initially meant for a musical based on major historical events. It’s for the best that the musical never came out.
Cat Stevens’ ‘Father and Son’ was supposed to be part of about the U.S.S.R.
During a 2020 interview with GQ, Stevens discussed his album Tea for the Tillerman. “‘Father and Son’ is probably the most prominent and profound song on the album,” the “Peace Train” singer said. “It doesn’t necessarily refer to my dad. It was originally written for a musical. So, after I had my first expedition, you might say, into the pop fray, which happened in ’67, ’68, I was taken very ill with tuberculosis and I was suddenly erased from the scene.”
The musical was called Revolussia and it centered on the Russian Revolution. Notably, some...

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

Nicole Kidman is an icon in the world of Hollywood for a reason. Bringing a layer of mystery to her roles while simultaneously seeming like the most welcoming person in any cast, the actress is almost paradoxical with her acting. From recent works like Babygirl to older classic projects like Moulin Rouge, she is ingrained into the very fabric of the film industry.

While there are more than a few iconic works that Kidman has starred in her career, there is one film that caters to a completely different audience. In 1998, she starred in Practical Magic alongside Sandra Bullock. The film was so iconic that it is currently getting a sequel.
However, this is not surprising considering the rare dynamic that Kidman and Bullock shared.

The Rolling Stones‘ songs are in so many movies, but Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! is not one of them. A controversial Rolling Stones track was going to serve as a villain song in the movie. That wasn’t in the cards. However, the connection between The Rolling Stones and Moulin Rouge! did not stop there.
1 song by The Rolling Stones was kept out of ‘Moulin Rouge!’ for non-artistic reasons
The soundtrack of Moulin Rouge! includes songs from many different genres, including pop, soul, and Broadway music, but it’s at its best when it recontextualizes classic rock songs as show tunes. The film includes hits by The Beatles, Nirvana, Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, U2, Kiss, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney & Wings, and The Police. In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, music supervisor Anton Monsted revealed that several songs were kept out of the final cut of the film, including...

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise met on the sets of the film, Days of Thunder, in 1989 and got married in 1990. The high-profile relationship caught many eyes at the time and the couple adopted two children, born in 1992 and 1995. However, things didn’t work out between the couple and they announced their separation in 2001. Interestingly, Kidman’s career was at an all-time high at this time.

Cat Stevens has released some breathtakingly beautiful classic rock songs. However, one of his most popular ballads feels hypocritical in retrospect. It’s a shame because the song has a timeless message.
1 Cat Stevens song from the Vietnam War era didn’t age well
The Vietnam War deeply impacted the rock music of the late 1960s and 1970s. Tunes like John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance,” The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville,” and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” dealt with the war.
One of the most moving of these songs was Stevens’ folk ditty “Peace Train.” It spoke to the times, but also had a message about harmony that will be relevant until the end of time.
Sadly, “Peace Train” has become hypocritical. Stevens, a Muslim, condemned Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses, which commits blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad. Stevens said that anyone who insults the...

Clint Eastwood might've appeared in 14 films after "Unforgiven" but his Oscar-winning directorial effort really does feel like a fond farewell to the genre that defined his career in front of the camera. For many, his stint as Will Munny, a worn down gunman making one last stand, sits as one of his finest and he could've hung up his acting hat for good there and then in one of the best Western movies of all time. For his co-star, Morgan Freeman, though, there's an earlier role rooted in Eastwood's time in the Old West that outshines even that.
Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes in 2023, the five-time Oscar nominee (one of which he won for his performance in Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby"), was asked about his favorite films. Of his five truly fascinating choices, one of them was Eastwood's own cold-blooded 1976 cowboy movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." The film saw Easwood play the titular character,...

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman.”
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”
One of her biggest challenges was her turn as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s 2021 film “Being the Ricardos.

Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy has returned with “Let the Flowers Go,” a collaboration with fellow ’80s vocalist Boy George.
Featuring Murphy’s belting baritone and George’s dramatic vibrato, the duet is a power ballad ode to transformation and becoming rooted in your identity in your younger years. “I’ve been changing/ And mamma don’t know,” they sing in harmony. “Let her tears fall/ And make the flowers grow.” Stream “Let the Flowers Go” below.
The song was produced by Martin “Youth” Glover of the band Killing Joke, who had worked with both Murphy and George on their respective solo records. “Let the Flowers Go” dates back to 2014, when Murphy was working on his solo album Lion. Youth presented the unfinished track written by George and himself to Murphy, who added to the track and presented it back to George.

Lacma’s Art Film gala entered its brat era over the weekend.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s marquee fundraiser took place on the grounds of the L.A. cultural institution on Saturday night as the rebellious spirit of its musical headliner Charli Xcx and her culture shifting brat album seemed to permeate the festivities. The carpet got a green-hued makeover, Anna Wintour praised honoree Baz Luhrmann’s frenetic creative spirit and how he once convinced Rihanna to dance on a table at the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian caused a stir by wearing another rare piece of fashion history and Chloe Sevigny demanded the crowd “make some fucking noise” for Charli, who turned Lacma into an electric after hours with a quick set featuring her Sweat Tour mate Troye Sivan. It even rained a little, a very brat-coded thing for Mother Nature to do in a city like Los Angeles.

Image Source: 20th Century Studios As a director, Baz Luhrmann has never been afraid to blend genres within the same film, giving his movies a highly stylized look and feel. When he decided to do the musical Moulin Rouge, he wanted the film to pay homage to the classic musicals of yesteryear while still giving a wink and a nod to pop culture at the time. As Nicole Kidman was preparing to star in the film, at the time of the release, she talked about how she got ready by watching as many old musicals as she possibly could. If you’re planning on attending Tom Rothman’s party in November, you’ll need a costume. Rumor has it the Sony chairman is asking invitees to the event — which is a joint birthday bash with his wife, actress Jessica Harper — to dress up as characters from movies made under his reign. Luckily, it’s a long list of wardrobe choices, stretching back a multitude of decades. You could go as Jack Dawson from 1997’s Titanic. Or Satine from 2001’s Moulin Rouge! Or Miranda Priestly from 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada. Or Rick Dalton from 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The point here is, Rothman is turning 70 and has been in charge at Sony (and before that, Fox) for a very, very long time.
As it happens, he’s not the only silver mogul in Hollywood these days. Bob Iger is 73 and has been running Disney off and on for nearly 20 years.

The film is based on a true story and follows two down-on-their-luck musicians, played by Jackman and Hudson, who form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band and “prove it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams,” per the official logline.
“Hustle and Flow” and “Coming 2 America” director Craig Brewer will write and direct the Focus Features film.
“Song Sung Blue” is based on the 2008 documentary by director Greg Kohs, here an executive producer of the fictional adaptation.

Australian actress Nicole Kidman began her professional career in 1983 with an appearance in the holiday film "Bush Christmas," and followed it immediately with Brian Trenchard-Smith's very watchable teens-rule actioner "BMX Bandits." She was 16 at the time. Kidman was a striking screen presence, however, and she immediately began a busy career that hasn't slowed since. For six years, Kidman was all over Aussie TV and cinema, with the actress finally breaking into Hollywood in 1989 with her role in the taut thriller "Dead Calm." In 1990, she was cast opposite Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's "Days of Thunder," and her superstar status was cemented. She also began dating Cruise that year, and they married in 1990, staying one of Hollywood's most visible power couples for a decade.

Nicole Kidman could be on the verge of receiving her sixth acting Oscar bid for the upcoming A24 erotic thriller “Babygirl,” directed by Halina Reijn, best known for the indie film “Bodies Bodies Bodies” (2022). With the movie already making its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and Kidman taking home the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, let’s take a closer look at her five previous Oscar nominations, including her one win.
Her first recognition came for the Baz Luhrmann jukebox musical “Moulin Rouge” (2001), where Kidman portrayed a cabaret performer and courtesan in love with an English poet. It is certainly one of her most physical performances, as she performs extravagant musical numbers and showcases strong emotions as her character Satine suffers through an illness. Kidman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and was part of the movie’s eight Oscar nominations,...

The Best Actress race is already extremely stacked as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with at least 10 significant contenders about to battle it out for only five slots at the Oscars. But if there’s one performance that is going to make it in, I believe it’s Nicole Kidman in “Babygirl,” written and directed by Halina Reijn. Why? Here are my top five reasons.
1. The performance.
Kidman gives a ferocious tour-de-force performance in “Babygirl,” which played at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and is opening in theaters in December. Kidman plays a high-powered CEO named Romy who enters a relationship with an intern named Samuel (Harris Dickinson) and in turn puts her job and family in jeopardy. Romy makes questionable choices throughout the narrative, but Kidman always keeps her grounded and empathetic in what I believe is her best movie performance since 2010’s “Rabbit Hole.”

The Walking Dead is over. Long live The Walking Dead. The zombie franchise has continued in the form of spinoffs and expansions, one of which takes fan favorite character Daryl Dixon to the shores of sunny, rotting, fetid France. The first season debuted last year to pretty good reviews. Now the second season is on its way. Will lightning strike twice in the French countryside? Will it hit a zombie? Because that would be helpful.
Early buzz is good, and the show is upping the ante by bringing Daryl's longtime bestie Carol (Melissa McBride) into the mix. Carol showed up at the end of the first season but will play a much bigger role this time around.
The fun kicks off a couple Sundays from now. Here's the complete release schedule for all six episodes:

Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen's is one of the all-time great Hollywood bromances. As Star Wars' Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the duo have fought alongside one another, with one another, and given fans some of the most iconic moments in modern cinema. It's not without good reason that Christensen and McGregor's on-screen reunion in 2022's Obi-Wan Kenobi series — and the recent, long overdue cultural reappraisal of the Prequel Trilogy — has triggered a swell of warm and fuzzies across the galaxy. And yesterday, as McGregor — whose illustrious filmography also includes Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, and Doctor Sleep among many others — took his well-earned place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame surrounded by friends and family, Christensen was right there leading the tributes to his co-star and close friend.
During a poignant speech, Christensen recalled being given "the biggest hug" by McGregor when they first met on the set of Attack Of The Clones,...

Cole Escola’s Oh Mary! broke the house record at the Lyceum Theatre last week, bringing in $1.057 million and besting its own record from July 21.
The production, written and starring Escola as a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, played to 100 percent capacity last week, as it has for the majority of its run. The show previously broke the record with a gross of $1.054 million and has extended its previously limited run through Nov. 10.
The revival of The Wiz went out on a high on its final week on Broadway, bringing in $1.94 million, the highest total of its run, and playing to just over 100 percent capacity. The show, which features a revised book by Amber Ruffin, came to Broadway on March 29 after touring across America and will now re-embark on a North American tour in February.

If the movies of the 2000s were defined by a period of violent transition (both onscreen and off), the music that was written for those movies captured the full sweep of that change — and the endless possibilities it allowed for in turn. The aughts were absent a single identifying element as strong to the decade as synths were to the ’80s or symphonic grandeur was to the ’90s, and to judge by our list of the period’s best scores it sounds like they might have been all the better for it.
On the one hand, the 2000s saw venerated masters like John Williams and Terence Blanchard deliver some of the greatest work of their careers, while journeyman like “Lord of the Rings” composer Howard Shore emerged into legendary status with a single...

Oh, Mary!, a sleeper hit if ever there was one, and The Outsiders, a musical so popular that more than 200 people bought tickets last week knowing they wouldn’t get an actual seat, are continuing what can only be described as blazing hot summers.
Consider Oh, Mary!, writer/actor Cole Escola’s campy, hysterically funny period play (flawlessly directed by Sam Pinkleton) about an alcoholic, off-the-rails Mary Todd Lincoln (that would be Escola), her doomed, sneaky gay president husband (Conrad Ricamora) and an amorous acting teacher (James Scully). It was a hit last year Off Broadway, but that certainly doesn’t always translate to Broadway success.
But this time, it did. Oh, Mary! has been selling out for weeks, and has been pulling in more than $1 million a week since July 21. Last week (the week ending August 4) Oh, Mary!, a smallish play with a cast of five and a set that,...

The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV customers can watch some true classics.
Apple TV is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

Though many thought Nicole Kidman should have been welcomed into the Academy's good graces with 1995's To Die For, it would take six years until that early promise materialized in the actress' first Oscar nomination. Curiously, the path to such success went through a return to down under cinema that started to take shape with The Portrait of a Lady by kiwi auteur Jane Campion. This was also when Kidman began to challenge herself conspicuously by collaborating with true visionaries, picking projects based on who was behind the camera. That line of thinking took the actress into the dark reveries of Kubrick's swan song and, ultimately, the musical riot of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!, which started shooting shortly after Eyes Wide Shut hit theaters.

Kate Hudson is joining the chain of actresses who aspire to portray Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks in a biopic.
The “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” star told Rolling Stone that playing Nicks onscreen is her dream role; Hudson recently made her own music debut with album “Glorious.”
“To me it’s also about the interesting life, and being able to tell that story correctly,” Hudson said. “The ultimate is Stevie [Nicks]. But my family might, like, disown me if I ever got a chance to play Stevie. ‘Cause they’d be like, ‘Can we not go method?’ I would probably go way too far into that character.”
Hudson added, “I think for all girls who love rock, Stevie’s just our number one. Her whole life experience and the music. Fleetwood Mac, that whole journey from before Stevie to after Stevie? And her relationship with Lindsey? It’s like a trilogy.
