There’s some undeniable wisdom in that Mark Twain quote about writing what you know, and that’s likely the reason why some of the best films of all time are about filmmaking itself. This also applies to the horror genre, as we can see from beloved classics like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and even The Blair Witch Project.
And in honor of recent meta horror flicks like MaXXXine and The Exorcism (not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist), we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating 6 underrated Hollywood Horror Films that explore the dark side of show business.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining ‘Hollywood Horror’ as scary movies where filmmaking itself is a source of scares. That being said, we’ll be avoiding Found Footage movies since most of them are already exercises in meta storytelling.

Bitch, you dead.
We closed out July with a look at Joshua Grannell’s 2010 campy horror comedy All About Evil, and kicked off July discussing the ins and outs of the photography industry in the American giallo Eyes of Laura Mars. Now we’re getting serious with a discussion on the afterlife and religion in queer director Alejandro Amenábar‘s The Others (which just had a Criterion Blu-Ray announcement).
The Others sees Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devoutly religious mother of Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), move her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, and while Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks on her, chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural may be occurring.

We spent July discussing gender in a myriad of ways: cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, as well as trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. To keep things in theme, we’re closing out the month with a look at Joshua Grannel‘s (aka drag queen Peaches Christ‘s) 2010 horror comedy All About Evil, which is currently streaming on Shudder!
All About Evil sees an unhinged theatre owner named Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) begin making snuff films and screening them at her decrepit San Francisco theater — presenting them as fictional works — in order to prevent the theater from going bankrupt. Unfortunately for Deborah, her biggest fan (Thomas Dekker) catches on to her scheme and tries to stop her before her antics get his mother (Cassandra Peterson) killed.

“As you all know as fans of Bruce [Campbell]’s, he is known for his incredibly wide range. He can play not only people who look like him, but people who look and act like him,” quipped Dana Gould, creator of Stan Against Evil and former The Simpsons writer/producer/voice actor. “Bruce is a Renaissance man, by which I mean he is incredibly old. But he is aging like a fine wine: largely out of the public view.”
Gould — who acted alongside the horror icon in Disney’s 1997 TV movie The Love Bug — served as the roastmaster for Sf Sketchfest’s Roast of Bruce Campbell. It’s been amazing to watch Don Mancini shepherd the entire Child’s Play franchise for nearly 30 years now, successfully navigating these films through various eras in modern horror, all while keeping the spirit of everyone’s favorite possessed killer doll Chucky very much alive and kicking.
This week, Cult of Chucky made its debut on various formats and platforms—Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and the rated version is also now available on Netflix—which meant it was the perfect time to post our interview with Mancini here on Daily Dead. Here’s the catch though: what follows ended up being a very spoiler-filled interview at times, just because there’s so much that I’ve long enjoyed about this franchise, and wanted to dig into a lot of different topics with Chucky’s creator while I had the opportunity.

Jayne Mansfield was an American actress, singer and entertainer who was one of Hollywood’s biggest sex symbols of the ‘50s and ‘60s. She was known for her hunger for publicity, her questionable affair with Anton Lavey, head of the Church of Satan, and her fatal car crash in 1967.
Now 50 years after her legendary accident, filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes have created “Mansfield 66/67,” a documentary about the last two years of Mansfield’s life and the speculation that her untimely death was caused by her alleged affair with Lavey and a curse that was placed on her.
The film is based on rumor and hearsay and asks the questions: “Was her life spinning out of control in the last two years of her life, or…did the devil make her do it?”

Alexander Skarsgard make quite an entrance at the San Francisco premiere of "Diary of a Teenage Girl" on Monday. The actor dressed in drag for his big night, posing for pictures on the red carpet in glitzy gold gown, 70's-style blonde wig and a flawless face of makeup. It is unclear why Alexander chose to change up his look for the premiere, but it may be an homage to his costar, Peaches Christ, a drag performer who plays a transvestite in the film and often performs at the Castro Theater where the event was held. In the movie, the "True Blood" alum plays Monroe, a 35-year-old man who is dating Chloe (Kristen Wiig) and later begins an affair with her 15-year-old daughter Minnie (Bel Powley). Skarsgard recently revealed that he was drawn to the role because it was "an interesting challenge -- to make a character that could have just...

Alexander Skarsgard, is that really you under there?
The True Blood star was unrecognisable as he arrived in full drag to the premiere of his new movie The Diary of a Teenage Girl in San Francisco last night (August 4).
The actor was giving it Farrah Fawcett glamour in a blonde feathered wig, which he teamed with a floor-length gold gown.
It's believed Skarsgard - who is reportedly dating Alexa Chung - was paying tribute to co-star and drag performer Joshua Grannell, who plays a transvestite in Marielle Heller's controversial movie.
The film adapts Phoebe Gloeckner's graphic novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures, and centres around a young artist (Bel Powley) living in San Francisco in the '70s, who is having an affair with her mother's boyfriend.

The film adapts Phoebe Gloeckner's graphic novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures, and centres around a young artist (Bel Powley) living in San Francisco in the '70s, who is having an affair with her mother's boyfriend.
Skarsgard plays Monroe, the 35-year-old boyfriend having the affair unbeknown to his girlfriend...

Alexander Skarsgård made his most memorable red carpet appearance to date last night when he dressed in drag and posed for photographers at the Diary of a Teenage Girl premiere in San Francisco. Skarsgård gave serious Farrah Fawcett vibes with his feathered wig, and he wore a floor-length gold dress that was cinched at the waist. He posed with Bel Bowley and director Marielle Heller. It's unclear why Skarsgård decided to dress in drag, but it's suspected his look may have been a nod to his co-star Joshua Grannell, a drag performer named Peaches Christ who plays a transvestite in the film. Skarsgård, who stands tall at 6-foot-4, previously played a transvestite in the 2006 Swedish film Kill Your...

Alexander Skarsgård is one of Hollywood's hottest men -- and it seems he's one of the hottest women, too.
The actor dressed in drag for the premiere of his new movie, "Diary of a Teenage Girl," last night in San Francisco. He donned a feathered blond wig and strutted down the red carpet in a glittery gold dress and silver sandals. The look was very '70s, which is when the movie is set.
It's unclear why Skarsgård dressed as a woman for the premiere, as he doesn't play a drag queen in the movie. Perhaps it was a nod to co-star Joshua Grannell, a drag performer who goes by the name Peaches Chris, who does. Here's a better look. The coming-of-age movie centers on Minnie (Bel Powley), a San Francisco teen who embarks on a journey of sexual evolution after losing her virginity to her mother's boyfriend (Skarsgard). Kristen Wiig stars as Minnie's mom.

We all know that dark horror comedies can be brilliantly done. Take the 2 sequels of Evil Dead, Dead-Alive and Shaun of the Dead just to name a few. But for every gem you also get a dud and too often that's what happens when you try to merge the fine line of laughter and blood curdling horror. All Things Evil attempts just that and so far so good!...
Judging from the first batch of stills we just got from the upcoming film 'All About Evil' we think this film is on the right track.

Horror comedies. When they work they're sometimes brilliant, when they don't, man, do they don't! So how will the upcoming All About Evil fare? From the looks of the new stills ... bloody good!

I first became aware of Joshua Grannell and his alter ego, Peaches Christ, on a trip to San Francisco in 2000, maybe 2001? I was dating a guy who had moved down from Sf to Los Angeles, and on one of our many trips up north we took in a screening of Showgirls at the Midnight Mass summer film series. Peaches was the host of the evening, and the show opened with a re-enactment of both the “Goddess” number and the “Nomi F-s Zack in the pool” scene with drag queens (and one drag king playing “Zack.”) I was hooked.
Over the years I would try and catch Midnight Mass screenings whenever I was up in Sf. I found out that Peaches was actually Grannell who was actually a manager at the Bridge, the theater in which the madness took place. Grannell programmed the series, and created unique pre-shows with his drag...

First-time feature filmmaker Joshua Grannell sent along the second teaser poster for his fright feature All About Evil (the first can be seen here). This piece of art, which you can see below, features sisters/actresses Jade and Nikita Ramsey, who play Vera and Veda, described by Grannell as “killer twins who were institutionalized earlier in life after murdering their family at 7 years of age. They are silent but deadly and were born knowing all about evil.”
The film tells the story of an introverted librarian (played by Natasha Lyonne) who inherits her late father’s decomposing movie house. In order to get business moving, she churns out a series of gory shorts, in which the gore and murders are all too real. The film co-stars Thomas Dekker (of From Within and the Nightmare On Elm Street remake, among others), Cassandra Peterson a.k.a. Elvira, Deadgirl’s Noah Segan...

The spirit of Christ compelled me to attend opening night weekend of the 12th edition of Midnight Mass. I’m speaking of the spirit of Peaches Christ, of course, who scored a sold-out crowd for her Saturday midnight screening of The Exorcist, preceded by a dazzling pre-show number “Peaches Will Funk You” (with such provocative lyrics as: “I don’t care if your mother sucks cock as long as you line up around the block”) and enough Regan look-alikes both on stage and in the audience to make your head spin. Idol Worship racked one up for the eternal battle between good and evil by hosting the iconic Linda Blair, who—in conversation with Peaches—revealed some sweet anecdotes about filming The Exorcist.

Joshua Grannell (aka Peaches Christ) and I met up at the Duboce Park Café the Monday after Pride Weekend. As Peaches, Joshua had survived his Pilsner pork pull; an event he agreed to in support of his beloved Blt community. “Every year,” Joshua admitted, “Peaches seems to do less and less [at Pride] in an attempt to reserve energy for the next eight weeks [of Midnight Mass].” Being that it’s now official that this is the last year of Midnight Mass at the Bridge Theatre (“Peaches Christ: R.I.P.”), I felt it compulsory to find out what’s up. Although our conversation was primarily to serve my upcoming Fangoria article on Joshua’s recently completed first feature All About Evil (I’ll let you know when that hits the newsstands), I took time to probe about the summer swan song of the 12th season of Midnight Mass.

Joshua Grannell, the man best known for his persona as Midnight Movie drag queen/hostess Peaches Christ in the San Francisco film scene, is making his own movie. Anyone in Sf who frequents late night movies has encountered Grannell's series, which features midnight screenings of camp classics and eighties hororr movies. Now, production has kicked into high-horror gear as Grannell is shooting his first feature film "All About Evil" in March. Grannell has written the Evil script and is directing the dark comedy, set in San Francisco. "All About Evil" centers around a mousy librarian, who has inherited her father's beloved but failing old movie house. There were two questions I purposely avoided asking Bruce Campbell: the first was the status—if any—of Evil Dead 4; a question which Bruce indicated in his Ain’t It Cool News interview as the one question “guaranteed” to be asked in nearly every Q&A on his two-month 22-city My Name Is Bruce (”Mnib”) tour. The second was why he was replaced by Ron Perlman to play Elvis in the Bubba-ho-Tep sequel; a question again answered in the AICN interview.
