Netflix has submitted a total of 32 TV programs for awards consideration at the upcoming Golden Globes, and 20 for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Gold Derby has learned exclusively.
Some of the streamer’s notable TV titles include Season 2 of “Squid Game,” the survival thriller starring Emmy and SAG winner Lee Jung-jae; popular new comedy “Nobody Wants This,” about an agnostic woman (Kristen Bell) and an unconventional rabbi (Adam Brody); and “Baby Reindeer,” the buzzy limited series that recently set the Emmys on fire, going home with six trophies. See the full list of submissions below, broken down by show.
Note that the Golden Globes have lead actor and lead actress categories that are separated by TV genres (drama/comedy/limited), but that the supporting actor and supporting actress races encapsulate all genres. As of last year, the organization also now offers an award for the best stand-up comedy special on television.

Picture this: A restaurant in Rome, a chance encounter as table mates sharing space over dinner and an inspired conversation about fashion, art, film, marketing and more. It’s precisely that scene, which unfolded in Italy last April as Amazon MGM Studios head of global marketing Sue Kroll found herself seated across from Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson at a last-minute dinner ahead of a glitzy Rome red carpet premiere for Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, released by the studio and featuring costumes by the acclaimed Cfda international designer of the year.

In a competitive situation, Deadline is told that the streamer has secured the rights to Weather Girl, an apocalyptic one-woman play about a Californian weather girl in meltdown that staged sold out shows throughout August to rave reviews. We understand there were several U.S. buyers interested in Weather Girl and Netflix has just won out.
The play’s writer Brian Watkins (Outer Range) and star Julia McDermott (Women of the Movement) are both attached to the TV version, we are told. The project is in early stage development and may not make it to greenlight.

Labels like “comedy” and “drama” are fundamentally meaningless — except when it comes to TV awards, when the distinction can mean the difference between win and lose or a nomination and a snub. That’s why the denizens of Hollywood, eager to buck tradition and format for the sake of art most of the year, tend to lose their shit around Emmy season.
The annual debate resurfaced this past summer when The Bear scored 23 Emmy nominations and broke 30 Rock’s record for the most for a comedy in a single season. The genre, after all, was long-dominated by sitcoms — Frasier being the all-time Emmy with 37 wins, followed closely by The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Cheers. And while there’s no arguing that The Bear is an incredibly well-made piece of television, as evidenced by the eventual 11 wins in a diverse pool of categories, it’s not exactly brimming with levity.

Last month, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos enjoyed a coronation of sorts at the Royal Television Society conference in London, which the streaming giant was hosting. In a show of muscle, Netflix pulled in appearances from speakers including “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight and soccer star David Beckham, both of whom have projects at Netflix. Sarandos also took the opportunity to announce a first-look deal with “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd.
But it was his keynote speech that the audience, which included U.K. captains of industry such as BBC boss Tim Davie, had come to see. In it, Sarandos paid homage to the U.K.’s TV production sector but warned of the industry’s need to “embrace change.”
In recent years, however, it is the streamers who have had to change, particularly in Europe. When Netflix first arrived on the continent less than a decade ago, it imported a...

Timestalker, Joker, and Baby Reindeer all deal with the nasty side of romantic entanglement – is this the year of the bad romance?
In Alice Lowe’s Timestalker, in cinemas today, our put-upon heroine isn’t the luckiest in love.
After chasing the same scoundrel across 400 years and taking multiple sharp instruments to the head, you’d have thought Lowe’s Agnes would have learnt her lesson. Alas, the more Aneurin Barnard’s rogue signals his disinterest (usually by running away immediately after her grisly demise), the more she’s convinced he’s the man for her. This is because, though Barnard’s character lives multiple lives as a heretic, a highwayman and a heartthrob, the greatest trick the film pulls is the reveal that Agnes herself isn’t very nice.
Aptly, Timestalker arrives a week after Joker: Folie à Deux told the story of a similar character at the other end of the budgetary spectrum.

Jessica Gunning just won the Emmy Award for her breakout role on Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” And now she’d better make some room on her awards mantel, because Gold Derby predicts she will prevail at the upcoming Golden Globes, too. (Maybe she will sing her speech this time?)
The English actress leads our 2025 Golden Globe predictions for Best TV Supporting Actress, a catch-all category that combines performances from dramas, comedies, limited series and made-for-television movies. Gunning inhabits the character of Martha Scott, a former lawyer who begins stalking comedian/bartender Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd). The plot of “Baby Reindeer” is adapted from Gadd’s own life, and he just won three Emmys for producing, writing and starring in the project.

Earlier this month, UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer said that the TV and film business has to allow creators to be a “little more daring” in their work because “it’s gotten a bit repetitive.”
Zimmer was echoing comments from one of his agency’s hottest new clients, Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd, who proclaimed from the Emmys stage that “no slump was ever broken without a willingness to take risks.“
This is a message that is being touted across the agency, including by Allan Haldeman and Dan Erlij, partners and co-heads of the agency’s TV literary division.
Erlij said it was encouraging that a show like Baby Reindeer could clean up at the Emmys. “I think that larger spirit of people really being excited about original, new ideas, being recognized, finding an audience and being validated is great,” he said.

The lawsuit filed by Fiona Harvey, the Scottish woman who says she is the inspiration for Martha from Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” will go forward, after a California judge ruled that the show falsely claimed to be a “true story.”
Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled that the award-winning limited series “appears to present itself as fact” rather than star Richard Gadd’s interpretation. Klausner said “despite using fictional names for its characters, the Series is heavily based on reality” and that the show opens with “this is based on a true story” means Netflix can’t dismiss the lawsuit.
“There is a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking in a court of law,” he wrote in the ruling. “Likewise, there are major differences between inappropriate touching and sexual assault, as well as between shoving and gouging another’s eyes. While plaintiff’s purported actions are reprehensible, defendants...

A US-based judge has ruled that Fiona Harvey’s £132m case against Netflix drama Baby Reindeer can be pursued on the grounds of defamation after the show was wrongly billed as a “true story.”
Judge Gary Klausner noted that the show’s opening episode begins with the line “This is a true story,” which he said allows viewers to take the subsequent story as factual. He added that while Harvey’s “purported actions are reprehensible,” those depicted in the show are worse than what Harvey was accused of in reality.

Despite pleas from creator Richard Gadd to focus on the positive outcomes of his Netflix hit Baby Reindeer, a judge has ruled that Fiona Harvey – who says she is the real-life inspiration for stalker Martha Scott – can move forward with her $170 million defamation lawsuit.
A statement from U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner read, in part: “Defendants argue that a reasonable person would not understand that Martha is, in actual fact, Plaintiff, such that any statements about Martha would be about Plaintiff. In particular, Defendants argue that the similarities between Martha and Plaintiff are so broad that a reasonable person would not have been able to identify her. The Court disagrees.”
The written statement went on to further outline why Fiona Harvey has a case against Netflix and Baby Reindeer, saying the similarities between both Harvey and her so-called fictional counterpart are too specific to be considered broad characteristics.

Netflix’s motion to have the Baby Reindeer lawsuit dismissed was rejected Friday by the judge overseeing the case between Fiona Harvey — the alleged inspiration behind Martha in the hit series — and the streaming service.
In June, Harvey sued Netflix for then-$50 million, claiming “defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violations of Harvey’s right of publicity, arising out of the brutal lies Defendants told about her in the television series, Baby Reindeer.”

Netflix suffered a loss in court this week amid their attempts to have a defamation suit relating to their hit series Baby Reindeer dismissed.
Back in June, the streaming platform was sued for $170 million by Fiona Harvey. She alleges that the character Martha in the show is based on her, and that she was defamed by the portrayal.
The streaming platform vowed to defend themselves and attempted to have the case dismissed in court. However, their attempts were unsuccessful.

A federal judge has allowed a $170 million defamation lawsuit against Netflix to move ahead regarding their hit series “Baby Reindeer.” U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner denied Netflix’s attempt to dismiss the case filed by Fiona Harvey. Harvey claims the show falsely portrayed her through a character named Martha.
The court found that a reasonable person could connect the Martha character to Harvey based on several similarities. Both worked as Scottish lawyers living in London. Their ages also matched details about the show’s creator Richard Gadd. Specifically, the series depicted Martha as being convicted twice for stalking, which Harvey says is untrue.
While Netflix argued Harvey’s reputation was already damaged, the judge ruled the portrayal could still be considered defamatory. Key evidence that may complicate Netflix’s defense came to light as well. The company had acknowledged to UK Parliament that Harvey was indeed never convicted of stalking.

Sometimes stories blur the lines between fact and fiction, leaving audiences curious about the real-life events behind compelling narratives. Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, a series that has taken viewers on a rollercoaster of emotions, is no different. Through its harrowing storyline and unsettling subject matter, the show sheds light on the darker side of human interaction, i.e., stalking, trauma, and unresolved emotional scars.

But as the drama unfolds, one question arises, i.e., how much of Baby Reindeer is based on reality, and what happened to the individuals involved? A judge ruled Friday that the Netflix show “Baby Reindeer” did not live up to its billing as a “true story,” allowing the real-life “Martha” to pursue her defamation lawsuit.
The woman, Fiona Harvey, alleged that the series, created by Richard Gadd, falsely implied that she sexually assaulted Gadd and gouged his eyes, and had been sent to prison for stalking him.
Netflix filed a motion to throw out the suit in July. In his defense, Gadd revealed that Harvey had stalked him for years when he worked at a London pub, would sometimes pinch his buttocks, and had sent him thousands of disturbing emails and voicemail messages. He ultimately reported her to the police and got a “harassment warning” — though she was not criminally prosecuted or sent to jail.

Coming off an armful of big Emmy wins earlier this month, Baby Reindeer and Netflix took a big hit today as a federal judge ruled the big bucks defamation case against the dark comedy and the streamer will go forward.
First filed by self-declared real life Martha in June, the $170 million action is still set for a May 6, 2025 trial start, as Netflix came up short on their free speech proclaiming anti-slapp defense of the so-called “true story” saga of a UK comedian stalked by a female Scottish lawyer in London. Citing the much watched and highly acclaimed Baby Reindeer’s creator and star, the streamer has pledged from Day One “to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd‘s right to tell his story.”

A federal court has advanced the key defamation claim in a lawsuit against Netflix over its portrayal of a woman depicted as a stalker in Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, while dismissing other allegations.
U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner on Friday found that Netflix could’ve defamed Fiona Harvey, the inspiration behind Jessica Gunning’s Martha depicted as a twice-convicted stalker sentenced to five years in prison for sexual assault, by stating that the series was “based on a true story.” Netflix may have “insisted on adding” the disclaimer despite Gadd’s concerns, the court said.
“This suggests a reckless disregard of whether the statements in the series were false,” the order stated.
Baby Reindeer follows Gadd’s Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters Martha at the bar where he works. Martha is then revealed to be a dangerous, serial stalker. Over the course of multiple years,...

Anyone bored by this year’s Emmy winners just hasn’t been paying attention. This was a revolution. The idea that “Shōgun” could enter the drama race and then break the history books with 18 wins was astounding — and sure didn’t seem possible even a year ago. The fact that “Hacks,” in its third season, could upset “The Bear” — even as the incumbent still smashed the record for most wins for a comedy in a single year — has changed the balance of power in that race.
And then there was perhaps the biggest shift of the night: “The Traitors” ending the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” streak in reality competition series. That’s a field where “The Amazing Race” won 10, “Drag Race” won five and “The Voice” has four — so there wasn’t much movement in the category. “The Traitors” has at least busted things up, making for a more dynamic playing field.

Erik and Lyle Menendez are getting their own non-“Monsters” platform on Netflix.
Continuing a recent trend for true-crime series, Netflix will soon debut a documentary on the Menendez brothers to accompany their fictionalized Ryan Murphy series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which was released last week. The documentary, titled “The Menendez Brothers” and directed by Alejandro Hartmann, will be released on October 7.
Hartmann’s doc aims to offer “another perspective” on the infamous case. We got the trailer today — watch it below.
This one-two combination of a scripted series and then a documentary mirrors the strategy Peacock has employed with its “Dr. Death” seasons. NBCUniversal’s Peacock also recently released a series of Scott Peterson interviews from prison, which followed Netflix’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson.”

Fiona Muir-Harvey, who claimed to be the inspiration for Martha on Baby Reindeer, has said that the show has scared her from leaving her own house. The allegedly autobiographical mini-series revolves around an up-and-coming comedian whose life takes a dark turn after a kind gesture. Harvey previously talked about being a possible inspiration for the character on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
The Miniseries Stars The Series’ Creator
Baby Reindeer starts up in a London pub, when an aspiring comedian, Donny Dunn, tries to cheer up a customer named Martha. However, Martha begins to become obsessive with Donny after the kind gesture. After a time-skip, Donny finds a mentor with television writer Darrien O’Connor, who begins to abuse him.
Baby Reindeer has also been the subject of critical acclaim. Most notably, the miniseries won six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Gadd himself won awards for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Lead Actor.

Following Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd’s treble win at last weekend’s Emmy Awards – for acting, writing and producing the Netflix hit – the woman who claims he defamed her in his story of being stalked has shared the extent of her suffering.
Fiona Harvey told the Daily Mail newspaper that she is afraid to leave her home, following her identification as the inspiration for the drama about a failing comedian (Gadd playing himself) befriending a lonely woman Martha, who proceeds to bombard him with texts, emails and visits to the pub where he works.
Harvey said: “I am afraid to go outside out of fear of being attacked. Some weeks I do not leave my apartment. I am suffering from, among other things, constant panic attacks, chest pains, anxiety, nightmares, depression, nervousness, stomach pains, loss of appetite, fear and insomnia.”

Winning Emmys for a series you conceived, wrote, produced, directed, and starred in is just about the highest achievement you could imagine. But when that series is wrapped in controversy, it’s hard to avoid it even amid the celebration. Richard Gadd, the man behind Baby Reindeer, tried his best, however, on the night that the Netflix drama took home four Emmys.
In the press room at Sunday night’s Emmys, Richard Gadd was posed with a question about Fiona Harvey – the supposed inspiration for Martha Scott – who has launched a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix for the harmful depiction in Baby Reindeer, chiefly tied to defamation and emotional distress. But Gadd wouldn’t take the bait, redirecting with, “This is a night of celebration. I really don’t want to talk about any of that stuff. It’s easy in this day and age to focus on the negatives. Netflix Dishes The Data
Being transparent: Long-serving Netflix execs love to ruminate on the era when the company was a DVD mailing service, but what felt pertinent this week was the streamer’s more recent transformation into an outfit that is very much at ease with transparency over viewing data. The murky days of walled gardens and numbers being kept hidden from even the most in-the-know producers appear behind us, and Ted Sarandos was in the English capital to beat this particular drum. In a fortuitous bit of timing that was probably more execution than luck, the CEO keynoted a Netflix-sponsored Rts London Convention event in the week that the streamer’s latest data dump revealed the Brits have this year, in common parlance,...

Awards shows are often only as memorable as the winners and their acceptance speeches. Heading into the 76th Emmys, the conventional wisdom was that Television Academy voters would make it a predictable sweep for “Shōgun” and “The Bear.” And indeed, both series did well, making history with their victories. But there were still enough surprises during the telecast, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, to make for an interesting night.
The biggest shocker, of course, came at the end of the broadcast, when “Hacks” pulled off an upset win over frontrunner “The Bear” in the outstanding comedy series category. That was a clear flex by the writer flank of the TV Academy to reward a beloved show that revolves around the business of comedy — as a point of contrast to shows that tip to the drama side of the dramedy equation. For producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay,...

Updated with additional details: Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of Netflix, is challenging his streaming competitors to be as “transparent” as his company is when it comes to publicizing what viewers are watching.
Touting Netflix’s next viewer report, due on Thursday, Sarandos said on Wednesday at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City that “I don’t think we could be any more transparent than that,” and he added, “I’m hoping that the other folks in the business will follow suit on that.”
Sarandos intimated that Netflix would look very good in a side-by-side comparison, because people will be able to see a “phenomenal” amount of daily Netflix viewership happening across the globe. He said the viewership report will also demonstrate that “the biggest movies of the year are these movies that are made for Netflix and only playing on Netflix.”

Newly minted three-time Emmy Award winning actor and writer Richard Gadd's celebrations continue. The Baby Reindeer star and creator took home all three Emmys he was up for on Sunday, Sept. 15, and just two days later, he and Netflix locked down a deal to stay in business.
According to Deadline, Gadd signed on with Netflix for a multi-year first-look deal, which basically means the streamer will have the "first look" at new scripted content Gadd creates. In the coming years, we will surely be seeing much more of Gadd on our Netflix watch lists, whether starring in new shows and movies or behind the scenes as their creator and writer.
Baby Reindeer was released in April 2024 and became an overnight global sensation, ultimately taking up residence in Netflix's top 10 English-language shows ranking for about two months and racking up over 88 million views within its first three months. Even though...

Ted Sarandos isn’t losing too much sleep about Netflix series like the Emmy darling “Baby Reindeer” being sued for taking inspiration from true stories.
The Netflix co-ceo said during a keynote address at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention 2024 (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the $170 million lawsuit against the “Baby Reindeer” production is indicative of a uniquely British debate over series disclaimers about being inspired by a true story.
Sarandos said that the debate is “not happening anywhere else in the world” except Britain. He added that the show “is not a documentary” as “there are elements that are dramatized.”

The government recently returned their passports, however Moghaddam posted on Instagram that she was stopped by authorities at Tehran’s airport on the way to Sweden and informed that both filmmmakers were prohibited from leaving the country.

Exclusive: Richard Roth, the lawyer for Fiona Harvey, Baby Reindeer‘s real-life Martha, has responded to the show’s success at the Emmy Awards.
In a statement to Deadline, Roth said: “The Emmy wins confirm that Netflix’s strategy worked, going for the higher revenues and awards while leaving honesty and transparency behind.”
Roth is pursuing a $170M defamation lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that the darkly comic hit series, billed as a “true story,” was “the biggest lie in television history.”
They are suing by claiming Baby Reindeer portrayed Harvey, via the Martha character, as “a twice convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison.” Netflix has conceded that Harvey has never been convicted of stalking. A trial is set for 2025.
Roth’s comments follow a staunch defense of the show from Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, who has been in London speaking at a Royal Television Society event.

The UK culture secretary Lisa Nandy is to bang the drum for more TV productions to be made out of London and the south-east, saying that it should shame the TV industry that it remains one of the most centralised in the UK.

“For all of the efforts made by many of you in this room, it should shame us all that television is one of...
