Father and son Eugene and Dan Levy did a respectable job of hosting the 2024 Primetime Emmys, popping in just enough throughout the two-hour running time to guide the show without overstaying their welcome. Their opening bit avoided any controversial topics, and Dan Levy got a big laugh when he described the Emmys as broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services. Eugene also earned solid applause when he joked, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” while addressing the show’s controversial classification as a comedy.

Speaking of The Bear, the series was awarded four Emmys during the broadcast in the Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), and Outstanding Directing categories. But Hacks pulled off a surprise win, snagging the Comedy Series Emmy.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.

Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

FX’s Shogun and The Bear dominated the 76th Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night as they finished with 18 and 11 wins apiece, including last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, despite an upset in the comedy series category where HBO/Max’s Hacks was the surprise winner.

Shogun was named best dramatic series and took home both lead acting wins for Hiroyuku Sanada and Anna Sawai, who became the first actress of Asian descent to win the category. The show itself became the first mostly not in the English language to win the series award.

With her first Emmy win, Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win in the lead actress in a drama series category at the Emmys.

Sawai was nominated alongside Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).

When taking the stage, a visibly emotional Sawai quipped, “I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today.”

She began her speech by thanking the Academy for nominating her alongside people she “grew up watching and love.” She went on to thank the FX team for “believing in our story” as well as co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo for giving her “the role of a lifetime” as Lady Mariko.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.

Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. With her victory, Sawai beat out fellow nominees Jennifer Aniston (Apple TV ’s “The Morning Show”), Carrie Coon (HBO’s “The Gilded Age”), Maya Erskine (Amazon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Imelda Staunton (Netflix’s “The Crown”) and Reese Witherspoon (Apple TV ’s “The Morning Show”).

Sawai thanked the “Shogun” team but also paid tribute to her mom, who served as her inspiration. “Thank you John Landgraf and the whole FX team for believing in our story. Thank you, Justin and Rachel, for believing in me and giving me this role of a lifetime,” she said.

“Lastly, thank you to my team and thank you to my family. Mom, I love you. You are the reason I’m here.

History was made at the 2024 Emmy Awards with one show becoming the most-awarded series in a single season!

Television’s biggest night was held on Sunday (September 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, though many awards were also handed out last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony.

The FX series Shogun, which is streaming on Hulu, has won more awards for one single season of television than any other show in history. The series picked up 18 total wins for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series and lead acting awards for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

“Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.

Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.

Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.

Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”

Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.

After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.

“The Bear” broke its own record of 10 comedy wins for a single season, which it achieved last year, with its 11 trophies on Sunday, including directing for Christopher Storer. FX...

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.

The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”

Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.

So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.

Outstanding Drama Series

With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.

The Winner: SHŌGUN...

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.

Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.
