Principal photography is underway in Chile on Prime Video Original ‘The House of the Spirits,’ an 8-part series based on Chilean author Isabel Allende’s career-launching novel. Allende, Eva Longoria and her Hyphenate Media Group are executive producing the show.

The project had been in development at lead producer FilmNation Entertainment, which brought in Chilean filmmaking team Francisca Alegria and Fernanda Urrejola (“The Cow Who Sang a Song into the Future”) to write and also showrun the series alongside seasoned local director/producer Andres Wood whose extensive credits include “Machuca” and series “News of a Kidnapping” and “Los 80.” Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain’s Fabula is providing production services.

As You Can’t Run Forever opens, a motorcyclist pulls into a gas station where a large man is yelling at a small dog. Instead of filling his tank, the cyclist walks over, draws a gun and shoots the man. Then he starts shooting anyone else he sees. This is Wade, he’s left several bodies behind him already, and he’s looking to add to his tally.

Miranda (Isabelle Anaya; Donny’s Bar Mitzvah) is a troubled young woman. She’s still resentful over her parent’s divorce and the subsequent suicide of her father. The fact that her mother Jenny and her stepfather Eddie are about to have a child of their own. Eddie’s daughter Emily is one already one sibling too many.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons made his career on television, appearing in Law & Order and Oz, and while he did play J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007), it wasn’t until Juno (2007) that he became a brand name, later appearing in Burn After Reading (2008), La La Land (2016), Justice League (2017), Being the Ricardos (2021), and other films. But, it was 2014’s Whiplash that earned him his first Oscar and earned him unanimous praise for his portrayal of the sadistic music instructor Terence Fletcher.

But, having said all of this, J.K. Simmons has a new movie coming out on May 17, 2024, an action thriller in which he will play the main role, but which is personal for him on more than one level, but more on that below.

The Academy Award winner leads action film “You Can’t Run Forever,” which is directed by his wife Michelle Schumacher, who co-wrote the script with Carolyn Carpenter. Schumacher and Simmons previously collaborated on feature film “I’m Not Here.”

“You Can’t Run Forever” follows Miranda, a young woman suffering from acute anxiety due to a past tragedy. Well, Miranda faces a new terror when a serial killer (Simmons) chooses her as his new target, the logline reads. “In a harrowing hunt through the woods, Miranda finds strength she never knew she had as she tries to elude her murderous tracker.”

Actor Josh Lucas, has called his latest sci-fi-thriller film, ‘The Black Demon’ a classic shark adventure, which has the essence of family at its core. Elaborating on this point, the actor said, “’The Black Demon’ is a classic action-adventure shark story. And without a doubt, one of the things I think that makes it special is that it’s got a family, a young family at its core.

“So hopefully, it’s a movie that kids love. It’s a movie that hopefully parents will love. I partly made this movie because I have a nine-year-old boy who loves these kinds of movies.”

The film follows the family of Paul Sturges (Josh Lucas) and his family who get stranded on an oil rig, which harbours the vengeance of a very angry Megalodon. The creature is believed to be a herald of an ancient Aztec god and kills the greedy.

Chile’s Francisca Alegria, whose debut feature “The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future” premiered at Sundance 2022, is launching a Latinx production company called Madre, with offices based in Chile, Uruguay and the U.S.

Together with her partners Fernanda Urrejola, Gabriela Rosés and Cristóbal Güell, Alegria said: “We firmly believe that stories have the ability to shape perspectives, challenge norms, and inspire action. With this in mind, we strive to select projects that not only entertain but also provoke thought and spark meaningful conversations.”

After the trainwreck that was Cocaine Shark and with the spectre of Jurassic Shark 3: Seavenge looming over me, The Black Demon, or any other shark film for that matter, may not have been an obvious choice. But this one caught my attention when it was announced and the idea of a finned fear film with enough of a budget to give it some bite was hard to say no to.

Paul Sturges is the safety officer for Nixon Oil, a corporate name that does not exactly inspire confidence. He has been sent to Baja to inspect one of the company’s rigs and has brought his family along. He may have to work but his wife Ines, daughter, Audrey, and son Tommy can have a vacation.

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has acquired UK & Irish rights to J.K. Simmons thriller You Can’t Run Forever from Voltage Pictures.

The movie follows a teenage girl (Anaya) struggling with a tragic past who is hunted through the woods by a sociopath (Oscar winner Simmons) on a murderous rampage.

Pic is produced by Randle Schumacher (3 Geezers!) and is directed by Michelle Schumacher (I’m Not Here) from a script co-written with Carolyn Carpenter. Led by Simmons (Whiplash), it also stars Allen Leech (Downton Abbey: A New Era), Fernanda Urrejola (Cry Macho) and Isabelle Anaya (Donny’s Bar Mitzvah).

The deal was negotiated between Signature’s Director of Acquisitions & Development Elizabeth Williams and Voltage Pictures’ President and COO Jonathan Deckter.

Review: There are a whole lot of shark thrillers out there, but not many of them have a supernatural edge. Back in 2018, Steve Alten’s The Meg finally came to the big screen, but not in the form that we had originally been promised. The big screen Megalodon horror movie was released with a PG-13 rating – much to the chagrin of star Jason Statham – leaving fans hungry for a shark attack movie with a bit more bite. And it looks like we’re getting one this year.

Thriller film ‘You Can’t Run Forever’, which stars Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, has wrapped up its principal photography and the first stills from the film are here.

The stills, accessed by Deadline, give an idea about the film’s universe and setting. The film, formerly titled ‘The Woods’, is a rollercoaster ride that follows a sociopathic killer as he hunts a tormented teenager through the woods.

Exclusive: Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to environmental fable The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future, which had its world premiere in the World Cinema Competition at this year’s Sundance festival.

Fernanda Urrejola and Julio Cesar Cedillo will star alongside Josh Lucas in “The Black Demon.” The survival thriller is the latest film from Adrian Grünberg, the director of “Rambo: Last Blood” and “Get the Gringo.”

The film centers on an oilman who finds himself and his family stranded on a rig where he is targeted by a megalodon, a prehistoric shark.

Urrejola is best known for her work in “Narcos: Mexico,” the “Party of Five” reboot and Clint Eastwood’s most recent drama, “Cry Macho.” Cedillo played the title role in “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” and also appeared in “All the Pretty Horses,” “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Sicario.” He recently starred in Netflix’s acclaimed film “The Harder They Fall.”

The 91-year-old doesn’t embarrass himself, but this small stakes story is far from Clint’s finest hour. In “Cry Macho” Eastwood is a former rodeo cowboy and horse trainer named Mike who has run into hard times after a devastating heartbreak.

Clint Eastwood is back in the saddle (and behind the camera) for “Cry Macho,” a Western about a washed-up horse breeder who agrees to kidnap a child for his former boss. The film premiered in movie theaters on Friday, but for those who want to watch from home, “Cry Macho” is also streaming exclusively on HBO Max for the next 31 days.

Eastwood, 91, directed and produced the film in addition to playing the lead role. He first received the story nearly 40 years ago, but the timing wasn’t right, the Oscar winner said in an interview with Parade magazine. “I knew the character needed some mileage on him, so I turned it down,” he revealed.

Global streamer Starzplay and L.A.-based Spanish-language streaming platform Pantaya have re-teamed with U.K. production-distribution giant Fremantle and the Larraín brothers’ Fabula on sci-fi miniseries “The Shelter” (“El Refugio”).

Starring Alberto Guerra (“La Jauria”) and Ana Claudia Talancón (“Como Caído del Cielo”) and directed by Argentina’s Pablo Fendrik (“El Ardor”), “The Shelter” wraps principal photography this week after 10 weeks of filming in rural areas around Santiago de Chile.

In industry terms, “The Shelter” forms part of a burgeoning axis between like-minded and complementary players in the U.S., Latin America and the U.K. who have been involved in some of the most exciting, relevant and artistically ambitious of recent Spanish-language dramas hitting screens or in the pipeline, whether “La Jauría,” “Señorita 89” – where all four companies partner – or “Express.”

The series captures Fendrik on tremendous TV form after making “Amongst Men” and “The Bronze Garden,” both for HBO Latin America.

Cry Macho is the 39th feature film directed by Clint Eastwood, coming almost exactly 50 years after he made his directorial debut in 1971 with Play Misty for Me. It’s also Eastwood’s first time onscreen since 2018’s The Mule, which he also directed; he did not appear in his last effort behind the camera, 2019’s Richard Jewell. We mention all this simply because those last two films were far superior to this one, so it’s difficult to say if Cry Macho represents a decline in the 91-year-old filmmaker’s abilities or is just a more casually produced effort than those last efforts.

Which is not to say that Cry Macho doesn’t have heart; it does, almost too much of it, with the movie’s uneven script and performances treading dangerously close to contrived sentimentality. But the movie’s slack pacing and overall low stakes vibe prevent the characters...

At 91, Clint Eastwood still knows how to direct a movie with a nice, clean leisurely classical spareness, something you wish more directors knew how to do (or wanted to). As a filmmaker, Eastwood has earned the right to be called ageless. As an actor, though, he’s not trying to hide his age. In “Cry Macho,” he plays a broken-down horse breeder and former rodeo rider who is given the task of going down to Mexico City to retrieve a 13-year-old boy, Rafael (Eduardo Minnett), and drive him back to Texas. (He’s taking the boy from his wealthy-diva Mexican mother and bringing him to his American ranch-owner father.) Eastwood is still handsome, and he still does the Clint sneer, with one side of his mouth open a tiny bit wider than the other side. When Clint Eastwood throws a punch in his new film “Cry Macho” — and Eastwood the director has always had a trademark way of filming the connecting of a fist to a guy who deserves it — there’s a sort of “aww” quality to it.
