Michael Helenek is a Los Angeles based cinematographer and gaffer. The films he has photographed have won awards, notably King Eternal (Dir. Christiano Dias), which was selected at ten festivals and won awards at five. The cinematography of his second collaboration with Director Dias, Monster In A House, was recognized by critics, acknowledged by American Cinematographer Magazine (July 2016), and awarded Best Cinematography at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. His most recent filmmaking collaboration with Director Michael Krehan, Rite of Passage, will be released in 2020.
Michael grew up in Allendale, NJ where he studied painting, drawing, and photography as a child. He earned his B.S. in Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University where he focused his studies on cinematography, working on over thirty 16mm student film productions in the lighting and camera departments. Since college he has worked for PBS and for National Geographic, where he camera operated on the series TV show "DogTown". In 2005, he traveled to Bolivia to photograph a historical documentary titled, Centro Medico Humberto Parra. Michael has additionally worked as a commercial gaffer for clients such as Gatorade, American Express, Intuit, NBC, and Toyota.
