Every vote counts! It’s a phrase we’ve all heard a million times, but how true is it really? In theory, it’s built on the idea that every vote counts. But in practice, not everyone participates. Kevin Costner, known for his iconic roles in Dances with Wolves and Field of Dreams, is no stranger to delivering powerful messages through film.
But in his 2008 comedy Swing Vote, Costner’s character, Ernest ‘Bud’ Johnson, is far from the idealistic hero. He’s a rough-around-the-edges, down-on-his-luck single dad who doesn’t care about politics—until his daughter sneaks into a polling station to cast his vote for him, ultimately making him the deciding factor in a tightly contested presidential election.

When Swing Vote was released in 2008, Costner’s words about the apathy of the rich toward voting reflected a broader reality.

A busy March box office slate continues this weekend with the release of three new films: Sony’s adaptation of the Valiant comic book series “Bloodshot,” Universal/Blumhouse’s provocative thriller “The Hunt” and Lionsgate’s faith-based “I Still Believe,” the studio’s first release under its new partnership with Jon and Andrew Erwin’s production label Kingdom Story Company.
Of those three, “I Still Believe” is the one picked by independent trackers to have the best opening weekend and one analysts tell TheWrap has an outside chance of taking the No. 1 spot from Pixar’s “Onward” if it overperforms. Estimates for the inspirational true story film are currently set around $15 million, with Lionsgate projecting a $10-12 million start. Screenings will begin early on IMAX starting Wednesday.
While it isn’t expected to be a major grosser for Lionsgate, “I Still Believe” is still an important release for the studio.

Fitz finds out about Mellie's affair with Andrew, and Adnan and Maya break into Pope & Associates in Scandal's "Mama Said Knock You Out."
In a Scandal first, the audience met President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) and Mellie’s (Bellamy Young) two oldest children, Karen (Madeline Carroll) and Jerry (Dylan Minnette), who are high school students. The kids are less than thrilled at the idea of having to sit through a family dinner, let alone a live on-air interview with the First Family. During their pre-interview prep with Liv (Kerry Washington), Jerry is silent and seems a little too interested in just how live the interview is (no time delays). Liv calls in Pope & Associates and tells them to drop everything for the next 24 hours: they’re looking into Jerry and Karen.

NBC has cast Minnie Driver as the female lead in their adaptation of "About A Boy," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Driver will play Fiona, the role originated by Toni Collette in the 2002 film of the same name. "New Girl's" David Walton will play Will, an immature bachelor who befriends a boy who moves in next door with his slightly crazy mom (Driver).
Fiona is described as an "eccentric and quirky mother who is attempting to find herself following a recent divorce. She's in a stage of 'vegan throwback hippie-ness' and still sad about the split when she and her son move next door to Will to San Francisco in the hopes that they can improve their lives."
The pilot is being scripted by Jason Katims, the man behind the critically acclaimed adaptations of "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood" for the network. According to THR, Katims wrote the role with Driver in mind.

As the years progress and his workload diminishes, director Rob Reiner has chosen to spend his time bringing what he calls “life-affirming material” to the big screen. Despite the surprising success of The Bucket List in 2007, however, such a decision carries smaller budgets, fewer screens, and less exposure while allowing more creative control on work appearing to possess a very personal hold. After the underrated coming-of-age story Flipped proved he had a bit of Princess Bride era storytelling prowess left, The Magic of Belle Isle shows message can trump lackluster material better-suited to made-for-tv territory if enough heart shines through. Reiner is fulfilling a newfound desire to expose how life doesn’t truly end until your last breath is taken and he’s unafraid to forgo wide releases and mass appeal to achieve it.

Emma Fuhrmann is no ordinary ten year-old. Modeling by the age of 18 months, she began acting as soon as she could read. She began her career in TV commercials and quickly progressed to roles in TV, short films, and feature films. She's now co-starring alongside Morgan Freeman in this summer's The Magic of Belle Isle (2012). The film, which also stars Virginia Madsen, Madeline Carroll, and Fred Willard, tells the story of a wheelchair bound author named Monte Wildhorn (Morgan Freeman), who has lost his will to create. He moves to a small town where he befriends single mom Mrs. O'Neil (Virginia Madsen) and her three kids - one of whom is Emma's character Finnegan. The family, and in particular Emma's character, reignite Monte's passion for writing. Emma has already received critical acclaim for her touching performance opposite Freeman, not the least of which comes from the film's director Rob Reiner.

"Most times, real life doesn't measure up to what's in our heads, but every now and then it comes pretty close." Magnolia has debuted the trailer via Apple for the latest charming Rob Reiner film The Magic of Belle Isle, starring Morgan Freeman as a famous Western novelist whose struggle with alcoholism has sapped his passion for writing, but he moves to a small rural town called Belle Isle and reignites his passion thanks to a woman, Virginia Madsen, and her three kids. The cast also includes Kenan Thompson, Madeline Carroll and Fred Willard. This looks as delightful as any old timer Morgan Freeman flick can. Watch the first official trailer for Rob Reiner's The Magic of Belle Isle, in high def from Apple: In an effort to tap into his original talent, a wheelchair-bound author (Morgan Freeman) moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother...

It’s a little disconcerting to know a new film from Rob Reiner is arriving and seems to be on nobody’s radar. Nonetheless, we’re excited to see another feature from the director and The Magic of Belle Isle looks to be another sweet, well-made drama. So many other films in this ilk are cloying and melodramatic, but he usually nails it (just see his terribly overlooked last film Flipped for an example of how he does it right).
Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a famous writer who is burdened by alcoholism in this drama. It looks like he mostly just sits in his wheelchair spouting out wisdom, which is something I wouldn’t mind watching the legendary actor do for about 90 minutes. Check out the trailer below via Apple for the film also starring Virginia Madsen, Fred Willard and Madeline Carroll.

Today we’ve got debut posters for two very different films that I both can’t wait to see. First up is the one-sheet for Rian Johnson‘s time-travel sci-fi film Looper. The trailer is hitting in just under a week (April 12th) and /Film has the exclusive look at this poster for the film starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as an younger version of Willis’ character), Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Garret Dillahunt and Piper Perabo.
Despite my insane anticipation for this movie, and the fact that so many others already loved it, I have to say this poster is somewhat terrible. The stale white background with the characters shoddily cut out and slapped on makes it look like it was crafted in about a half-hour. Nonetheless, I honestly can’t wait to see this trailer next week to get a better look at this film. Check...

The always affable Morgan Freeman is still a busy actor despite the fact that no one would hold it against him if he decided to retire. After all, the man is 75 and has one of the greatest career track records around. But if he wants to keep doing what he loves, no one is going to hold that against him, either. This summer he'll be seen in The Dark Knight Rises, but before then you can catch him in The Magic of Belle Isle, which finds him reteaming with The Bucket List director Rob Reiner, alongside Virginia Madsen, Madeline Carroll, Kenan Thompson, and Fred Willard. The great Magnolia Pictures will be releasing the film on VOD starting June 1st, before rolling the film out into theaters on July 6th. Check out the synopsis and poster premiere below. Though the full list of bonuses isn’t available, it promises and commentary track, and depending on who delivers, that may turn out as interesting as the feature itself. Mark your calendars.

Machine Gun Preacher
Stars: Gerard Butler, Michael Shannon, Michelle Monaghan, Madeline Carroll | Written by Jason Keller | Directed by Marc Forster
As you are probably and unfortunately aware, Machine Gun Preacher is not the tale of a man of god that takes to the mean streets of La armed to the teeth to deliver some righteous justice and stick it to the man. Along with Hobo with a Shotgun, it’s one of the best exploitation titles you could hope for. In real life, however, Machine Gun Preacher is the true story of Sam Childers, former hell-raising bad-boy, who, after the kind of epiphany only brought on by stabbing a homeless person half to death, turns to Jesus. After seeing the light, Sam begins working in Sudan, caring for the orphans of the war zone.

Previously titled Summer at Dog Dave’s then The Summer of Monte Wildhorn, Rob Reiner‘s latest drama finally has a confirmed title and acquisition to go along with it. It was announced today that The Magic of Belle Isle, starring Morgan Freeman, will arrive this summer on VOD and theaters thanks to Magnolia. As someone who adored his massively overlooked last film, Flipped, I can’t wait to see if Reiner still has some more magic up his sleeves.
The film, also starring Virginia Madsen, Fred Willard and Madeline Carroll, follows Freeman as Monte Wildhorn who is famous writer that is burdened by alcoholism. “He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in picturesque Belle Isle, and befriends the family next door including a single mother (Madsen) and her young daughters who help him find inspiration again.” Coming from Shadow and Act we also have the first look from the film above and below.

When he was not quietly terrifying Emma Stone over the internet this year saw Mr. Jim Carrey make a film about a man and a band of errant penguins, and as the film is out on DVD and Blu-ray this week we thought we’d celebrate with a clip culled from the film, positing that it might be just the thing for the cold winter nights.
Mean girls director Mark Waters directs both man and bird here and the human cast has Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll and the legendary Angela Lansbury. See, you’re interested now aren’t you?
Before the clip please apply the following synopsis to your synapses.
An adaptation of the beloved 1938 children’s book, which won the 1939 Newbery Award. Mr. Popper is a house painter whose dreams of Arctic exploration prompt him to write letters to real explorers. One of them sends him a penguin, which he keeps in the icebox.
