Mr. Malcolm’s List a wonderful Regency-era film is in theatres now.

​When she fails to meet an item on his list of requirements for a bride, Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) is jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor, Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). Feeling humiliated and determined to exact revenge, she convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he’s found the perfect woman…or the perfect hoax.

Directed by Emma Holly Jones, Mr. Malcolm’s List is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Allain, who also wrote the screenplay. Joining in the dance of love with Zawe Ashton, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, and Frieda Pinto is a brilliant cast that includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Park, and Theo James. Also making their mark are Divian Ladwa, and Sianad Gregory, plus many more.

For the team behind Bleecker Street’s enchanting Mr. Macolm’s List, determination and dedication were key to making a film that’s not only this summer’s sweetest romance, but in many ways, felt like an impossible feat.

During the New York premiere at the DGA Theatre, director Emma Holly Jones, screen and book writer Suzzane Allain and leading actors Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Freida Pinto spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the film’s long and rocky journey to screen, what makes its leading actors so special and the women who helped bring the inclusive regency rom-com to screen.

Congratulations are in order as Zawe Ashton and Tom Hiddleston are expecting their first baby together. The "Fresh Meat" actress, playwright, and director debuted her bump at the premiere of her new film "Mr. Malcolm's List" on June 29 at the DGA Theatre in New York. Hiddleston, who is most well-known for playing Loki in Marvel's "Thor," was not in attendance. Instead, the British star was accompanied by her costars Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Theo James, Freida Pinto and Sianad Gregory, and director Emma Holly Jones.

The 37-year-old, who will soon be joining her other half in the Marvel universe with her upcoming 2023 film "The Marvels," wore a gold beaded floor-length gown featuring a dramatic cape by Sabina Bilenko Couture, as she confirmed the news to Vogue in her "getting ready diary." Her blossoming bump was accentuated by the empire line cut.

Mr. Malcolm’s List portrays a slice of regency life with a dollop of an Austen-esque romantic sensibility, a tinge of an Oscar Wilde comedy, a bit of farce thrown in, and, of course, the longing to find true love. Steeped in the era, it is a perfect Regency film. But first, we must set the scene.

The plot: It all begins at the opera, during “the season”, and a lady of good social standing is out with the elusive Mr. Malcolm. Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) fails to measure up to a “list” of requirements for a bride and is jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). Humiliated and determined to exact revenge, Julia convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. British gangster or small-town British revenge-style movies are a dime a dozen. There are so many of them around, I assume because they are cheap to make and there’s an abundance of actors who will happily star of them. Because of this, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Directors like Shane Meadows have taken this idea but elevated it to a whole new level, and that’s hard to do. The Ballad of Billy McCrae and its director doesn’t quite do that but there’s still plenty of interest here.

We are introduced to Chris Blythe. A man who has returned to his home town in Wales with his tail between his legs after losing his fortune in Canada.

This Wales-set thriller is called The Ballad of Billy McCrae for unaccountable reasons – it’s quite obvious throughout that the story isn’t about the title character at all. McCrae is played by David Hayman, a fine actor who seems to get cast whenever a Scottish hard man is needed, but he’s very much in a secondary role here. The anchoring protagonist is Chris Blythe (Ian Virgo), who has returned from Canada to his small Welsh home town somewhat in disgrace after he lost a fortune under murky circumstances. He gets a job working for McCrae, a swaggering terrier of a man who runs a quarry business and has a sexy daughter named Elen.

Before you can say The Postman Always Rings Twice, Blythe and Elen are humping all over her bungalow,...

UK and Ireland distriibutor Munro Film has acquired Adam Oldroyd’s Sideshow and Chris Crow’s The Ballad of Billy McCrae from German sales agent Media Luna New Films.

Both titles are being prepped for release in cinemas in late autumn.

Sideshow is a comedy thriller about two inept criminals who break into the home of a washed-up psychic. It stars Les Dennis, Anthony Head and April Pearson and is produced by Cymru Films, Perfect Sphere and Sterling Pictures.

The film will have its world premiere at Cairo next week.

US distributor Gravitas Ventures has acquired two UK titles from German-based sales firm Media Luna for release in 2021.

The first is black comedy-thriller Sideshow, starring actor and TV presenter Les Dennis as a washed-up psychic who uses his old tricks when two inept criminals break into his home. Anthony Head, April Pearson and Nathan Clarke round out the cast of writer-director Adam Oldroyd’s feature debut.

The film will have its world premiere at the Cairo International Film Festival in Egypt on Tuesday (December 8) with Oldroyd in attendance.
