With the popular Star Wars book series The High Republic coming to an end in the spring of 2025, fans are hungrier than ever for more stories. So it's a good thing Audible has released yet another original story -- this time set in the time of the golden age of the Jedi.
Star Wars The High Republic: Seeds of Starlight by George Mann and Lucasfilm Press, narrated by Todd Haberkorn, is set during The High Republic and takes place after the fall of Starlight Beacon on the familiar planet of Eiram. People have started mysteriously going missing, and it's up to the Jedi to figure out what's happening to them.
Of course, in true High Republic fashion, things are about to get a whole lot worse. Beneath the ocean where what remains of Starlight Beacon lies, something is about to emerge -- something that is totally not going to put...

In the build-up to the release of "Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths — Part Three," the most intriguing detail was learning "Crisis" would feature the late Kevin Conroy voicing Batman one last time, having recorded his lines before his passing in 2022. Sweetening the news, it was subsequently announced that Conroy would be acting against Mark Hamill as Joker, if only for a moment. Their shared cameo recreates the animation style of "Batman: The Animated Series" (down to Gotham City's red sky), the 1992 cartoon where Conroy and Hamill first played Batman and the Joker.
But when I went to watch the scene, feeling I owed Mr. Conroy a peek at his Batman final curtain, my eyebrow shot up. The Joker in the scene did not sound like Mark Hamill. The cadence was there, but not the vocal quality. But the film's credits insisted it was Hamill, so I shrugged and...

Rwby producer Rooster Teeth has confirmed that they had voice actor Vic Mignogna fired from his role as the character Qrow Branwen. This decision marks the first major action since the #KickVic Twitter campaign started earlier in the year. “Effective today, Vic Mignogna is no longer a part of the cast of Rwby and Rooster Teeth is ending all associations with Mignogna,” Rooster Teeth’s official website wrote. “This will not affect the creative content of Rwby.” The controversy started on January 16, 2019, when Dragon Ball Super: Broly actor (Mignogna plays the English dub role of Broly) premiered in the […]

I don’t know about you, but I keep forgetting to watch Star Trek: Discovery.
I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t wait for each episode of Star Trek Continues.
As I’m sure you know, CBS, through the complicated Hollywood system of it’s mine, it’s mine!, owns the television rights to Trek and in its infinite wisdom stupidity decided to launch Discovery on their streaming network. Which you have to pay for.
Star Trek Continues, a continuation of the five-year mission of the Constellation class starship USS Enterprise Ncc-1701, captained by James Tiberius Kirk, is a love-fast to the original series. It is available for free on YouTube and its own website.
Stc was co-produced by the non-profit charity Trek Continues, Inc., Dracogen, Far From Home LLC and Farragut Films, and was partially funded by Kickstarter, in an incredibly successful campaign of crowd sourcing.

Away from Hollywood’s stifling commercial limits, Fumiyo Kouno’s manga about a young bride in wartime Japan has no illusions regarding the human price of war. Young Suzu takes in a new family, endures the hardships of a militarized country and wartime privations, but nobody is ready for what’s coming. Sunao Katabuchi’s historical drama makes stunning use of animation.

Part one of the final episode for the Web’s finest fan-made series came out this week, and as usual, it does not disappoint. As Star Trek Continues warps to its conclusion, long-time Trek fans are treated to a wonderful trip back to the very beginning of the classic series.
The latest episode of Stc, “To Boldly Go” (a homage to the famous opening narrative to Classic Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation) is a fun trip into the Trek universe that pays homage to “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, the original 1966 pilot episode for Star Trek. (Okay, that was actually the second pilot, the first being “The Cage”, starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, but I digress.) It shows the fidelity and affection that the makers of this show have for the source material; which is why they chose to end their series that way Star Trek began.

The best fan-made web-series, Star Trek Continues, returns with a new episode. Like the original Star Trek show it’s based on, it doesn’t shy away from controversial issues. Does the latest episode “What Ships Are For” maintain the series’ quality?
“What Ships Are For” is the ninth of a planned 11 episodes of this excellent show, and it’s too bad it will be coming to an end soon because it’s far and away the finest fan-made web show in production. What makes it so good is its fidelity to the classic 1966-1969 Star Trek TV series, which worked as a metaphor for socio-cultural issues of the day. (Something missing from the recent Jj Abrams films). Star Trek Continues also dives into a hot-button issue by tacking the subject of refugees.

For fans of classic Star Trek who want to see quality stories done in the spirt of the original series, you have a treat this week. The consistently excellent web series Star Trek Continues has put out its eighth episode, “Still Treads the Shadow”, and as usual, it does not disappoint.
For those who’ve never seen the multi-award winning Star Trek Continues, don’t dismiss it as “just” a fan-made web show. That does the series an injustice. It’s more than that. As someone whose been a Star Trek fan for over 40 years, and grew up with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the original crew of the USS Enterprise, I never ceased to be amazed by how well this show captures the essence of the great show I adored in my childhood. It’s a terrific homage, made by people who love the original Star Trek.

“Embracing the Winds”, the seventh episode of the excellent fan-made webseries Star Trek Continues debuted recently and it continues the outstanding quality of the previous six episodes. With equal parts fan service, entertaining writing, good performances and nostalgia, "Embracing the Winds" delivers what fans of classic Star Trek want from their Trek.
Note to Jj Abrams…Watch this show! These guys get it. You don’t. This is what fans of Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969) expect when they see the name Star Trek. The fan-made, crowd funded Star Trek Continues is such a superb extension of the old show, it makes you wonder why Paramount doesn’t hire these folks to write the new films. They’re much better at it than whoever is writing those movies now.

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.
Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.

Scream of the Banshee is the second of two After Dark ‘Originals' released this summer, the other being the previously reviewed The Task. The difference with this film is that it is quite clearly co-produced by SyFy, which is not necessarily a bad thing - since they know how to make programmes and straight-to-television films look decent.
Going into this film having enjoyed The Task - despite its many, many flaws - I was hoping to get either something similar or, God forbid, a good, well-scripted and produced low-budget horror. What I got, unfortunately, was something similar. It is obviously a television movie (you can tell because the score ends at the same time as the scene...ready for an ad break) which doesn’t automatically make it crap – see Tommy Lee Wallace's novel-adaptation, It – but throw in the SyFy moniker and the bar suddenly lowers.

A group of college kids and their professor accidentally unleash an ancient monster that places a death curse on whoever hears it scream.
Scream of the Banshee provides an adequate amount of thrills, chills and suspense. It's competently directed. It's competently acted by everyone involved. It's got a competent array of special effects and makeup. It also happens to look slick and polished. It's a solid horror film in every respect. So what's there to complain about? Well, it never pushes the envelope far enough. It doesn't break out of the box so to speak. It has an interesting concept at its disposal. There was so much mythology or ideology that the film could have explored, but it goes in the more routine direction of teen slasher, but...

The new horror flick Scream of the Banshee has just been announced - will it give us an awesome female villain?
After Dark movies have not been known to be .. er... 'good'. But sometimes they're not bad. They've just announced a new film in their 2011 Originals lineup (meaning, they paid for it to be made instead of just buying it from the filmmaker already completed) movie Scream of the Banshee, and it has a solid team of semi-okay guys behind it like writer Anthony Ferrante (Boo) and Steven C. Miller (director of the profoundly overrated zombie movie Automaton Transfusion).
There's no trailer, no poster, and no images from the film out yet, but After Dark wanted to get the word out anyway. For some reason. You know, to cause 'buzz'. Or whatever. I probably would have waited till I at least had a poster, if I were them.

It would be a disgrace to all Seto Mermaids if you don’t read this review, because “Honor among thieves is honor under the Seas.” You will hear the main female lead, Sun Seto, say this signature line at least once per episode in Funimation’s new romantic comedy, My Bride Is A Mermaid.
The basic plot of the story is that Nagasumi (our hero) is saved from drowning by Sun Seto (the mermaid). However, Mermaid Law states that if a human sees a mermaid the mermaid (and/or the human) has to die. The solution to this problem is of course to have them get married!
Admittedly, from reading the plot summary, and just from the title of this series, one could assume that this was just another run of the mill harem show with a contrived plot that does not matter. While you would be right about it being a harem show,...

“A sound soul dwells within a sound mind, and a sound body…”
Or so Laura Bailey, the voice of Maka, tells us at the beginning of each episode of Soul Eater. While she doesn’t give us any details about the percentages of recommended daily allowances, we can tell you that Soul Eater, the latest hit series from Funimation, is 100% awesome.
If you’ve been to an anime convention in the last year or so, chances are you’ve already witnessed the phenomenon that is Soul Eater. Starting its tour of our shores as a manga serialized in Yen Press, the series went on to be collected into volumes, giving U.S. fans a taste of what the process is normally like in Japan as a title gains popularity. It exploded onto the con scene, with hundreds of cosplayers taking part in some of the biggest photo shoots I’ve ever seen.

I had seen Claymore on the shelf at my local entertainment store for a while, but I had avoided watching it until now, mostly because I feared it was going to fall into that whole “girl with sword” stereotype. Not that I have anything Against girls with swords; I am a Huge Motoko fanboy, so that should tell you where I stand on the matter. For me, it’s a question of sincerity.
There is a huge glut of shows out there that feature girls with big swords, girls with big guns, but really, these shows are more about girls with big — well, you can guess where I’m going with this. Not that Motoko isn’t sufficiently well endowed — dodges sword attack — but so many of these would-be “tough chick” heroines couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. They aren’t convincing. Having big boobies is Not a magical ability,...

Chicago – Hardcore movie lovers know the joy of finding a clever comedy or taut thriller that they had never even heard of before they went to the video store. What’s more exciting? Having your preview-determined opinions confirmed or finding something totally off the beaten path? It may not be perfect, but Russ Pond’s consistently interesting “Fissure” could be the hidden gem you’re looking for this weekend.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 Perhaps it’s because of my theatrical background, but I have a certain affinity for small-cast, one-set films like “Fissure”. Like a lot of indie movies, “Fissure” keeps it simple in both setting and cast with only a few speaking roles and generally one set.
Fissure was released on DVD on August 11th, 2009.

It’s no accident that you are reading this column. In life there is no such thing as coincidence. There is only… inevitability…
I won’t even try to hide my enthusiasm for this series. If you remember my column on collecting anime swag, you know I own two XXXHOLiC wall scrolls — one autographed by Colleen Clinkenbeard, the voice of Yuko herself, along with a clock (also autographed), and a Yuko lapel pin. I made my own Watanuki/Doumeki cosplay, and there is a stuffed black Mokona plush over the TV. In other words, I’m a fan, and so you can imagine my excitement when Funimation released the entire series of XXXHOLiC as a boxed set.
XXXHOLiC, (pronounced “Holic”; the x’s are silent), tells the story of a boy named Watanuki, who has the curse of being able to see spirits. Wherever he goes, they are drawn to him.
