With Jon M Chu’s toe-tapping Wicked film in cinemas now, why is its two-part status getting us all riled up?
It’s all Peter Jackson’s fault, really.
When folks complain about Hollywood’s relatively new obsession with cutting films in half, few seem to be talking about the New Zealand director’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy – if only because the narrative hack-job was done more than 40 years before production started. Jrr Tolkien apparently wasn’t best pleased when his publisher insisted on chopping his fantasy epic into some more manageable chunks – by the time New Line was in the mood to put Frodo’s story on-camera, he wasn’t best-placed to complain (he’d died in 1974).
But by the time Return Of The King swept to awards and box office glory in 2004, no one seemed to mind that a single, continuous story had been sold to...

The preview for the eighth Tom Cruise-starring "Mission: Impossible" movie was released on November 11, 2024, and it looks to be the final film Cruise will be involved with. Titled "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," the preview is full of portent and global threats that, perhaps naturally, only Ethan Hunt can quell. The story, it seems, will continue directly from "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Part One" (the "Part One" has since been dropped) as it follows Hunt's rivalry with a dangerous artificial intelligence broadcasting from a lost submarine somewhere in the Arctic Ocean.
Since 1996, the "Mission: Impossible" movies have been gigantic cinematic events, with each one drawing huge crowds, and allowing Tom Cruise to increasingly assert his influence over their creative elements. Cruise doesn't write or direct, but a lot of the direction, editing, casting, and music rests in his hands. Brian De Palma's 1996 original is downright...

When millions around the world sit down in theaters to see Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked” later this month, they’ll see something on the title card that can’t be found anywhere in Universal’s no-expense-spared marketing campaign: “Part I.”
The adaptation was split into two films that were shot simultaneously, but “Wicked” is the latest two-parter to downplay its open-ended nature in the marketing build-up to the film’s release. Films like “Dune,” “Fast X” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” tucked their cliffhanger endings away from trailers and promotional material. And while some audience members may have been surprised when the credits rolled, each film was a box office hit.
At a time when the box office is still trying to get back above $10 billion in North America, hiding the fact that a film comes in two parts is avoiding a potential negative.

Hollywood is brimming with skillful actors who perform their own stunts, but not a lot of major A-listers are well-trained and actual fighters. We know the likes of Tom Cruise, who delivers death-defying choreography in his movies, and we know Sylvester Stallone, who has been an iconic action star since the ‘70s.

Although Cruise previously denied the speculations of Mi 8 being his swansong as Ethan Hunt, per new rumors, the actor is reportedly eying for Glen Powell to carry the mantle forward. If these rumors are to be believed, this might end up giving Powell a huge boost over his rumored rival, Timothée Chalamet.

Here’s some news that blasted in on a pair of exploding sunglasses fired out of a rocket: Ethan Hunt is back. Ever since last year’s pulse-pounding Mission: Impossible entry Dead Reckoning, audiences have been left wondering how Tom Cruise’s Imf agent will take down the nefarious AI algorithm known as The Entity – and since that film (originally titled Dead Reckoning Part 1) only told half the story, we’ve all been on tenterhooks to see what’s to come in Part 2. Now, we know that it’ll arrive under the title Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. But does that just mean the ‘final’ part of this particular story? Or will it be, as much rumoured, the end of Cruise’s Mission: Impossible saga? Watch the trailer here for clues:

It is time to rejoice, as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is back to save every living human from doom in "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning," which will continue the convoluted saga of "Dead Reckoning." The newly released trailer for "The Final Reckoning" is as thrilling and exciting as you would expect, with a lot of characters from previous installments — including Rolf Saxon's William Donloe and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane — coming back with covert intentions. And you know what else is back? The Rabbit's Foot, the dangerous biological hazard from "Mission: Impossible III," makes an appearance in the "Final Reckoning" trailer, leaving us to mull over its fate since we last saw it in Ethan's hands and what its return could mean for the conclusion to the "Mission: Impossible" films.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for what could be the last time. On Monday, Paramount revealed the official title for “Mission: Impossible 8,” which is slated for theaters in May. The title, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” along with the general “it has all come down to this” vibe of the trailer, may lead you to believe this will be the final “M:i” film, but that’s not necessarily the case. Cruise doesn’t seem to be ready to hang up his running shoes yet.
While the fate of the franchise is a little bit up in the air, there’s no question about whether or not 62-year-old Cruise has still got it. In the teaser trailer that reveals the title, Cruise is seen sprinting through multiple locations, in his underwear grappling with a knife-wielding assassin, and hanging off the wing of a single engine plane. Tom Cruise’s famous spy series will come to a dramatic end with “Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning,” which will be released in theaters on May 23, 2025. The eighth movie in the long-running action series looks like it will be an explosive conclusion.
The first trailer and image for the movie were shared by Cruise on social media, hinting at a dangerous AI program called “The Entity” that needs to be stopped. The actor showed how emotional the movie was by writing in the caption, “Every choice has led to this.”
Following on from 2023’s “Dead Reckoning,” the new movie will continue with Ethan Hunt racing against time to keep The Entity from getting into the wrong hands. Cruise will be joined by newbie Hannah Waddingham and returning cast members Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames.
Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed the last three movies in the series, will also direct this last one.

Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed the last three movies in the series, will also direct this last one.

Good things come to those who wait, and we’ve been waiting a long, long time for “Mission: Impossible 8” to get a title. Well, we got that and more on Monday. (Ethan Hunt is an Army alum — Happy Veterans Day to all!) If you need a catch up on the previous films, here’s IndieWire’s ranking of the “Mission: Impossible” movies.
In the new film’s teaser trailer, Hunt (Tom Cruise) can be seen sprinting through a variety of landscapes and hardscapes — you simply do not mess with the Cruise formula. At one point, Hunt is running after an airplane that he presumably catches. At another he’s knife-fighting in his underwear; if you weren’t already reminded, from him rappelling into the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony, Tom Cruise is in his 60s.

Ethan Hunt is back ... for the final time? The trailer for the next "Mission: Impossible" film is here, and it brings with it a new title that raises an eyebrow or two. The flick is called "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," and the word "final" in there seems to imply this will be the last adventure for the Impossible Mission Force. At one point, this movie was going to be called "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two," as the previous entry was "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One." But "Dead Reckoning Part One" underperformed at the box office, and studio Paramount quickly dropped the "Part One" from the title by the time the film hit digital and Blu-ray.
The title may be different, but "The Final Reckoning" will still be a continuation of the previous film, as "Dead Reckoning" ended on a cliffhanger with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) getting away.

“The Final Reckoning” is now the official title for “Mission: Impossible 8,” which was originally slated to be the “Part Two” to 2023’s “Dead Reckoning.” It’s scheduled to be released on May 23, 2025. The film originally was set for 2022, but was delayed multiple times by the pandemic and SAG-AFTRA actors strike.
Cruise revealed the title and a poster Monday morning, along with the caption “Every choice has led to this.”
In the action-packed trailer, Cruise scuba dives and explores a wrecked submarine, flies and falls out of a biplane and does a lot of running. Angela Bassett is also revealed to be back as CIA Director Erika Sloane, after she first appeared in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

The first “Mission: Impossible 8” trailer is here, and it looks like we could be reaching the end of the road for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. The film, which is now titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” plays on the nostalgia for the franchise, including footage from the Brian De Palma-directed 1996 “Mission: Impossible” movie that started it all.
Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed every “Mission” movie since “Rogue Nation,” is back in the director’s chair this time around for a sequel that went through a bit of an evolution. Initially, “Mission: Impossible 7” and “Mission: Impossible 8” were shot back-to-back and titled “Dead Reckoning – Part One” and “Dead Reckoning – Part Two.” But after the disappointing box office performance of the seventh film, it was retitled for home release to just “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and “M:i 8” got a new title. Thus, “The Final Reckoning” was born.

Tom Cruise is a very powerful celebrity in terms of influence and popularity, but many are probably unaware of how much grip he has on the casting of his own projects. Obviously, this means he can forbid actors from leaving or let them go just as easily.

Rebecca Ferguson broke the hearts of Mission: Impossible fans when she exited the Tom Cruise-led franchise in the seventh film. It was a very final exit as the fan-favorite Ilsa Faust meets her end in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. While Ferguson clarified her stance on why she couldn’t continue as Ilsa, there appear to be more reasons that contributed to her exit.

Tom Cruise was looking at a career in wrestling when an injury pushed him into acting. Cruise was a real go-getter during his wrestling days and kept it the same way in his movies. When it came to dangerous stunts, the actor took it upon himself to deliver it with authenticity. He performs the stunts in his films himself, thanks to his athletic background.

Tom Cruise has been an integral part of the Hollywood machine, propelling it from the infancy of 21st-century espionage thrillers to heights never achieved before. With his Mission: Impossible saga, Cruise ditched his Oscar-baiting filmography from the 90s and transitioned into a full-time action hero, earning the title of the world’s only remaining true movie star.

Tom Cruise is reportedly set to get back behind the wheel in a sequel to 1990’s Days Of Thunder. More details within.
Legacy sequels tend to be a mixed bag, though Top Gun: Maverick got the balance between new and nostalgia just right. The script develops Maverick in a way that is respectful to the original film, and the sweeping aerial cinematography makes the flying sequences look magnificent.

Blockbuster films often feel like a sprint to the finish, with studios clamoring for ever-bigger explosions and more pulse-pounding plots. Tom Cruise, who has thrilled us for years as the indomitable superspy Ethan Hunt, now finds himself facing the unsettling possibility that his beloved Mission: Impossible franchise might be nearing its end.
Paramount is reportedly contemplating labeling this installment as the franchise’s swan song. Cruise, on the other hand, isn’t quite ready to hang up his spy gadgets just yet.

Tom Cruise is looking to make a sequel to another of his action classics, and it’s not one that you’d expect.
The actor is talking to Paramount about a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR racing film Days of Thunder.
On its surface, the idea seems rather bold. Thunder wasn’t considered a box office hit upon its release (making $157 million globally with a production budget of $60 million), and the film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. But having revived and modernized 1986’s Top Gun with 2022’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, the actor believes he can work similar magic with his racing drama (which, like the original Top Gun, was a Paramount film produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Tony Scott). A Thunder revival has been floated before — Paramount once pitched a reboot of the title as a TV show for Paramount , an idea that Cruise nixed.

Mission: Impossible 8, starring Tom Cruise, has been shooting for nearly two years – and it’s set to cost over $300m.
The next entry in the Mission: Impossible series could be facing an uphill battle to reach profitability, should a new report regarding the project’s budget be accurate.
All the way back in March, production on the film restarted following a pause in production. Originally, the film was set to be shot back-to-back with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning but then a global pandemic and a near-year of Hollywood strikes complicated things just a touch. The production of the as-yet untitled eighth film was suspended, reportedly with about 40% in the can.
Back in March, production resumed with the stakes high, not least because Dead Reckoning – despite earning an impressive $567m at the global box office – came with a prettty hefty price tag. It was itself a film that had endured a pricey production,...

Two things that have remained constant throughout all the Mission: Impossible entries are Tom Cruise’s awe-inspiring stunt works and Ving Rhames’ Luther Stickell. With the eighth installment on the way, things aren’t looking to shift much, both for Stickell and Cruise’s death-defying stunts.

Steven Knight has talked up the “mindblowing” Peaky Blinders movie cast, but he is keeping tight-lipped about the project as it gears up for production.
Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan have joined Cillian Murphy, who will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby, leader of the eponymous Birmingham gangster family.
Plot details of the Harper-directed feature are being held close, but Knight has previously told Deadline that the story will be set during World War II. Netflix greenlighted the Peaky feature in June.
“We’ve announced Rebecca Ferguson, we’ve announced Barry Keoghan, we’ve got some more announcements coming,” Knight told the Rts London Convention. “It’s set in the Second World War and it’s really good.”
Producers are Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason. The feature will be made in association with BBC Film.

Tom Cruise is widely celebrated for leveling up his death-defying stunts with each Mission Impossible installment. The film series is renowned for featuring the most significant action sequences in pop culture, all thanks to Cruise’s fearlessness. According to director John Woo, all of it started when the Vanilla Sky actor begged him to perform a dangerous stunt in Mission Impossible 2.

In an illustrious four-decade-long career, Tom Cruise has scaled unimaginable heights (both literally and figuratively). The Mission :Impossible star has left an indelible mark on Hollywood with the sleuth of blockbusters to his name. As he looks forward to leave his mark in the profession well into the 60s, the roles are still coming in thick for him. And it seems like he is determined to walk with a laurel that will bring him on at the same pedestal as Leonardo DiCaprio.

However, when the franchise took off in 1996, later gaining momentum in the early Aughts, little did the fans (and other interested parties) know what lay in store for them.

Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise did a wonderful job in adapting the 1966 series of the same name. In fact, the high-octane entertainment delivered by Tom Cruise and his team has become so celebrated in pop culture that the adaptations have far surpassed the original work. However, such progress in a saturated genre like action thriller has its own set of dissidents.

Tom Cruise, the generational movie star of the postmodern Hollywood era, has been stuck in his good guy reputation for far too long. Unlike some characters who were born to play the hero or the archnemesis, Cruise toes the line between the two just as he keeps his audience increasingly fascinated with an over-the-top show of what he is actually capable of.

In a world where Homelander is a clear villain because he dares to spill blood to preserve the sanctity of his own beliefs, Tom Cruise is a clear hero because he dares to risk his own neck to protect the sanctity of the theatrical experience. And although the comparison may be too far-reaching, the point stands that Cruise is only a modern-day hero whose sole mission in life is to leave behind a legacy that is unparalleled and unquestionable in its own right.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.
