Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt shared impeccable chemistry when they were paired together in the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The chemistry eventually transitioned into a romance, which caused a prominent scandal after Jolie was accused of causing Pitt and Jennifer Aniston to split. The film received mixed reviews from the critics but was a commercial success.

On Monday, October 28th, Prime Video hosted a screening and panel conversation of episode 108 of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” at The West Hollywood Edition Screening Room in Los Angeles. Following the screening, the audience filled with Screen Actors Guild members was treated to a panel conversation moderated by Variety senior entertainment writer, Angelique Jackson, featuring Emmy-nominated actress Maya Erskine (“Jane Smith”).
While discussing her connection to Jane, Erskine stated, “I just identified with someone who feels like such an outsider in life — and never quite fitting in, and looking for her place in society, looking for her identity to be solidified in this world… that is something we can all relate to, that longing for connection, that longing to feel seen by somebody so all of that was interesting for me.”

Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.
For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios are looking for a new John and Jane to star in Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2. There are apparently some A-list names in the mix, with the outlet saying that musician Billie Eilish could join the series. She previously made her acting debut in an episode of Donald Glover’s Swarm.
The first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as “two lonely strangers who land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other.

Amazon had to raid its (very sizable) safe to bring Phoebe Waller-Bridge in-house — but at least Prime Video will (eventually) get “Tomb Raider” out of their giant, extended deal, Jen Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, wants to remind everybody.
In 2019, Waller-Bridge, the “Fleabag” star and creator, signed a three-year deal at Amazon worth a reported $20 million annually. The deal was renewed with very similar terms in 2022. With “Tomb Raider” taking forever, a “Sign Here” adaptation still in development, and Waller-Bridge bailing on the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series (she was replaced by Maya Erskine), Amazon has exactly nothing to show for its gigantic investment. But Salke recently told Variety that she does not regret the overall deal with Waller-Bridge.
“When we look at a longterm commitment to a creator like Phoebe — we’re so happy now that we retained her because she’s obsessed with and grew up playing Lara Croft/’Tomb Raider,...

A24 has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Pillion, the debut feature of British director Harry Lighton (Wren Boys) from Poor Things producers Element Pictures starring Harry Melling (The Pale Blue Eye) and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman, Succession).
Described as a “funny, filthy romance,” Pillion sees Skarsgård play Ray, an ” impossibly handsome leader of a bike gang” who takes on Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower, to be his new submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life and introduces him to a community of kinky, queer bikers. But as Colin dives deeper into Ray’s world, he begins to question whether the life of a 24/7 submissive is really for him.
Lighton, BAFTA-nominated for his 2017 short Wren Boys, directed Pillion from his own script which is loosely inspired by Adam Mars-Jones’ 2019 novel Box Hill. The film wrapped production this summer.

According to recent research from Amazon Ads, 72% of monthly streaming viewers want to see more authentic, cross-cultural stories in the media. That study, titled “From Ads to Zeitgeist,” examines why streaming is at the forefront of the globalization of storytelling.
“It’s an interesting time in the world of television and content creation,” said Nick Pepper, head of wholly owned content for Amazon MGM Studios, sitting down to discuss the trend toward globalization at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit, presented by City National Bank. In a world where the entertainment industry rarely reads between the lines, Anna Sawai’s story is like that final plot twist we never saw coming—but are absolutely thrilled about. The star of FX’s Shōgun recently walked away with the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 76th Emmy Awards, etching her name in history as the first Japanese performer to win this award.

But did you know that before overwhelming us in the samurai epic, she was kicking it J-pop style? Yes, Sawai was part of a J-pop group but quickly left after realizing that the industry’s approach was not music to her ears. From small roles in Netflix’s Giri/Haji to a pulse-pounding appearance in F9, haven’t we all hit the jackpot with her decision to pivot career paths?

This year, fewer franchise shows were nominated at the 76th Emmy Awards, which aired on Sunday, leaving room for other high-profile series to shine, such as FX’s “Shogun” and “The Bear,” two titles with a leading number of nominations.
One of the most anticipated categories of the night was Best Actress and Actor in a Drama Series.
Among the 10 nominated actors, the question arises: Who has made the most impact on audiences? Popularity alone isn’t enough to determine this. It’s also essential to consider audiences’ sentiments about each actor. That’s where Parrot Analytics’ Audience Solutions data comes in, revealing the emotions driving demand for each talent.
By combining demand data with audience sentiment, Jennifer Aniston emerged as the most in-demand actress during the first half of 2024 and had the second-highest level of positive sentiment. Aniston, a household name for over 25 years since her role as Rachel on “Friends,...

And just like that, another hotly contested Emmy awards season race has come to a close. After last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony into January of this year, last night the glitzy statue-doling bash's 76th edition — this year hosted by Schitt's Creek's Eugene and Dan Levy — took place at the Peacock Theater in LA. And on a night of few major surprises, the two most nominated shows of the year — samurai epic Shōgun and kitchen-based "comedy" The Bear — got their hands ("Hands!") on 18 and 11 awards respectively, including historic Outstanding Actor and Actress In A Drama wins for the former's Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, and second Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor wins for the latter's Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

The 2024 Emmy Awards were filled with several memorable moments throughout the night on Sunday, from historical wins and powerful speeches to heartfelt cast reunions and political jokes. Some of them included Anna Sawai, Liza Colón-Zayas and Hiroyuki Sanada making history with their wins; Candice Bergen making a catty J.D. Vance joke; and The West Wing, Happy Days and Saturday Night Live casts reuniting onstage. Below, The Hollywood Reporter highlights some of the night’s unforgettable moments.
John Leguizamo Celebrates Diverse Emmy Nominees in Powerful Speech
John Leguizamo is “almost happy and certainly less angry” with the nominees for the 2024 Emmys. Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.
Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.
Shogun was named best dramatic series and took home both lead acting wins for Hiroyuku Sanada and Anna Sawai, who became the first actress of Asian descent to win the category. The show itself became the first mostly not in the English language to win the series award.

Anna Sawai made history after winning the Emmy for best drama actress for Shogun during Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys.
With her first Emmy win, Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win in the lead actress in a drama series category at the Emmys.
Sawai was nominated alongside Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).
When taking the stage, a visibly emotional Sawai quipped, “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.”
She began her speech by thanking the Academy for nominating her alongside people she “grew up watching and love.” She went on to thank the FX team for “believing in our story” as well as co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for giving her “the role of a lifetime” as Lady Mariko.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. “Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.
Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.
Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.
Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”
Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.
After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”

On Sunday we are celebrating the winners of the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the second time this year after January’s strike-delayed 75th Emmys, but we know the results will be, at least in part, quite different (well maybe not for The Bear). So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.
Outstanding Drama Series
With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.
Along with extensive coverage on the nominees and odds for each category,...

Who else is ready for one of the biggest nights in television? I sure am! Awards shows are a pretty big deal for the industry. There's many shows, actors, and creatives behind-the-scenes who are recognized for the hard work they do. It's almost time for the 2024 Emmys! We've got a full watch guide for you so you know everything you need to know before the ceremony begins.
Emmys 2024 airs live Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. One of the reasons I'm so excited is because of the co-hosts this year. And that would be father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy! This is the first time either of them take on Mc duties for the awards show. I just know it's going to be great. Schitt's Creek was, and is, one of my favorite comedies.
So how exactly can you tune in? Where can you watch?...

Sarah Snook’s 2023 Best Drama Actress Emmy victory specifically came for her 23-minute and 40-second performance in the “Tailgate Party” episode of “Succession.” Whereas she ranked second in terms of physical screen time in her own lineup behind only Keri Russell, the 2024 group includes five nominees whose submitted performances outpace hers by up to 18 minutes, with two even surpassing Russell’s.
The six current drama actress contenders asked voters to consider their work in episodes in which they appear for an average of 28 minutes and 28 seconds (or 47.03% of the total running time). This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.
Said physical average is almost twice the size of the corresponding male one, whereas the 2023 results were flipped with...

Elizabeth Debicki’s first Emmy nomination for “The Crown” is associated with her nearly 16-minute turn in season five’s “Couple 31” installment, which was passed over in favor of a slightly longer performance delivered by Jennifer Coolidge on “The White Lotus.” As the clear frontrunner in the 2024 Best Drama Supporting Actress race, she has submitted a farewell season episode in which she appears for twice as long as before and thus outpaces the screen times of all but two of this year’s 25 other drama regular nominees.
The seven current drama supporting actress contenders submitted performances that last for an average of 17 minutes and 31 seconds, or 32.90% of their single episodes. This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen.
