He wrote a novel, at night, based on his experience as a cop in South Central 90s LA while still a cop, with no idea to get it published. Originally, he intended to write a memoir then changed his mind and made it fictional. He met a guy at a party who was a small time publisher and he asked for a copy. He wanted to publish the novel and wanted to sign Will. Will reconsidered and got an agent who got him a two book deal with Penguin. His novel "L.A. Rex" began his professional writing career. Scott Rudin optioned the book.
