It’s What’s Inside filmmaker Greg Jardin spent eight years trying to land $10 million for a still-unproduced sci-fi comedy. In 2016, he then pivoted to a genre-bending idea that is now his feature directorial debut, spending another eight years trying to get it in front of a festival audience. That opportunity finally came at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, and within three days of It’s What’s Inside’s world premiere, Jardin and his producing team landed a $17 million acquisition deal from Netflix.
Jardin — who’s had a healthy career making shorts, music videos and promos for Netflix projects such as Wednesday and When They See Us — had modest expectations for his comedic sci-fi thriller leading up to Sundance. In fact, his only concern was that his $2.5 million film didn’t create a loss for his financing and producing partners at Such. While Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp seems to be making a headway in her career with the upcoming Robert Eggers horror film Nosferatu, the failure of The Idol still looms over her. The HBO show was canceled after five episodes, with many fans criticizing its themes and graphic depictions of s*x and n*dity.
However, the show seems to have received one feather in its cap as it recently earned the Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. The series centered around a troubled pop star who gets swayed by a cult leader. With the Emmy win, Lily-Rose Depp seems to have surpassed her father in the TV space.

Out of the 16 Emmy nominations Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” earned for its first season, five were for high-profile guest stars Michaela Coel, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Paul Dano and John Turturro.
The quintet, who make up half of this year’s drama guest acting nominees, were “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane’s first choices for their respective characters.
“That’s why it’s unbelievable that all these people said ‘Yes,'” she said. “One of the things we were excited about doing was taking these [actors] who played roles in a way that you would expect them to and then turn it on its head a little bit or even just to the left versus to the right.”

When you think of an "Alien" movie, you would be forgiven for thinking primarily of...well, you know, of the alien at the center of each story. But an iconic horror movie bad guy is just one piece of what has made the "Alien" franchise stand the test of time. With the arrival of an all-new entry, the so-called interquel "Alien: Romulus" from genre director Fede Álvarez, let us now consider the 10 best characters in the decade-spanning series.
Be warned, though, this article contains spoilers for "Alien: Romulus" after a certain point (we'll let you know when). Also, you might just be surprised at the top pick.

Francesca Sloane, writer and co-creator of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, worked with Donald Glover to reinterpret the 2005 film of the same name into a dark dramedy about two for-hire agents embroiled in a tumultuous fake marriage. Sloane selected this scene from episode six, “Couples Therapy (Naked & Afraid),” where John and Jane Smith (Glover and Maya Erskine) break into a scathing fight while on a spy mission in the woods, and tensions that have been simmering over the course of the season come to a head.

“It’s probably the most raw scene between them,” Francesca Sloane tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s definitely the moment where they get the ugliest with each other. It’s a breaking point.” The argument begins when Jane is noting that a bug, which has been attracted to the light of their campfire, has flown to its demise. “It...

To use VFX or not use VFX: that is the question, and one that each TV show has to answer differently. “Sweet Tooth,” the Netflix series set in a world where a virus has wiped out much of humanity and, maybe or maybe not coincidentally, human-animal hybrids are now born, has a tactile, cobbled-together ethos in its design choices. The show’s look doesn’t just illustrate the haphazard nature of scavenging for survival but also is in itself a kind of argument for everything that makes its young human-deer hybrid Gus (Christian Convery) a hero. Building too much of that world in a digital environment would flatten it and make it feel too slick.
Still, in the show’s final season showdown, the story needed to create some big setpieces that were beyond what could be done practically. How “Sweet Tooth” combined new-school and old-school techniques is a fantastic...

The world of “Star Wars” is expanding yet again. This week marks the debut of “The Acolyte,” an eight-episode drama that, like “Andor” before it, breathes new life into a world that is perhaps even more familiar than our own at times. The series, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Disney , is set 100 years before the rise of the Empire and tells an original story that is full of action and hints at more sinister forces at work in the universe.

In the opening moments of Sweet Tooth’s very first episode, a deadly pandemic spreads and a new species of human-animal hybrids emerges. Over the course of the series, the third and concluding season of which is now streaming on Netflix, a crumbling society searches for answers, including to one very big question: Which came first, the hybrids or the virus? In the penultimate episode of Season 3, that long-standing question is definitively answered — and its consequences shape the show’s explosive finale.

One of Netflix’s secret keys to success has been letting shows embrace their darkest elements. The overly managed shows that feel studio-noted to death always seem to fall flat. Yet Sweet Tooth has never really faced that problem. Very few shows can get away with the tone this comic-book adaptation cultivated in Season 1 or Season 2. Placing its story in the apocalypse and having an adult man protect a younger protagonist with special capabilities has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Last of Us. However, there’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

When Donald Glover was first approached about the possibility of remaking Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he wasn’t exactly enthused.
“I don’t really do remakes,” he told his buddy, an exec at New Regency, which produced the 2005 original starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married spies. Of course, he’d never actually seen the film, just the tabloid saga surrounding its stars, who’d later wed. In fact, Glover’s still convinced that was key to the project’s appeal. “When people are like, ‘I love this movie,’ I’m like, ‘What did you like?’ Not to say that the movie’s necessarily bad,” he says, “but I think it just had to do with the chemistry and what was happening between them.”
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine were photographed Jan. 29 at the Georgia Room in New York City.
Glover did eventually watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith, mostly out of curiosity.

As a followup to Atlanta and Swarm, Donald Glover adapting Doug Liman’s entertaining 2005 spy caper Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a television format is an unlikely choice. That said, there’s a certain timeliness to the premise of a married spy couple trying to survive missions and each other, ideally suited for every generation.
This iteration, created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a strictly millennial-geared update with a progressive heart and more romantic soul to round out its stealthy concept. Whereas this Glover and Maya Erskine-starring update likely won’t spur a pop culture impact as significant as the formerly-renowned Brangelina film did, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a sizably entertaining and meditative spy thriller fit for a millennial demographic.
Set in bustling NYC, two stranger spies, John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine), are interviewed for a potential spy gig by a mysterious agency they only speak to via texts.

Even by the standards of a Hollywood ecosystem where everything is IP, and IP is everything, the idea of adapting a TV show from Mr. & Mrs. Smith seemed odd. The 2005 action-comedy exists in the pop-culture memory less as a movie (though it’s excellent) than as the origin story of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s relationship. Remaking it without them would be like rebooting Top Gun without Tom Cruise,...

Dan Levy admitted that he was too “busy” to finish watching The Idol last summer, especially after one of his scenes was cut from the HBO show.
The actor played Benjamin, Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) publicist, in the controversial five-episode series, but his character appeared only in the first episode, and another scene never made it in the final cut of the show.
Now, more than six months after The Idol premiered in June, Levy made an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and was asked by Cohen on behalf of a fan: “Why were your scenes cut from The Idol, and what did you really think of the show?”
Though the Schitt’s Creek star seemed to be a bit taken aback by the question, he said in response after giving it some thought, “I think it was only one scene that was cut.

Sam Levinson is a controversial figure on HBO after a bevy of risqué content that’s featured in his two notable series, Euphoria and his recent collaboration with The Weeknd, The Idol. Both shows deal with intense sexual content, and productions for both have been a hotbed of rumors and claims of toxicity as some cast and crew have allegedly quit. Amy Seimetz was a director on The Idol before she left due to creative differences with Levinson. She alleged that the showrunner wanted to amp up the spicy material and really push the limits of premium television. One production member reportedly stated, “What I signed up for was a dark satire of fame and the fame model in the 21st century…It went from satire to the thing it was satirizing.”

In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.
Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.
The premise seems simple: Kate Lyn Sheil plays a woman named Amy who has just purchased a...

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is a supernatural horror film directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, she also co-wrote the film with Jeff Buhler. The Paramount film is a prequel to the 2019 film Pet Sematary, which was based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is set in 1969 and it revolves around Jud Crandall, who dreams of leaving his hometown but a dark family history will keep him from fulfilling his dream. Starring Jackson White in the lead role, the film has some great moments worthy of horror fans and if you also loved it here are some similar movies you could watch next.

There is one fundamental thing about every single Stephen King story. In able hands, all of them can be made into exciting cinema. Unfortunately, though, that is not the case with Lindsey Anderson Beer’s prequel of the 2023 horror film, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I am not exactly a fan of the 2019 version of King’s Pet Sematary, which was a rather generic adaptation that couldn’t quite do justice to the source material. It had reliable actors like Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Litngow, who all did their best, but the film didn’t quite have the punch that was needed. Making a prequel to that clearly doesn’t make any sense, at least to me, but the latest obsession with turning a classic horror novel into a dull, mediocre film is too hard to avoid for some people, I suppose. And truth be told, we only fuel this...
