I was very excited for this show to premiere because the ads for it on NBC looked hilarious. It seems though after a half hour of cringes, this show will have a lifespan of about a few weeks. It has its ups and downs...but mostly downs.
First of all, Josh Cooke is great. He plays the role of Nathan very well. Nathan is a very lovable character right from the start, or maybe that's just me because I'm a sucker for neurotic freaks. He's a math genius "trying to avoid the inevitable" mental breakdown that runs in his family of intellectuals by working below his potential in an old record store. He has all of these little ticks that you just love. Mr. Cooke will certainly rise above this all.
As for Jennifer Finnigan, I do not have such kind words. She annoyed the hell out of me! Marni was way too out there to be funny. She takes "quirky" to a whole new level....a bad one. Let's face it, "quirky" , and squeaky for that matter, DO NOT WORK. Marni kills the show.
The Writing: The man in the wheel chair at the restaurant was great. Nathan's friend, I think his name was Bowie, had some good lines. The random man in the closet was funny until you found out he was clown living in a walk-in closet. That died really quick. Nathan on the elevator, funny. That same old woman lives in my building. That's pretty much all as far as the good. The worst part is Marni. She has the worst lines. The part about her boss being on her ass was just plain cheesy. Like I said before, she's just too out there. Nothing she did or said was funny. At the very end when Nathan gave Marni a gas mask, seriously, what the f***? Who does that? It was just to unbelievable to be funny. My biggest complaint is that the two just moved too fast! It was like what, 2 days and she was already crying over him? They should have done the wooing thing a little longer, but not anything like Good Morning Miami.
All and all, i give this show one star, and thats for Nathan and his friend Bowie. The rest stinks. I give it about 6 weeks, maybe?
