Exclusive: Anonymous Content has closed a first-look deal with Theresa Park’s film and TV banner Per Capita Productions.

Park’s Per Capita Productions is focused an auteur-driven, independent films, primarily based on literary material.

Most recently, Park produced Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All starring Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Russell and Mark Rylance. The movie has been nominated for 2023 Independent Spirit Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance; received two acting nominations from the Gotham Awards; and won the Silver Lion at Venice for Best Director; and Best New Talent for Russell. Bones and All was financed by The Apartment Pictures (a Fremantle company) and produced by that studio’s Lorenzo Mieli as well.

Fables, by definition, provide a moral lesson, but that doesn’t mean the characters within each fanciful, fictitious story have to recognize the message themselves. A protagonist’s poor choices may lead to comeuppance, or their awakening may arrive too late. Their fate is meant to inform and instruct the reader, rather than simply make them feel safe and secure.

In other words, fables aren’t fairy tales, and “Roar” recognizes the difference. The eight-episode Apple TV series is adapted from Cecelia Ahern’s 2018 collection of shorts. A number of episodes — all fables — are steeped in relatable misfortune. The woman who solved her own murder doesn’t get her life back. The woman who disappeared doesn’t find a magic patch for racist blind spots. But in the hands of “Glow” creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, “Roar” imbues...

While once a male-dominated medium, TV is brimming with female-driven programming in 2022.

Women are getting the royal treatment with psychological perspectives not often available, especially with additional women behind the camera.

Airing on Apple TV , Roar is a new anthology series about women's empowerment from Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, who have previously showcased the female mind on shows like Nurse Jackie and the gone-too-soon Glow.

Given their previous work, basing a series on Cecelia Ahern's book of short stories with the same title makes perfect sense, and some moving episodes really make you think.

The stories study many issues women face today, including fear, shame, and guilt, with a literal, somewhat whimsical bent.

Whether boldly told or with a lighter approach, each chapter finds a woman sharing her empowerment or experience with womanhood.

Liz Flahive joined us on press day to share her thoughts on bringing these stories to the screen.

Roar is a collection of darkly comic, female-centered fables that share some spine-chilling DNA with The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror. In each of the eight standalone episodes, adapted by Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive (Glow) from Cecelia Ahern’s short story collection, a woman finds herself in a very weird situation. Take, for instance, Becky the ghost of a bizarrely slain young woman who guides law enforcement to clues in “The Woman Who Solved Her Own Murder.” “The most fun part of playing this character was delving into the different tactics she’s trying to use to get attention from these male detectives. She’s trying to use the ones she did in life,” Brie says. But flirting doesn’t work when you’re dead – and invisible. After all, when you’re beginning anew every episode, the odds that they’ll all be of equal interest, let alone quality, drop off.

But that hasn’t stopped great episodic series from being produced. “Room 104” stretched its horror conceit to exciting extremes. “High Maintenance” transported us to various New York venues with compassionate character portraits. “Little America” found distinctly charming avenues into American immigrants’ lives. Exclusive: Alcon Entertainment has acquired screenwriter Steven Karczynski’s psychological thriller Vent, bringing BAFTA Award winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) aboard to direct.

The film brought to the company by Head of Creative Carl Rogers the story of a paranoid young man who believes a kidnapping victim is tapping messages to him through his apartment building air vent. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will produce alongside Karczynski and David Prior.

“The vision behind Vent is unique and thrilling,” said Kosovo and Johnson, “and between Steven Karczynski’s incredible writing, and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s ability to bring such films to life, we are thrilled to be a part of bringing this story to screens.”

Apple TV has greenlit an anthology series from Flahive and Mensch that will feature an all-star cast, including Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever, and Alison Brie. The series, titled “Roar,” is based on Cecelia Ahern’s book of the same name, which featured a wide collection of stories about women overcoming all manner of obstacles. Per Variety, Apple has ordered eight half-hour episodes for the show. A specific release date for “Roar” is under wraps.

The show is the first project to come from Flahive and Mensch’s recently signed overall deal with Apple’s growing streaming service. “Glow” creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have signed a new overall deal with Apple, the company announced Tuesday.

The first project under the deal is an anthology series of “darkly comic feminist fables” starring Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever and Alison Brie. Titled “Roar,” the eight-episode series is based on a book of short stories by Cecelia Ahern.

Specific plot and character details have not been released, but Ahern’s book is described as an exploration of “the endless ways in which women blaze through adversity with wit, resourcefulness, and compassion.”

John R. Leonetti, the director of the horror film “Annabelle,” will next direct “Game of Thrones” star Oona Chaplin in a horror feature called “Lullaby,” Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove announced Thursday.

Rooted in folklore, “Lullaby” follows a new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.

Chaplin will star in the film based on a screenplay by Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell. “Lullaby” begins shooting in Toronto on March 24.

Alcon Entertainment has acquired the film rights to “Postscript,” a sequel to the 2003 romance novel “P.S. I Love You” that was adapted into a feature film in 2007 starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank, the company’s co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson announced Tuesday.

The follow-up novel from author Cecelia Ahern was published in the UK this past September via HarperCollins and is releasing in the Us on Tuesday via Grand Central Publishing.

Alcon produced the 2007 film directed by Richard Lagravenese and it will co-finance and co-produce “Postscript,” along with Black Label Media. Johnson and Kosove will serve as producers, as will Molly Smith and Trent and Thad Luckinbill for Black Label.

No cast has been set for the follow-up feature.

Alcon produced and financed the 2014 film adaptation of P.S. I Love You, which starred Hilary Swank as Holly, as well as Gerard Butler, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kathy Bates, and Lisa Kudrow. It followed the story of Holly and her husband Gerry (Butler), who are tragically torn apart when Gerry dies from a brain tumor. Busy Anonymous Content has struck its latest deal, teaming up with Theresa Park’s Per Capita Productions on Keys To The City, a TV series that the companies plan to turn into multiple local-language versions.

The project will be loosely based on Joel Kostman’s memoir Keys To The City: Tales Of A New York City Locksmith, about the experiences of a New York locksmith in the 1980’s.

Per Capita and Anonymous will develop and produce the property and intend to adapt it to London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, Jerusalem and New York.

Saying Goodbye to Yang is set in a world where robotic children are purchased as live-in-babysitters.
