Britney Spears‘ “Hold It Against Me” was initially intended for Katy Perry. The tune would have worked better in Perry’s hands for several reasons. Spears doesn’t ruin the song, but she sings it like she doesn’t understand the tone of its lyrics.
Katy Perry would have understood the humor of Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’
Dr. Luke was behind Spears’ big comeback in 2011. During an interview that year with Rolling Stone, Dr. Luke revealed “Hold It Against Me” was intended for Perry. However, he decided it didn’t sound like Perry’s records. On one level, he was right. The tune is much more abrasive and experimental than Perry’s hits.
On another level, it’s very similar to Perry’s hits. Since “I Kissed a Girl” came out in 2008, there’s been a humorous burlesque element to Perry’s music. Stereogum reports that “Hold It...

“Teenage Dream” is arguably Katy Perry‘s signature song. One of the writers did not want to hand the track over to the “Dark Horse” singer, but she had to because she was in a desperate situation. The songwriter revealed why she felt so connected to “Teenage Dream.”
Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ is connected to Britney Spears and Taio Cruz hits
Bonnie McKee is a professional songwriter who gave us Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” She also co-wrote about half of Perry’s hits, including “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls,” “Roar,” “Wide Awake,” “Birthday,” and “Part of Me.” During a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McKee discussed the progression of her career. “It kept going up step by step by step where the names kept getting bigger and the sessions started getting more real,” she said.
McKee was asked which of her songs made her the most proud.

Groucho Marx was far from a sexy pop star, yet he inspired a Britney Spears song. That fact only makes the song weirder than it is on the surface. On top of that, another pop star wore a sexy dress that inspired the tune in question.
Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ is based on a Groucho Marx joke
In addition to being a movie star, Marx also hosted a show called You Bet Your Life. Stereogum reports he loved to use the suggestive line “If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?” on the show. Eventually, a variation of that joke became the center of Spears’ hit “Hold It Against Me.” In her version, the pickup line is, “If I said I want your body now, would you hold it against me?”
That lyric is beyond corny, but Spears delivers it just as seriously as her other songs.

Bonnie McKee is back with a new song!
The Diamond-certified hitmaker just dropped her latest song “Jenny’s Got a Boyfriend,” out now.
“‘Jenny’s Got A Boyfriend’ was inspired by a friend’s boyfriend who was a terrible flirt. He was always giving me and all the other girls the wrong idea!” she explains.
“I always wanted to write a song with a person’s name in the title, and when I was listening to some classics, I rediscovered ‘Jesse’s Girl’ and realized I was having the same experience- but I’d never heard the angle of lusting after someone else’s partner through the female lens. ‘Jgabf’ is kind of like ‘Jolene’ in reverse, if Dolly’s man were a flirtatious playboy (which maybe he was!)”
Keep reading to find out more…
The accompanying Boogie Nights-influenced music video was co-directed by Bonnie herself, who also self-produced the visual.

It may surprise most music fans to hear a songwriter whose credits include seven multi-platinum singles say there isn’t much money to make for their work anymore. But to the fellow songwriters who’ve spent years asking why their revenues have dried up in the streaming era, such a claim is yet another affirmation for how difficult it’s become to enjoy a sustainable career.

Kelly Clarkson fans, rejoice: despite having released the album, Piece by Piece, in 2015, the singer says that she’s in the studio working on new material for a new record. It might seem far away, but it could be arriving sooner than you think.
Talking with People, Clarkson says that she expects the lead single to debut in April while the album comes out in June. As far as sound goes, fans can look forward to her “favorite thing” she’s ever done as the new tunes take the route of “soulful urban pop” as opposed to her regular “rock pop.” Either way, the only album she’s ever released in June was 2007’s My December, and considering that’s one of her strongest, it’s not far fetched to believe that the best may be yet to come.

After a summer of getting sticky sweet with Quest Nutrition and penning a song in ode to their blueberry muffin protein bars, Bonnie McKee is getting back on track with music that doesn’t partner with a corporation. Dropping videos for each song off her 2015 Ep, Bombastic, McKee has now revealed the latest clip for her song “Easy.”
“Easy” is already one of the best tracks that Bombastic has to offer, and the music video helps its case even more. The slow-moving pop ballad is accompanied by a dreamy aesthetic that is chock full of cotton candy colors with 80’s style effects. In a world where short films seem to dominate the music video scene, it’s nice to see one that dials it back a bit and stars only the artist for a minimalistic clip that still manages to stand tall on its own.
Despite McKee’s success with her music videos,...

In a world where short films seem to dominate the music video scene, it’s nice to see one that dials it back a bit and stars only the artist for a minimalistic clip that still manages to stand tall on its own.
Despite McKee’s success with her music videos,...

Who would’ve thought that Chance The Rapper and Kit Kat would drop the hottest track of 2016? Okay, maybe it’s not that good, but Chance’s new commercial for Kit Kat where he remixes the classic jingle is still pretty darn charming to say the least.
In the thirty second clip, the rapper is seen in a convenience store celebrating Halloween in a bear costume, when a Kit Kat bar with his face on the wrapper sings him the well-known catchy tune. Get it? Rapper? Wrapper? Yeah, it’s weird, but then again, what would you expect when you hear that Chance The Rapper and Kit Kat collaborated?
According to Billboard, the commercial marks the first time in 20 years where the jingle’s lyrics have been featured in an ad campaign, and Chance is the first celebrity to revamp the song in general. This wouldn’t be the first...

When Bonnie McKee isn’t busy writing hits for other artists, she’s hitting the studio and crafting her own. Responsible for writing songs like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream,” McKee takes a similar pop route with her solo material. Though she hasn’t released an actual album in over ten years, she dropped an Ep last year and made noise with the single, “American Girl.” Her new song, “Stud Muffin,” is a pitch perfect bop — but it’s just a little bit unconventional.
“Stud Muffin” doesn’t try to hide the fact that it’s a full on promotion for Quest Nutrition’s newest blueberry muffin protein bar flavor. The song includes lyrics that name drop Quest bars, the music video features Quest bars, and the clip is even hosted on Quest’s YouTube page. It’s all so unbelievably corny, but something about how campy...

Vicetone are definitely starting to heat up this festival season. The Dutch DJ/producer Duo brought some disco flavor with their reimagining of Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” last month, and now their remix of Bonnie McKee’s “I Want It All” incorporates samples from the original into a unique progressive house framework.
Where in the source material, McKee’s vocals are accompanied by reverb-heavy guitar riffs, Vicetone’s version builds up to a bouncing groove with serene synth melodies. The drop itself isn’t the 20-megaton nuke that has become the main stage stereotype, but in the case of this track, it actually works better without it.
So far, Vicetone‘s remix of Bonnie McKee’s “I Want It All” is their second release since the Aurora Ep – each of which are spaced apart by about a month. At this rate, we can expect more new music from the duo sometime in July,...

Katy Perry's friend and co-writer on many of her hit songs, Bonnie McKee, says Perry's new love Orlando Bloom is an upgrade from ex John Mayer. "I would say so," McKee told reporters with a wink at the Musicares Tribute to Lionel Richie Saturday night, when asked if she thought he was an "upgrade" from Mayer. "But you didn't hear that from me," she added, giggling. McKee didn't admit that the two are officially an item, but gave her approval of the potential pairing, and added that they would certainly look good on each other's arms. "What an attractive couple that would be,...

After eight years of going hard at the Grammy Awards, Katy Perry is switching things up this year. Though she plans to spend music's biggest night "in my pajamas, eating matzo ball soup" with "Vicks cream on" instead of a full face of makeup, the "Firework" singer is hosting one of the weekend's most exclusive parties, according to a new interview with The New York Times. "It's a mixture of new and familiar artists, a combination of the past two years' Grammy nominees and also [acts] from the Spotify Discover playlist," she says about her bash, which she's partnering with the streaming service to throw.

Funny Or Die and Bonnie McKee dropped a brilliant parody of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” theme song on Friday, the morning after the NFL kicked off its regular season. As one might expect, the spoof started out as an earnest pro football tribute before predictably heading right towards the many scandals that plague the league. Here are some of the best lines: “Hey Jack, it’s a fact/the science is in/But let’s talk Peyton/not concussions.” And: “Yeah Deflategate is still a thing/Now let’s eat Meat Lover’s Pizza and some chicken wings.” Plus:...

Music industry heavyweights weighed in this week to say that the "Blurred Lines" ruling against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams hit all the wrong notes. On Tuesday, a California judge ruled that the duo stole from Marvin Gaye's 1977 song "Got to Give It Up" in creating their ubiquitous 2013 hit, and must pay $7.3 million to the late singer's estate. Williams quickly spoke out against the verdict, making a statement through his rep that while he respects the judicial process, the ruling "sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward." We all know that Wolverine loves to sing and dance when he's not busy hogging all the spotlight in the X-Men movies, and now there's word that his next opportunity to prance around with a magical tune or two is coming together. While it's taken some time to get all of the pieces in place, Hugh Jackman's turn as P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman on Earth looks to be heading into production next summer.
The film will tell the tale of how legendary promoter Barnum, essentially, invented show business with his three-ring circus. The film will be the first movie musical not adapted from a stage show since 2001's Moulin Rouge. It'll feature original songs by Justin Paul, Benj Pasek, Bonnie McKee, Jake Shear and Brian Lapin, work off of a script from Bill Condon, Jenny Bicks and Jordan Roberts, and be directed by Michael Gracie.

A major studio has not produced an original live-action movie musical since 1992's Newsies, starring little kid Christian Bale. I am talking wholly original, here. Moulin Rouge! in 2001 counts in that it was original story, but it only featured one and a half original songs. Therefore, it does not fit the criteria. Well, Fox is taking a chance on The Greatest Showman on Earth centered on P.T. Barnum, legendary co-creator of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman, who is now getting pretty good reviews on Broadway in Jez Butterworth's The River (though, the play itself is being met with a bit harsher criticism), is set to play Barnum in the film, which plans to start production in New York next summer. Bill Condon penned the latest draft of the screenplay. Michael Gracey, a former animator who has lined up a few projects to direct but has not started them yet,...

It's been over five years since we've heard anything on the development of the musical The Greatest Showman on Earth, the story of the famous three-ring circus creator P.T. Barnum. Last we heard, Hugh Jackman was slated to star in the film, and now Deadline reports the project is finally coming together with a plan to start shooting next summer in New York. This will be the first live-action, original big screen studio musical since The Goonies (though some argue you could count Moulin Rouge), and the most recent script comes from Bill Condon, writer and director of Dreamgirls. But who is directing? Michael Gracie, known for commercials full of dancing and a giant flash mob put together by Oprah Winfrey and the Black Eyed Peas (watch it here), will make his feature directorial debut on the film that has original songs by Justin Paul & Benz Pasek (of the Tony-nominated...

Hugh Jackman can sing, but on the big screen he hasn't really had the chance to show off his pipes. But that's not for lack of trying. Since at least 2009, he's been trying to mount the P.T. Barnum musical "The Greatest Showman On Earth," and though it has moved in fits and starts, now it looks like it's finally happening. Deadline reports that the film—the first original Hollywood musical since "Newsies"—will finally start shooting next summer in New York City. The Fox production (the studio likely thanking Jackman for his 'X-Men' efforts by getting this one going) has commercial director Michael Gracey lined up to get behind the camera, with a script from Bill Condon ("Gods And Monsters," "Chicago"), and songs by the Tony-nominated Justin Paul & Benz Pasek, Bonnie McKee, Jake Shear, and Brian Lapin. Basically, it's all top shelf talent. As for the story, it was previously...

The last few months have boasted a fair amount of impressive album releases from various artists populating the Edm scene. From up-and-coming sensation Porter Robinson’s spellbinding debut Worlds, and deadmau5’s epic While (1<2), some of the most lauded names in the industry are peppering store shelves and iTunes carts with fresh new releases. Today, another of EDMs heavy-hitters joins the party, as raft-riding and cake-tossing DJ Steve Aoki’s sophomore studio album, Neon Future, sees its release.
It’s tough to build flow in an album when there are only 10 songs, but when you factor in that Neon Future, Aoki’s second foray into the more commercial studio album game, features an ambitious intro and outro track (cutting the total track length to a paltry eight), the task becomes that much more difficult. Unfortunately, the DJ’s sophomore effort falls short in its aspiration to resemble an album, instead...
