TV medical dramas have been the rage for decades with the emphasis on hospital-based medical shows. However, the first responder drama can be just as thrilling. Firefighters are the usual focus yet there can also be paramedics or other types of emergency workers. The shows are usually packed with thrills and the focus on “emergency of the week” storylines.
The best ones also have compelling characters, well written subplots and enthrall viewers every week. There are a lot out there and thanks to streaming, you can find plenty around. For anyone into a first responder drama, these dozen are worth tracking down on streaming.
Fire Country “Pilot” – Max Thieriot stars as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Station 19 series finale “One Last Time.”] In the Station 19 series finale, best friends and platonic soulmates Travis (Jay Hayden) and Vic (Barrett Doss) jetted off into the next chapter of their lives, heading to Washington, D.C., so Vic could lead the Crisis One program. Meanwhile, Maya (Danielle Savre) and Carina (Stefania Spampinato) learned they were expecting a baby. Station 19 is over, but could ABC explore a new chapter in the nation’s capital or focus on one of the show’s most beloved couples? Co-showrunners Peter Paige and Zoanne Clack responded to spinoff possibilities. “We’ve been pitched several spinoffs. Crisis One is one of them,” Paige told TV Insider. “There’s even a poster floating around the internet if you go on Twitter right now. We were also pitched a Fosters-like spinoff for Maya and Carina. I feel like there was a third one. We’ve heard several,...

Exclusive: In 2017, Jason George left ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy to help launch its spinoff series, Station 19. For seven seasons, he was a series regular on the firefighter drama as Ben Warren while making frequent guest appearances on the mothership series. With Station 19 coming to an end, all signs point to him going back to Grey’s Anatomy, a return which the Station 19 finale helped set up.
According to sources, there is no deal in place and the exact capacity in which George would return to Grey’s Anatomy is unclear but talks are ongoing, and the intent is to have him back on the show where he has been since Season 6, including a series regular stint from S12-S14, before moving to Station 19. Reps for ABC and ABC Signature, which produces Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, declined comment.
Rumblings about George potentially rejoining Grey’s Anatomy next season started in January.

In the series finale, which aired on May 30, the crew battled wildfires and a grisly fire tornado that put everyone’s lives in jeopardy. The final episode included flash-forwards during moments of crisis and showed viewers the characters’ potential futures. One flash-forward featured the return of a beloved character in a touching moment that brought Vic’s (Barrett Doss) story full circle. Below, Station 19 showrunners Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige opened up to TV Insider about crafting the series finale, if those flash-forwards are actually reality, and the future of the characters in the Grey’s Anatomy universe. Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from ABC’s Station 19 series finale.
After 7 seasons, the time has finally come to say goodbye to Seattle’s hardest-working firefighters on ABC’s Station 19. As they say, all good things must come to an end. But, thanks to some gifts left behind in the finale by showrunners Peter Paige and Zoanne Clack and the writers, fans can expand on the firefighters’ stories well beyond tonight.
The episode titled “One Last Time” continues the story from last week’s episode as Station 19 is battling a raging wildfire targeting Seattle. Everyone is in danger but they’re keeping cool heads and working together to protect anyone else from getting hurt. On screen and off, Station 19’s Barrett Doss (Victoria “Vic” Hughes) and Jay Hayden (Travis Montgomery) are great friends. As the show neared the airing of its last original episodes (the finale airs May 30), in separate interviews, the actors talked about their surprise at the unexpected cancellation, proudly playing firefighters, their most difficult, dangerous and favorite scenes, and what’s it like for Montgomery working with a costar who’s also a romantic partner (Jaina Lee Ortiz). What was your reaction when Station 19 was canceled as the seventh season was starting? Jay Hayden: I was surprised. We have a very strong fan base and when I did an Rv trip across the country with my kids one summer, I learned how many people watched this show, which was really nice. It's time to say goodbye to Station 19, and I am not ready.
Station 19 Season 7 Episode 9 was the first half of a two-part series finale, and this episode was heartbreaking in all the worst ways.
Vic's big Crisis One announcement left some members of the department reeling, especially Travis, and Maya and Carina faced an excruciating wait to find out if their IVF cycle was successful.
Finding out that Vic would be leaving Seattle to run Crisis One in D.C. wasn't a shock, but the thought of Nineteen without her is hard.
Hey, Shondaland, what are the odds we could get a Crisis One spinoff based in Washington, D.C., starring Barrett Doss?
Ideally, Travis would go with Vic, and then we wouldn't have to say goodbye to our favorite set of besties in the world.
But daydreams about possible spinoffs aside, this show is a hard one to think...

Maybe we should have seen it coming, back in Season 6 of Station 19. But when Vic made up “peer-to-peer assessments” as an excuse to check on alcoholic captain Beckett, who she feared was suicidal, we thought that she was just being her usual caring, compassionate self. And at the time, before Theo revealed himself to be an altogether awful boyfriend, perhaps that was all Hughes was doing.

The sirens you hear on social media are the sounds of diehard Station 19 fans sounding the alarm over the cancellation of the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.

Exclusive: The upcoming seventh season will be the last for ABC’s Station 19. The decision, early in production on the season, would allow producers to craft a proper ending for the first responder drama, a spinoff from the network’s flagship Grey’s Anatomy.
Before it signs off, Station 19 will hit the 100th episode mark in Season 7, which was impacted by the double Hollywood strikes. The series has aired 95 episodes to date; its seventh season will consist of 10 episodes.
Boosted by frequent Grey’s Anatomy crossovers, over the last few seasons, Station 19 established itself as ABC’s No.2 drama series behind Grey’s. Over its run, the series also has been lauded for tackling important — and sometimes difficult — topics and recently received a Sentinel Award from Hollywood, Health & Society for its depiction of systemic racism in Season 6.
