Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV show — former or current — that handles mental illness well?
Joyce Eng (@joyceeng61), TVGuide.com
“Bojack Horseman,” especially Season 4, is almost peerless when it comes to a raw, honest portrayal of mental health. His depression and anxiety aren’t deployed as plot devices like we’ve seen plenty of times elsewhere; they’re just part of him and none of it is rubbed in your face. He’s allowed to be, break down, self-destruct, and the show never offers quick fixes or easy answers. “Stupid Piece of Sh*t” is a brutal depiction, even if you don’t suffer from depression or anxiety,...

Been hankering for the chance to go hands-on with Platinum Games’ upcoming action RPG NieR: Automata? You’re in luck – Square Enix has announced via Twitter that a playable demo will be available to download from the PlayStation Store worldwide on December 22. Previously only confirmed for Japan, Square Enix said during the Western release date confirmation at PlayStation Experience earlier this month that details on a demo for North America and Europe would be forthcoming.
While story specifics are a little foggy, we do know that – gameplay wise – the demo takes place in an abandoned factory, with players taking control of android 2B in order to destroy a dangerous weapon that’s made a home within its walls. Despite the practice having become quite popular, no save data or in-game bonuses will be carried over to the full game.

At its heart, storytelling is about immortalizing. The upcoming Broadway musical “Tuck Everlasting,” written by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle, with music and lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller, addresses this literally. Beginning previews March 31, the show brings to life onstage Natalie Babbitt’s novel about an immortal family and the young girl who befriends them. In the intimate environment of the Black Box Theatre at Nyu Tisch School of the Arts—10 days before the show opens to its first audience—composers and graduates of Nyu Tisch’s musical theater writing program Miller and Tysen, and book writer Federle discussed the process of adapting a work of fiction as a musical. Additionally, they performed excerpts from the score and reflected on the tricky nature of the business. With youth-oriented Broadway adaptations such as “School of Rock the Musical” and “Fun Home” on the Great White Way, the balancing act...

Benjamin Rigby (photo credit: Amelia Dowd).
Melbourne-based actor Benjamin Rigby has a solid list of credits, from Neighbours to Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries to The Secret River, but none of them are quite like his next gig - on Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, currently gearing up to shoot at Fox Studios.
"It's pretty insane", Rigby told If on the line from Melbourne.
"I've known since January, and it has been exceptionally difficult to keep it quiet. My mum and my workplace had to know, but it's been hard" (laughs).
Rigby has worked at Melbourne's Cinema Nova for six years, and "I might still have to go back there after the film and pay my rent. Six years of free movies is pretty good"..
Originally from the Gold Coast, the actor attended boarding school in country Queensland, where his drama class regularly went to see Black Box Theatre productions of Shakespeare at Usq in Toowoomba.

"It's a real potboiler that is boiling and boiling and boiling and erupts in a way that few films ever do," director Dan Trachtenberg, 34, exclaimed over his first full-length feature, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Well, it's certainly hard to argue with him.
From the opening Psycho-fueled moments to the allusions to Notorious to the surprising twist of a finale, it's hard to recall a recent film that made squirming in one's seat such a pleasurable pastime. Produced with a sure hand by J.J. Abrams, with a relentlessly unnerving score by Bear McCreary, razor-sharp editing by Stefan Grube, and wry plotting by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, there is a reason the audience at the screening I attended spilled its popcorn every which way. These folks were freaking out but without having to be exposed to the full panoply of gore and excessive physical violence that most horror films apply with a trowel.

Ireland/Canada, 2015
The scariest thing about intimacy is sharing your partner with the rest of the world. Trusting those delicate threads is a demanding trick that some people never master. From lover to lover, or parent to sibling, their love becomes a smothering blanket. Director Lenny Abrahamson’s riveting new drama, Room, deconstructs our need to possess someone, as well as the terror of letting them go. While the film’s second half lacks the urgency of its mesmerizing opening, an observant script and amazing performances make Room one of 2015’s most gut-wrenching viewing experiences.
Jack (Jacob Tremblay) has no reason to believe his 5th birthday will be any different than the previous 4 years he’s spent entirely inside of Room. He tells each piece of rickety furniture “Hello!” and tries to make friends with a little mouse that somehow found...

As long as there have been wars, there have been dramatic stories about returning soldiers, wounded in body or spirit. From The Odyssey to Quiara Alegría Hudes’s Elliot trilogy, with The Best Years of Our Lives and The Men and Coming Home and Arthur Laurents’s Home of the Brave in between, writers have sought to ennoble the efforts (and borrow the dramatic ironies) of veterans unable to rejoin the community they fought to defend. As each hero’s experience of war is different, so each new war seems to evolve its own metaphor for that failed reentry, from interfering gods to alcohol to drugs to Ptsd. Take Jess, the hero of Lindsey Ferrentino’s Ugly Lies the Bone, opening tonight at the Roundabout’s Black Box space beneath the Laura Pels Theatre. Jess has returned to her hometown on Florida’s “Space Coast” after three tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Allowances must be made for and by fans of the medical procedural. While our current Golden Age of TV has been a boon for lovers of superheroes, zombies and glowering male antiheroes, doc drama devotees have often had to make do with shows like Three Rivers, Black Box, Monday Mornings, 3 Lbs, The Night Shift and Emily Owen, MD. And if you can identify more than three of those shows, your brother-in-law probably works as a tech advisor or else you've been truly desperate for any manna in the wilderness. For two small town cops who tackle paranormal activities on an everyday basis, it's the looming threat of fatherhood that really gets their stomachs in knotted. That's the basic setup for Ryan Spindell's short film Bundle Of Nerves. Spindell, director of fest fave The Root Of The Problem, who is also hard at work on the feature horror anthology The Mortuary Collection, made Bundle Of Nerves for Black Box TV and Guillermo Del Toro's House of Horror Youtube series. Made in just over a week, from writing to edit, the film sits comfortably between that old Universal Monster movie vibe and the 80s Amblin productions, with a dry post-modern delivery which helps lens the phantasmagorical as more commonplace than we're used to. It's Fun that...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, July 24, 2014. Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" failed to get a big finale bump and also failed to help the network upset the normal Thursday order. "Big Brother" was still the night's top show in the key demographic, while a "Big Bang Theory" repeat still led the TV night overall. The night also saw very small audience bumps for all of NBC's originals, though "Hollywood Game Night," "Welcome to Sweden," "Working the Engels" and "Last Comic Standing." Also flat? Fox's impressively steady, if not impressively strong, "Gang Related." ABC's two-hour season [series?] finale for "Black Box" was up a little as it ended its run. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 1.4 rating for Thursday night, beating out Fox's 1.2 rating in the key demographic. NBC was third with a 1.0 key demo rating, followed by ABC's 0.8 key demo rating. The CW averaged only a 0.1 key demo rating...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, July 17, 2014. "Big Brother" and a repeat of "Big Bang Theory" were, again, Thursday's top shows, though a low repeat for "Elementary" and an up week for "Hell's Kitchen" knocked CBS into a tie among young viewers. The "Hell's Kitchen" bump helped Fox's "Gang Related" to slight growth, while ABC's "Rookie Blue" and NBC's "Hollywood Game Night" were also up in some measures. ABC's "Black Box" was down in the key demo and NBC's "Welcome to Sweden" and "Working the Engels" slipped in their second weeks. On to the numbers. Among adults 18-49, CBS and Fox both averaged a 1.3 rating for Thursday night, tops in the key demographic. NBC was third with a 0.9 key demo rating, followed by ABC's 0.8 key demo rating.
