Michael Gillan was born in Dundee, Scotland. Gillan spent his childhood years there before his family moved to Australia. He originally trained to be a paramedic at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.
His acting journey started on the stage with no formal training, taking part in local theatre productions. After a few years he decided to pursue acting as a career and relocated to Melbourne to train at Howard Fine Acting Studio.
