The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Editor’s note: This article includes mild spoilers for “Adult Swim Yule Log.”
All due respect to James Cameron and his underwater actors in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” but you can’t beat the filmmaking gamble of Casper Kelly’s “Adult Swim Yule Log.” Adult Swim’s first feature-length live action endeavor dropped without warning December 11 after the season finale of “Ricky and Morty”: A cozy two-minute yule log video morphs into a disturbing home invasion horror movie that becomes a supernatural cabin-in-the-woods thriller with a young couple (Justin Miles and Andrea Laing) who may be at the mercy of a haunted fireplace.
And then things get really weird, with everything from time travel to UFOs figuring into an unclassifiable odyssey. “My dream has been making movies,” Kelly told IndieWire over Zoom this week. “I thought now that I’ve got one, I’m going to put in everything I can.

This article contains major spoilers for "Adult Swim Yule Log."
In the age of streaming, the folks at Adult Swim are constantly proving the power of stumbling across a bizarre fever dream at 3:00 a.m. You wake up wondering if that commercial ("Unedited Footage of a Bear") about an ambiguous drug, which turns into a nightmarish spiral into the world of addiction, was something you hallucinated while in this dream state. Adult Swim is practically bred for surprises like that; it's one of the few reasons to actually hold onto your cable package.
Since 2009, the programming block has continually released bizarre shorts like these under the "Infomercial" banner, which allows its creatives to go wild and experiment. They're often released to channel viewers in the dead of night, with almost no marketing. However, a few of them slip through to the masses by means of viral success. Casper Kelly,...

Adult Swim’s first feature-length horror film is the holiday gift that keeps on giving and a standout genre experiment.
“It’s so hard to surprise people these days…Everybody’s seen everything.”
It’s two minutes before Adult Swim’s holiday yule log presentation finally shows its hand, breaks free of its defining formula, and begins to first hint that something bigger and more sinister than a seasonal celebration is afoot. A yule log video is a holiday tradition that’s supposed to provide its audience comfort through warm, continuous, predictable images. The Fireplace, alternatively, is the complete antithesis of this tradition as it unsettles and surprises the viewer through every single minute–yet, inexplicably, also still succeeds as a functional yule log video. This stealth feature film functions as a cornucopia of horror genre tropes that plays out like an ultra-stylized Dadaist Cabin in the Woods filtered through Adult Swim sensibilities.

With the secret out, Omega recruits Helen, who impresses everyone with her formidable skills (thanks to Tae Bo and yoga), and she joins Harry and his team of top-notch operatives, embarking on covert missions around the globe and an exhilarating life of danger and adventure – all while keeping their adventures a secret from their children. The renewed bond between them adds much-needed sizzle to the Taskers’ emotionally distant marriage and upends the top-secret world of Omega Sector. But, as Harry says,...

Plot: A controversial pastor and his wife, attempt to start their ministry again after a scandal nearly destroyed everything for the two.
Review: Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. That’s the title. The new comedic satire directed by Adamma Ebo examines a pastor and his wife dealing with a past scandal. And yes, it’s one that we’ve seen happen to a few famous televangelists and such, now and again. The film stars Sterling K. Brown as Lee-Curtis Childs, pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist Church. His wife, Trinitie Childs, is played by the talented Regina Hall. The two desperately attempt to bring their uplifting gospel words back to his congregation. Yet, with Lee-Curtis’ past and the desire to spend more and more money, the two may not be ready for the big leagues again.
Trinitie Childs hopes that she and her husband can, once again, find acceptance...

High schools have seen their share of monsters in the movies, be they werewolves (Teen Wolf, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Ginger Snaps), vampires (Twilight, My Best Friend is a Vampire), aliens (The Faculty), or just your average, garden-shear variety slasher (Prom Night, Scream, etc.). You might think that the 1987 horror film Zombie High attempts to bring the undead to the high school hallway. You would be wrong. For proof, check out Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray of Zombie High, which isn’t really a zombie movie and is barely even a horror film.

After last week's corker, The Walking Dead feels a little one-note in episode two. Here's Ron's review of Strangers...
This review contains spoilers.
5.2 Strangers
After last week's barn-burner (not literally, that was the end of season 2) of an episode, it's only natural for this week's return to the universe of The Walking Dead to be a bit of a let-down. Even if it was a great episode, and this one was pretty good, it's not going to compare to the non-stop action of Rambo Carol and her wave of undead camouflage washing over Terminus like a red tide of vengeance. No Sanctuary was thrilling, epic television, but if you want to enjoy Strangers to its fullest extent, pretend it never happened.
With that mindset in place, you may be ready for Strangers, the first think-piece episode for this season of The Walking Dead. Indeed, that seems to be the way...

Moral ambiguities abound in this week's episode of The Walking Dead. Here's Ron's review of Isolation...
This review contains spoilers.
4.3 Isolation
One of the enduring questions posed by The Walking Dead is a pretty simple one, and one we've all considered at one point or another. Just what, if anything, would you do to survive? Would you kill an innocent person if it increased your chances of living another day? Would you root through garbage to find food? For vast swaths of the world, these questions aren't hypothetical, but in most places, these questions are merely flights of fantasy. That's why they're the perfect sort of question to be asked by a show about zombies.
In extreme situations in the real world, otherwise normal people are capable of amazing feats. Or, at times, abhorrent feats. The Walking Dead has delved into the world of moral quandaries before.

Previously on Glee, Blaine Warbler found himself in possession of some confusing feelings about his crime-fighting sidekick, a conundrum experienced by many a man in cape and cowl over the spandexed years. Tina, too, got her Kinsey Scale all mixed up, and made a play for a gay. Kurt's first day at Nyada prompted him to hop into a time machine — Destination: McKinley High, May 19, 2009 — and pull his self out of the dumpster and twirl his self around and give his self a hug and a dozen high fives and an It Gets Better pep talk of epic proportions. Rachel sang real pretty and did whatever codependency thing. And Santana and Quinn existed in an alternate reality where the sun always shines and the birds always sing and the clouds are made of marshmallows and always they are loved and sometimes they love each other. There were plenty of astute observations surrounding this week's crazy episode of "The Bad Girls Club" (Mon., 9 p.m. Et on Oxygen). And they all settled around Christina, who initiated a physical throw-down with her roommates because ... well, that's the thing.
Christina said she has an irrational fear of waking up alone. So when she did wake up alone, she took off throughout the house to seek and find her roommates. After all, she woke up alone, so they must have turned on her? This all made sense to her.
New roommate Andrea was the voice of reason, immediately seeing what was going on. "Now you wanna fight me?" she asked Christine. "For what? ‘Cuz you woke up on the wrong side of the bed by yourself."
That about sums it up. Astute viewers at home went to Twitter, further analyzing this bizarre incident. They pointed out that Christina didn't wake up alone anyway,...
