I am sort of conflicted over Netflix’s latest standup comedy special, Ok, Mister, by observational comedian Deon Cole. There’s a moment in his set when Cole describes what observational comedy is. And yes, it’s quite simple. You observe things, and you find the humor in it. It totally seems like my kind of thing. Yet, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed Cole’s set. Sure, I dug the comedian’s laid-back vibe, but as a whole, Ok, Mister didn’t work for me. I thought (most of) the jokes were unfunny and, clocking in at one hour and five minutes; this was painfully long.

Now the thing is, all forms of art are subjective, and comedy is no exception. In fact, it is quite a profound example. There are many kinds of comedy, and not every kind of comedy is everyone’s cup of tea, which is only normal.

Wong filed for divorce from her ex-husband Justin Hakuta in December of 2023. In addition to starring in the special, Wong will direct and executive produce “Single Lady” alongside John Irwin.

Yves Mathieu East has joined the second season of Survival of the Thickest as a guest star.

The multi-hyphenate artist is pivoting to TV as East will appear in the next chapter of the A24 and Netflix scripted comedy alongside fellow guest stars like Anderson .Paak and Tika Sumpter. East’s modeling career includes appearances in campaigns by Burberry, GQ, Kenneth Cole, Puma and being tapped by Beyoncé for the Drip 2 Ivy Park campaign.

The comedy series Survival of the Thickest, created by Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Wittell (New Girl), hasn’t just survived, but thrived — and Season 2 is currently in production in New York.

The ensemble cast of Buteau, Tasha Smith (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Tone Bell, Liza Treyge, Peppermint (Harlem), and Marouane Zotti will be returning, along with new guest stars Anderson .Paak, Jonathan Chad Higginbotham, Deon Cole, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jerrie Johnson, Celisse, Rolonda Watts, Michael Rishawn, Tika Sumpter, Monét X Change, and RonReaco Lee.

Survival of the Thickest is a story only Buteau can tell. Inspired by her acclaimed book of essays of the same name, the first season’s eight episodes follow Mavis Beaumont (played by Buteau), a stylist whose life is blown up after she catches her partner (Taylor Selé) in bed with another woman.

Exclusive: Leslie Jones and Deon Cole have been tapped to headline the second annual Because They’re Funny (Btf) Comedy Festival, which will take place September 27-29 at The Wharf and DC Improv.

Jones, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, will perform on Sunday, September 29. Black-ish alum Cole will host the “Breakout Comedian of the Year” competition, in which up to 16 comedians will be selected from the pool of submissions to perform live in the semifinals in mid-August in Los Angeles.

The festival from Nice Crowd and Events DC also includes panels, comedy classes, and networking events.

Fry, Leela and Bender are back. Hulu has unveiled the trailer for Season 12 of the revival of “Futurama,” set to premiere July 29 on the streamer.

The crew embarks on different adventures in the new season, including birthday party games to the death, A.I. friends and enemies, the next chapter in Fry and Leela’s romance and more.

John Dimaggio, BIlly West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice Lamarche, Lauren Tom, Phil Lamar and David Herman all return to the animated sci-fi series. Average Joe is returning for a second season. BET has renewed the dark comedy-drama series starring Deon Cole. The show premiered last summer, and the tenth and final episode of the season was released on August 17th.

Also starring Tammy Townsend, Malcolm Barrett, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, Michael Trucco, Ashley Olivia Fisher, and Pasha Lychnikoff, the Average Joe series is based on the life of co-creator Robb Cullen. The story follows the life of a blue-collar plumber (Cole) who discovers that his father led a secret life and stole millions of dollars and a car from dangerous people just before he died.

Of the renewal, Cole said in a statement, "Hold on tight, A Lot Of Action! This one will be crazy. Let's go!"

Created by Robb Cullen, Average Joe was released June 26, 2023 to strong reviews (86% on Rotten Tomatoes), quickly becoming the #1 scripted drama series on BET in its debut week.

Season 2 is slated to begin production in late 2024 in South Africa. In an unusual move for an ongoing original series on another streamer, Season 1 of Average Joe will be made available on Netflix this summer, sources said. That would give the comedic drama exposure and raise awareness ahead of its second season on BET .
