Do you like the Stonecutters song? How about "See My Vest"? Were you impressed when Bart Simpson and Michael Jackson sang a birthday song to Lisa? How do you feel about the celebrity-laced barn-burner "We're Sending Out Love Down the Well"? Do you like the stage musicals of "Checking In," or "Stop the Planet of the Apes! I Want to Get Off!"? I'm personally fond of the song about Spirngfield's brothel, "Spring in Springfield," a throwback to bawdy farces of the 1930s. And who could forget when Lyle Lanley led the entire town in a musical number about a monorail? Or when Homer, Apu, Seymour Skinner, and Barney formed a barbershop quartet to perform "Baby on Board"?
Point being "The Simpsons" has featured many, many original songs in its 850-year tenure on television, and that doesn't even count the hit record "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" from 1990. Many of the...

Larry Wilmore says “finally.” Greg Grunberg says “Mazel tov! Writers Strike Deal!!!”
Bill Wolkoff promises not to picket Dancing with the Stars.
The Writers Guild has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end its strike after nearly five months, and needless to say — the members have thoughts, lots of happy thoughts. And it’s all spilling out on social media.
Here’s a roundup of their reactions so far:
Billy Ray: “To all my fellow writers— You earned this. You saved our profession. Now let’s continue to stand w the actors. And IATSE. And the Teamsters. And labor everywhere. That’s how we’ll save America.”
Wolkoff: “Day 146. It gives me great pleasure to say we will Not be picketing Dancing With The Stars tomorrow! I really can’t wait to watch the premiere on Tuesday, because we did it!

Helford is co-executive producing the potential series. Wilson is an executive producer along with Samie Falvey and Erik Feig for PictureStart, and Chris Mills and Chris Emerson for Authentic.

The network has ordered two comedy pilots – Sober Companion, a project that previously went to pilot starring Justin Long, and The Hug Machine, directed by Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone.
Sober Companion is exec produced by Jane The Virgin creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman.
The multi-camera comedy, which comes from CBS Studios, was originally set up at Fox in 2014 with Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. However, the project, which was originally written by Urman and David Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot stage and has now been retooled through a female lens.

Warning: obviously there are spoilers ahead for Hulu's Four Weddings and a Funeral!
It's all there in the title: someone's going to die when a show is called Four Weddings and a Funeral. Hulu's adaptation of the classic 1994 British rom-com spreads out its storylines over the course of 10 episodes, rather than a single two-hour movie, but the premise and format of the title remain the same. So who's the unlucky character in this iteration?
Four episodes in, we find out. The "funeral" in the title is for Quentin (Tom Mison), the perpetually drunk husband of posh ice queen Gemma (Zoe Boyle). Although none of the characters are exact replicas of those in the original film - in fact, it's surprisingly difficult to draw any sort of real character parallels between the original cast and this crew of characters - Quentin's death is definitely a shout-out to the storyline of the original.

If your biggest criticism of romantic comedies are that they end after a scant two hours, prepare to be charmed — hard — by Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The new series, from The Mindy Project‘s Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton, is very much in the spirit of the 1994 British movie from which it gets its name. But the characters and situations are different, and the action unfolds over a TV season (the first four episodes of which began streaming today). In a moment, we’ll want to know what you thought of the premiere episode, “Kash With a K.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the first seven episodes of Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”]
Rom-coms are dead, so they say. (And say.) The time-honored genre now threatens to become a never-ending obituary, but Mindy Kaling saw it differently: By subverting the cliches, she could turn Richard Curtis’ classic “Four Weddings and a Funeral” into a fresh and unexpected Hulu series.
Some things are familiar: Kash (Nikesh Patel) walks from the altar and finds himself at a crossroads. His father encourages him to explore an arranged marriage through the family’s mosque. So far, so prosaic: an arranged-marriage storyline, played for laughs.
However, these laughs don’t stem from a sense of “other-ing” the characters, a leering mean-spiritedness that can mar rom-coms. Kash’s burgeoning relationship is earnest, and organic — a key distinction for the trope-allergic young audiences whom streaming services attract.
Beyond the business motivations of adapting familiar IP, diversifying its cast and their storylines is a clever and strategic creative move.

What makes romantic comedies successful?
The outline of a meet-cute moment, a sudden realization that the potential couple cannot be together, a sweeping grand gesture, and a moving speech proving their love true while rendering the obstacle bunk generally delivers the goods.
The whole shebang also has to feel accessible to viewers even when it's otherwise far-fetched, and that's notably done through characters so well-written they appeal to a little piece of everyone.
Inserting yourself into the story is crucial; after all, what fun is it if you can't imagine yourself playing one of the parts?
Four Weddings and a Funeral comes from Mindy Kaling. You know her best for creating and starring in The Mindy Project. She knows her way around humor and romance.
Surely, appealing to a broader audience drove her adaptation of the classic film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, into a series with a diverse cast.

At the end of July, Hulu is dropping its new romantic comedy series Four Weddings and a Funeral, a modern-day update on the Oscar-nominated 1994 film starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. The show comes from the minds of Mindy Kaling, Matt Warburton (The Simpsons) and Tracey Wigfield (Great News) and stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Brandon Mychal Smith, Rebecca Rittenhouse, John Reynolds, Nikesh Patel, and Zoe Boyle.
The new series deftly tells the stories of a group of American friends living in London as they navigate the titular four weddings and a funeral - plus London social life, political scandals, upheavals at work, and a reality show called Love Chalet.
However, there has been some criticism of the fact that while the film had a same-sex couple at its heart, the show does not appear to have any such couple (or even any main characters who are homosexual), something that might seem...

In today’s TV landscape, the term “limited series” is a fluid concept (see Big Little Lies). That said, when Four Weddings and a Funeral co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling and showrunner Tracey Wigfield were asked at TCA if the Hulu adaptation of the beloved romantic comedy would follow suit with the popular HBO limited series and get a second season, they didn’t say yes…and they didn’t say no.
“Is that up to us?” Kaling said Friday, laughing, about the possibility of the series going beyond the “limited series” realm. “We’re still editing Episode 10!”
Wigfield chimed in saying that if the audience demanded it, a second season would be a possibility. Even so, she said they “wrote it as a complete story” that was a fulfilling 10-episode series. Whether it goes beyond that is up in the air. “Anything can be anything,” she said.

After many were ready to proclaim their untimely death, romantic comedies have resurrected with a vengeance. “Crazy Rich Asians” was a cultural and box office sensation, and Netflix has struck gold with a series of low-stakes movies that subsequently created an entire cottage industry that runs on earnest charm and flirty banter. Combine that burgeoning success with Hollywood’s beloved “everything old is new again” ethos and it was probably only a matter of time before we got something like Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” a shiny new adaptation of one of the most iconic romantic comedies of all time.

Hulu’s “Four Weddings and A Funeral” begins the exact same way as the 1994 film, with a madly panicked “Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” dash out of the house by someone who egregiously overslept.
But from that point forward, Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton’s show takes on a life of its own. The titular four weddings and a funeral will happen, of course, and there are plenty of homages to the rom-com classic sprinkled throughout the show, but the story that unfolds bears little resemblance to the Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell dorks-in-love Best Picture nominee.

Hulu previewed its revamped version of rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral with a breezy, snarky first trailer. Mindy Kaling and writer Matt Warburton (Community, The Mindy Project) co-wrote the pilot for the upcoming miniseries based on the 1994 film of the same name starring Hugh Grant.
The clip follows Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel), a political communications director from New York who flies to London for a friend’s wedding. There, she reconnects with three old friends and becomes entangled in their personal crises — from reignited love affairs to social and political scandals.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is coming to Hulu later this month, and it looks like a charming dramedy that is sure to be a hit.
The series is an anthology drama, with the first season spanning ten episodes.
Instead of the binge model adopted by various other Hulu originals, Four Weddings and a Funeral will unspool weekly from July 31.
It follows "four American friends — Maya, Craig, Ainsley, and Duffy — who reunite for a fabulous London wedding."
"But after a bombshell at the altar throws their lives into turmoil, they must weather a tumultuous year of romance and heartbreak."

"Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course, there are four weddings...and a funeral."
It is based on the 1994 movie of the same name.

George Lopez, Andie MacDowell and Alex MacNicoll have joined Frank Grillo in the modern day western “No Man’s Land,” sources tell Variety.

Mindy Kaling isn’t just hopeful that Hollywood is changing in the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up — the “Ocean’s 8” star says she’s already noticing a positive shift toward gender parity.
“I’ve seen an enormous amount of change,” Kaling told Variety at the Palisades Village opening gala in Los Angeles, adding, “I’m noticing that even in hiring, that before you used to have to convince people, ‘Hey, the crew need to be like 50% diverse in some way, or ‘The show needs to reflect diversity.’ It used to be convincing people, and now you don’t have to convince people. They know. I don’t know whether it’s fear of being shamed publicly or litigation, but whatever it is, it’s working.”
Kaling didn’t always think the change would come. “Even just transparency of wages, it’s like, whoa, it won’t happen in my daughter’s lifetime.

Kaling also has the upcoming “Four Weddings and a Funeral” project for Hulu through Universal Television, but there is no word yet on if Hulu will step in for “Champions” the way it did with Kaling’s previous network comedy “The Mindy Project.”
“Champions” centered on Vince, a washed up high school baseball star who reluctantly gave up his dreams to take over the family gym in Brooklyn. He lived with his sweet, naive younger brother, Matthew, and was on the verge of secretly selling the gym and moving to Florida when an old high school fling, unexpectedly dropped off their 15-year-old son, Michael.

NBC has made a final decision on Champions, opting not to renew the freshman comedy for a second season.
The call came down to the wire, with the options on the cast expiring this weekend. I hear there had been discussions with Netflix about picking up the series.
The streaming giant has international rights to Champions. I’d heard that the Netflix pact stemmed from the close relationship between Champions co-creator/co-star Mindy Kaling and Netflix’s Bela Bajaria, who shepherded Kaling’s The Mindy Project at Universal TV, and that the international rights deal helped seal Champions‘ series order in May 2017.
Netflix will continue to carry the show internationally — it debuted on the streaming platform June 12 — but I hear the Internet network has opted not to pick up Champions for next season. There are still discussions about the show’s future elsewhere though I hear the options on the cast are not being extended,...

Hulu has elevated Brittany Hveem to the role of head of business affairs, where she leads business affairs for all development and production deals related to originals and will manage all aspects of business affairs strategy, policy and procedure.
Hveem previously was business affairs director at Hulu, which she joined two years ago. She continues to report to Chadwick Ho, senior VP and general counsel.
Hulu’s previous head of business affairs, Philip Matthys, left the company late last year to join Apple’s Worldwide Video team in a similar role.
At Hulu, Hveem most recently oversaw efforts for original series orders including: “Looking for Alaska,” a drama series based on the bestselling John Green novel from Paramount Television and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire; “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” a limited series written and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton, inspired by the 1994 British romantic comedy film; “Ramy,...
