Exclusive: New York-based sales company Visit Films has sold Geoff McFetridge: Drawing A Life, which debuted at SXSW, and New York Film Festival title The Practice to Gravitas Ventures for North American distribution.

Gravitas Ventures will release both films in July on all platforms.

Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents is, to my mind, one of the best films of 2023, even if it does make him blush when I say so. He’s one of those people of unusual intelligence who still seems a little surprised when people notice it. The characters in the film are not quite as sharp, but are nonetheless interesting, and learn as they go along. There’s Morán (played by Daniel Eliás) who, rather than spend his whole life working, decides to rob the bank where he works, hide the money, turn himself in and spend a shorter period of time in prison; and there’s Román (Esteban Bigliardi), whom he chooses as his accomplice. It’s how things develop subsequently, however – and how the film explores the limited framework of the men’s thinking – that makes it so intriguing.

In 1972, an Uruguay rugby team takes off in two engine prop plane to fiy from Montevideo in Uruguay to Santiago, Chile. While over the Andes mountains in western Argentina, the inexperienced pilot reads his instruments wrong and hits a mountain ridge, shearing the wings and tail off. The fuselage with the passengers then slid down a glacier to rest in a snowy expanse in the middle of Andes nowhere. Of the 45 passengers and crew aboard, 12 died immediately and several others succumbed thereafter in the harsh conditions. It came down to 16 souls. They survived 60 days before two of them climbed a mountain to rescuers.

It’s a simple matter of numbers, Morán (Daniel Eliás) explains. He has worked out, to the hour, how long it will take him, working in his tedious job as a bank clerk, to earn enough to retire and actually start living with the freedom he longs for. He has also worked out how long he will spend in prison if he simply steals that amount of money and then immediately confesses. In numerical terns, prison looks like a much better deal. He is not, as he sees it, a greedy man. he only steals as much as he would otherwise expect to earn, plus enough to pay a colleague to hide it.

That colleague is Román (Esteban Bigliardi), who has no idea about the scheme until he finds himself in the middle of it. What, then, are his options? It might seem like a sweet deal to be offered good money.

Bayona adapts Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name to make something that’s close to the reality of the experiences endured by those aboard Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The aircraft was carrying 45 passengers and crew, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team, when it crashed in the Andes. Of those, only 16 would survive across an ordeal that lasted two months.

The crash itself is harrowingly portrayed at the start of the film, and with a minimum of buildup. The plane’s tail and wings are torn away on impact while the fuselage sails down the snowy mountainside like a sled. This ensemble absurdist comedy centring on a hapless Argentinian yoga instructor in Chile and his extended circle is appropriately loose-limbed in structure, although a little overstretched here and there.

Esteban Bigliardi plays Gustavo, whose yoga studio is just about the only full thing in his life. He’s already split up with his wife Vanesa (Manuela Oyarzun), a fellow yogi, although they’re still going through the motions of attending therapist appointments. Vanesa got to keep their apartment, where she now continues to teach much smaller classes, while Gustavo kept the studio but moved into brother-in-law and his wife’s fog bank of a flat - “He smokes and his wife is an idiot,” everyone tells him in just one of Martín Rejtman long-running scripted jokes.

Gustavo is aiming for samadhi - the state of “joyful calm” aimed for by the Ashtanga Yoga tradition - but while he is permanently in a state of calmness.

The Delinquents is the sort of pleasurable movie that never feels rushed, masterfully carrying a viewer along a variety of detours over its three-plus hour runtime. It is languid yet never inert. It deftly moves between genres including comedy, romance, and Western. A heist picture at its core, with that comes the expected tense moments—moments that never play as out of place within the pacing of the rest of the film. It’s a remarkable achievement from Argentine filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno.

The Un Certain Regard highlight begins with the two unexpected criminals at the center of this heist: Principled, unassuming Morán (Daniel Elías) has calculated the exact sum he would earn if he worked at this regional bank until retirement, multiplying that tally by two on an old school calculator. Heist movies tend to operate by a narrative rule of three: You show the preparation; you detail the execution, bit by painstaking bit; and you map out how the criminals and/or their crew get away with it, or don’t. The Delinquents, Argentine writer-director Rodrigo Moreno’s left-of-center contribution to the genre, dispenses with the first part entirely, and fast-forwards you right to second base. A bank manager named Morán (Daniel Elías) wakes up in the morning, gets dressed, and leisurely strolls through the streets of downtown Buenos Aires to work.

Writer-director Martín Rejtman’s La Práctica skillfully eases us into a world where yoga is a lifestyle and not just an exercise. This is a world that promises health for the health-conscious, an improvement of one’s life through strict scheduling discipline, and freedom from earthly troubles thanks to the influence of Hinduism that can still be felt in yoga’s practice. Pity, then, that Gustavo (Esteban Bigliardi), an Argentinian yoga instructor living in Chile, is no longer grounded in his connection to that practice, as his separation from his wife, Vanesa (Manuela Oyarzún), prompts a series of life changes that a Vinyasa pose can’t fix.

Ryan Kampe’s Visit Films has picked up worldwide sales excluding Argentina, Chile, Portugal and Germany to Argentine director Martín Rejtman’s The Practice (La Practica) ahead of its world premiere at San Sebastian (September 22-30).

The dark comedy will subsequently receive its North American premiere in the 61st New York Film Festival’s (NYFF) Main Slate on September 30.

The Spanish-language film stars Argentinian actors Daniel Elías (“The Snatch Thief”), Esteban Bigliardi (“The Summit”), Margarita Molfino (“The Accused”), and features Laura Paredes, Mariana Chaud (“La Flor”), Cecilia Rainero (“Trenque Lauquen”) and Germán De Silva (“Las Acacias”).

According to the film’s official synopsis: Bank employee Morán (Eliás) schemes to steal enough money to liberate himself from corporate monotony, then confesses and serves prison time while his co-worker hides the cash. Mubi has revealed the official US trailer for an acclaimed Argentinian film titled The Delinquents, originally Los Delincuentes in Spanish. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews, and it's set to open this fall across the world thanks to Mubi giving it a proper release. This slow burn heist film is about a couple of bankers in Argentina. Morán and Román are looking for freedom and adventure. One commits a robbery, discovering an alternative to his boring life, while the other hides money that doesn't belong to him. Their destiny as new criminals will bring them together. It's a story about how both having money and not having money can be a burden, and it's nearly impossible to escape from the shadow of money and find true freedom.

Few titles from this year’s Cannes were a bigger surprise than The Delinquents, a three-hour-plus Argentinian crime comedy with existentialist leanings. Word from the festival was largely outstanding, critics finding Rodrigo Moreno’s treatment of the heist subgenre entirely fresh when such seems impossible. In this surreal comedy, Buenos Aires bank employee Morán (Daniel Elías) dreams up a scheme to liberate himself from corporate monotony: he’ll steal enough money to support a modest retirement, then confess and serve prison time while his co-worker (Esteban Bigliardi) holds on to the cash. Soon under pressure by a company investigator, accomplice Román heads to a remote rural idyll to hide the funds. There, he encounters a mysterious woman (Margarita Molfino) who will transform his life forever.

The best capers are endowed with a professional gambler’s spirit of self-assured play, and this inherent mischievousness is both taken to logical extremes and given a less flashy treatment in Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents. The film constantly toys with its audience, deploying genre cues only to sidestep their expected payoffs and moral resolutions. Whether one interprets the routes that it takes as relatively frivolous fun or serious arthouse theme-making hardly affects the pleasure of watching it. That distinction is just one of many that are defied in a film that treats the very notion of identity like an easily foiled con man.

The Delinquents alternatingly dares the viewer to read it as a caper flick, a moral parable, a comedy of coincidences, and an existential probe. It probably lands closest to the latter, though in fine existential fashion, it also cautions against searching for too much weighty significance in its story.

The “Impossible” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” director helms Netflix film “Society of the Snow,” based on Pablo Vierci’s 2008 nonfiction book of the same name. Bayona co-wrote the script with Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego.

The movie starred Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, and Josh Hamilton. Now, J.A. Bayona, the director of The Impossible and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, brings us a new film based on the book Society of the Snow: The Definitive Account of the World’s Greatest Survival Story about the same events.

The 71st San Sebastian Film Festival runs September 22-30.

Robin Campillo’s Red Island and Cristi Puiu’s Mmxx are among the first titles to be selected in competition for this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival (September 22-30).

Campillo makes his first appearance competing at the festival with French-Belgium co-production Red Island about the French colonisation of Madagascar. The French director’s previous film Bpm (Beats Per Minute) screened in the festival’s Pearl strand in 2017 after winning the jury prize at Cannes earlier that year.

The San Sebastián Film Festival has revealed the Official Selection for its latest edition, which is due to unfold from September 22 — 30.

The festival, which is celebrating its 71st edition, will screen Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu’s latest film Mmxx in competition. The festival describes the pic as a story that captures the “wanderings of a bunch of errant souls stuck at the crossroads of history.”

Belgian filmmaker Joachim Lafosse returns to San Sebastian this year with his tenth full-length film, A Silence, a drama starring Emmanuelle Devos and Daniel Auteuil. In 2015, he won the fest’s Silver Shell for Best Director for The White Knights, and two of his films have screened in the Perlak sidebar: After Love (2016) and The Restless (2021).

American filmmaker Raven Jackson will enter Competition with her debut film, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt. The festival described the pic as “a lyrical exploration of the life of a woman in Mississippi.

Spain, China, Middle East among buyers for Rodrigo Moreno’s selection.

Magnolia International has reported ongoing robust trade on Cannes Un Certain Regard selection The Delinquents (Los Delincuentes) following the multi-territory Mubi deal and has licensed a raft of additional key territories.

Rights to Rodrigo Moreno’s film have gone in Spain (Filmin), Greece (Weirdwave), Taiwan (Filmware), China (Hugoeast), Middle East (Gulf), Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), Israel (New Cinema), and worldwide airlines rights (Anuvu), with other territories under negotiation.

Near the halfway point of The Delinquents, a funny, existential epic from Argentina, a banker dips into an arthouse cinema. Though almost all the seats are free he can’t decide which one to choose. What’s the point of all those options, the film asks, if you’re always left wanting more? In another moment the elder statesman of a prison yard explains that the only advantage a cellmate holds over those outside is having all the time in the world to think. (What’s the point of freedom itself if you’re a slave to the algorithm?) “There wasn’t more freedom,” another man explains, reminiscing about an objectively worse era in Argentinian history, “but you could smoke anywhere.”

One of the very best films from this year’s Un Certain Regard, The Delinquents, the seventh feature from Argentine director Rodrigo Moreno, is set in motion with a delicious bit of game theory.

Lost in the Night (Amat Escalante).The more familiar one becomes with Cannes, the less one comes to expect anything like aesthetic coherence from it. Even if one accepts its nominal (or self-proclaimed) status as the standard-setter for international arthouse cinema, there’s still a fair amount of variation within its vast program. Which is to say that while one can lament the general calcification of festival-circuit aesthetics, the arbitrary programming decisions of Thierry Frémaux, or the often perplexing set of awards handed out each year, there are always films worth seeking out. In 1982, the French critic Serge Daney remarked that Antonioni’s Identification of a Woman and Godard’s Passion were part of cinema’s “secret factory”: that is, films which wouldn’t receive awards, but from which future directors would draw inspiration in years to come. The challenge with each edition, of course, is to discover which films those are.

Most of us know the illicit rush of the sick day slyly pulled when you’re not really sick. The turning you ignore on your commute, but that one day, for no real reason, you take. Oh, that sudden, intoxicating sniff of freedom! It’s perhaps the closest thing that many of us get as adults to the ceaseless adventure we thought, as children, we’d be living. Argentinian writer-director Rodrigo Moreno’s delightful “The Delinquents” knows the feeling too. Over the course of its droll, meandering, indefinably strange three hours, it may well persuade you that the crazy thing is not to break from your normal routine. The crazy thing is to ever go back.

Filmmakers have long been attracted to the heist format for the high drama it can generate, but Moreno begins his movie with a bank robbery so banal it’s hard to believe that’s actually what is going on.

Mubi has acquired Rodrigo Moreno’s Cannes Un Certain Regard entry The Delinquents in an all-rights deal for North America, the UK, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, Italy, India and Benelux.

The global distributor and streaming service will release the Spanish-language comedy-drama theatrically in North America, the UK and other territories, with release plans and exclusive streaming dates expected to be announced soon. Magnolia International is representing worldwide rights to the film.

Rodrigo Moren’s “The Deliquents” has been scooped up by Mubi out of the Cannes Film Festival. The distributor has acquired the rights to the film in North America, UK, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, Italy, India, and Benelux and has plans for both a theatrical and streaming plan in the coming months.

According to the film’s official synopsis: Morán (Daniel Eliás) is a bank employee in Buenos Aires who dreams up a risky plan to liberate himself and his co-worker Román (Esteban Bigliardi) from the shackles of working life: Morán will steal enough cash from the bank to fund their retirement if Román hides the money for him after he confesses and serves prison time; in three years’ time, they’ll reunite, split the cash, and never have to work again.

Departing to the countryside to fulfill his side of the deal, the less adventurous Román finds himself transformed...
