Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track… So, we’re going to do the hard work for you.
We head to France this week, a fitting time to spotlight TV in the nation given that Mipcom Cannes is taking place. France Télévisions’ Daughters of Fire takes a modernistic approach to a tale from some 400 years or so ago and the creators and producers wanted to conjure themes around feminism, resistance and #MeToo when forging the drama series.

Acclaimed Romanian animator Anca Damian has lined up her next live-action feature.
The filmmaker behind Annecy top prizewinner “Crulic: The Path to Beyond” and “Marona’s Fantastic Tale” will write and direct “First People on Earth,” a tragicomic family saga about a biracial woman re-experiencing her native Namibia after decades in Europe.
Returning to her birth country for a family funeral, and bringing her non-verbal, pre-adolescent son in tow, the heroine falls in with a troupe of theatrical Bushmen – an Indigenous tribe, divorced from their historic lands, forced to re-enact ancestral myths for tourist dollars.
Michaël Goldberg, from Belgium’s Daylight Films, will produce, with the filmmakers now scouting for an additional European production partner. Though written and conceived to shoot fast with a principally non-professional cast, Damian has nevertheless eyed an internationally-renowned performer for the lead. Once locked, the filmmaker plans to shoot the project quick order. The film will deal in dreams,...

Produced by and starring Margot Robbie, Barbie (read our review Here) isn’t only the biggest movie to come out in 2023, having earned having earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office, but it also happens to be Warner Bros’ all time highest-grossing global release. While that Robbie project rakes in the dough, American Horror Story casting director Eric Dawson, who casts the long-running FX anthology series with his partners Robert J. Ulrich and Carol Kritzer at Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer Casting, has revealed that Robbie audition for the second season of the series more than a decade ago.

Margot Robbie could’ve starred in American Horror Story: Asylum as she auditioned for a role in the horror anthology series.
Casting director Eric Dawson opened up about seeing Robbie in action during a test for the second season of the FX series back in 2012.
“Margot has a lot of ‘it’ factors. That’s the tough thing for casting directors who aren’t in the room [anymore] with actors,” Dawson said in an interview with In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast.
Dawson continued, “Margot is probably one of my favorite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room.”
AHS: Asylum aired for 13 episodes in 2012 and although Robbie didn’t get the part in the series, she would go on to star in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

According to his fellow costar Rosie O’Donnell, American Gigolo lead Jon Bernthal was more than pleased that Showtime’s neo-noir crime drama was a one-and-done series.
“Jon Bernthal was not happy with the show, and it was very clear,” the actress and former daytime talk show host told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. “It’s difficult to work that way on a set. He was never happy that he was playing a gigolo. And I’m like, ‘Well, it’s called American Gigolo.'”

Ahead of the Showtime and Paramount merger, Paramount Global is cleaning house. “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” two drama series that premiered last year, have been canceled at the channel, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, Showtime will no longer be proceeding with the series “Three Women,” starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevy. The series, which finished principal production, will be shopped to other outlets, and “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In” are also reportedly being shopped.
Paramount Global announced the integration of Showtime into Paramount across both streaming and linear television on January 30, revealing it will occur “later this year.” Rather than just offering Showtime on the Paramount app, Showtime Ott and Showtime linear will be rebranded to “Paramount with Showtime,” and the Showtime Ott and Anytime apps will be shut down, IndieWire is told. Though production on the Shailene Woodley-led drama “Three Women” has already been completed, the series will no longer premiere on Showtime, which has also decided not to renew “Let the Right One In” and “American Gigolo.” The three series are the first known casualties as Paramount moves the Showtime brand moves under the purview of Paramount and reprioritizes its content.
Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced on Monday that Showtime’s cable network would be renamed to “Paramount With Showtime” while its streaming service would collapse into Paramount , noting that the company “will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views. We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential.”

There’s little point in comparing Showtime’s “American Gigolo” with the cult film of the same name — the new series borrows the basic premise of Paul Schrader’s exceptionally stylish neo-noir, along with a few characters, then sets them adrift in a rote crime drama. Where the original “American Gigolo” captured the excess of the 1980s while presenting a captivating portrait of loneliness, its supposed sequel struggles to find purpose or even settle on a tone in its first three episodes.
So, thank God and/or casting director Wendy O’Brien for placing Jon Bernthal, who’s already turned in one extraordinarily kinetic performance this year, at the center of this otherwise meandering murder mystery. The “We Own This City” actor leads the series as Julian Kaye, a sex worker who’s wrongfully convicted for murder, imprisoned for 15 years, and exonerated — all in the hourlong series premiere. In Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama feature film “American Gigolo,” Julian Kaye (played by Richard Gere) is a cocky playboy-for-hire who is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Showtime’s TV adaptation opens with the image of a very different man; 15 years removed and in prison for the crime, Julian (played by Jon Bernthal) is beaten down and broken. There are still remnants of the swanky persona he donned for clients and glossy Los Angeles life he lived — after all, the title theme is set to Blondie’s “Call Me” and features an easy riding Julian in his retro convertible — but Bernthal’s take on the character aims to undress his motivations and psyche, shedding the escort’s designer suits to uncover who Julian is and how he came to be.
“The movie is a great L.A. noir, but we knew nothing about Julian,” executive producer Jonathan Littman told TheWrap.

“American Gigolo,” Showtime’s “present-day reimagining” of Paul Schrader’s 1980 erotic drama of the same name, first began as an idea gestating at Jerry Bruckheimer Television in 2014. According to executive producer Jonathan Littman, the show — which stars Jon Bernthal in the role originated by Richard Gere — once had Jared Leto attached to play the suave, high-end escort.
Not entirely a reboot and certainly not a remake, the series picks up 15 years after Julian Kaye (Bernthal) was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Following his exoneration, Julian must once navigate the treacherous world of L.A. elites, all the while navigating who betrayed him in the first place.

Showtime got a little bit lucky with The Man Who Fell to Earth. The sci-fi drama took a title that means very little to modern audiences and a story that didn’t really require extending into a new era, but creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman had a specific and contemporary tale they wanted to tell — and, in Chiwetel Ejiofor, a fully committed leading man giving a wild, hilarious, soulful central performance.
Perhaps owing to the arbitrary attempt to build around the title of a 1976 film (and a 1963 novel), The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn’t appear to have generated any buzz at all and Ejiofor didn’t even crack the outer edge of the Emmy conversation.

Over 30 years after "American Gigolo" launched Richard Gere's career, the film is getting a TV adaptation with another suave leading man in the starring role. Jon Bernthal is taking over the reins as Julian Kaye, a former male escort who spent years being the object of affection until a murder charge landed him in prison. The series almost works as a direct sequel to the original film: picking up 15 years later, Julian is exonerated when new evidence comes to light proving he did not commit the murder that got him put away. But while trying to get back into his old scene, he realizes that picking up where he left off isn't as simple as he'd like. So he does as TV characters so often do, and gets to work trying to solve the murder himself.

"Somebody set me up… It's not over!!" Showtime has revealed the second trailer for American Gigolo, a new streaming series remake of the 1980 film of the same name. The first trailer was quite impressive and totally sold me, this one adds to that buzz. This series stars the ultimate suave guy Jon Bernthal, taking on the very same role that was played by Richard Gere in the original film. Showtime's American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film. Julian Kaye has always been an object of desire, so much so that people are willing to destroy him in order to have him. Exonerated, after 15 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit, he now faces the challenge of picking up the pieces as the detective who put him behind bars tries to unravel the mystery that led to his wrongful incarceration. Also with Gretchen Mol, Gabriel Labelle,...

Jon Bernthal takes on the role of the “American Gigolo” in the trailer for the upcoming Showtime reboot series.
In the series, the actor plays Julian Kaye, who thrusts himself back into the Los Angeles sex scene in a bid to find the man who set him up on a murder charge for the death of his former client.
A new teaser shows Rosie O’Donnell’s character, Detective Sunday, telling Kaye that the “DNA results came back conclusive, you’re a free man.”

"I would never mess around with people that powerful." Showtime has revealed the full-length trailer for American Gigolo, a new streaming series remake of the 1980 film of the same name. This series stars the ultimate suave guy Jon Bernthal, who is pretty much perfect casting for the same role that was played by Richard Gere in the original film. Also starring Gretchen Mol, Gabriel Labelle, Lizzie Brocheré, and Leland Orser. This is a fantastic trailer!

The life of an American Gigolo isn't as easy as one might think.
Forty-two years after Richard Gere made an impression with theater-goers as gigolo Julian Kaye, it's Jon Bernthal's time at the wheel.
American Gigolo is present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, but it's hard not to notice the similarities between Gere and Berenthal.
The American Gigolo has a specific look, and we can't wait to see what Bernthal does with the role.
The series follows Julian Kaye (Bernthal) after his wrongful conviction and release from 15 years in prison.
He'll be navigating his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother, and the people who betrayed him.
While Julian struggles to reconcile the escort he was in the past and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) seeks the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago.

Sex sells, but murder is where the real money is.
Jon Bernthal stars as Julian Kaye, an ex-escort who sets out to exonerate himself after serving 15 years for a murder charge for the death of his former client. Kaye finds former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol) for answers, while Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell) tries to piece together what really happened at the crime scene.
The Showtime series reimagines the Kaye character originated by Richard Gere in Paul Schrader’s 1980 film “American Gigolo.”
The drama also stars Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, the heiress to a ring of sex workers; Gabriel Labelle as Johnny, a younger version of Julian; Leland Orser as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire; and guest star Wayne Brady as Julian’s best friend and mentor, Lorenzo.
Lead star Bernthal previously told GQ that he was even surprised to be cast in the lead role for the upcoming series.

Naomi Grossman is one of the most popular “American Horror Story” guest stars ever, but she hasn’t been seen on the FX limited series since 2018. If Ryan Murphy called her up to ask her to star on the upcoming 11th season, would she be game? “Well of course!” Grossman recently told me exclusively. “What fool actor wouldn’t? I come when I’m called, you know? I would say yes. Where? When?”
Grossman’s fan-fave character Pepper is in the “AHS” record books for being the first character to appear in multiple seasons. The latest classic movie to be reimagined as a prestige TV show is “American Gigolo,” Paul Schrader’s 1980 thriller about a male escort accused of murder. While many cinephiles are looking forward to seeing what Showtime can do with the material, Paul Schrader is not one of them. The director recently took to his always-colorful Facebook page to disavow the series and emphasize that he has no involvement with it.
“After the Showtime trailer appeared online I’ve been asked if I am involved,” Schrader wrote. “The answser (sic) is No.”
Schrader revealed that has long been opposed to updating his most iconic films, as he feels that they are products of specific eras and only make sense in the contexts in which they were made.
“Some years ago I received a call from Paramount asking about remaking ‘American Gigolo’ as a series,” he wrote. “I replied that I thought...

Julian Kaye just wants to escape himself.
Jon Bernthal stars as the iconic male escort character originated by Richard Gere in Paul Schrader’s 1980 film “American Gigolo.” The Showtime series reimagining of the famed feature is set in the present day, with Julian (Bernthal) trying to decipher why he was framed and wrongfully convicted for murder.
“I can always just be this other guy,” Bernthal as Julian says in the teaser trailer. “This guy isn’t scary. I jumped in water and then I washed him off. And then I get to be me.”

Exclusive Updated: Production on Showtime’s drama series American Gigolo has been paused again, this time for at least two weeks, as the series’ co-executive producer David Bar Katz has exited the Paramount TV Studios-produced series. His departure comes three weeks after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct and almost two weeks after The Offer executive producers Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg joined the series as consulting producers.
Toscano, a seasoned showrunner who ran The Offer, is said to have taken the reins of American Gigolo, with Rothberg providing support. The duo are expected to use the two weeks to work on prepping Episode 8, which is getting a script. The series, headlined by Jon Bernthal, originally had received a 10-episode order. Exclusive: The Offer executive producers Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg have come on board Showtime’s upcoming series American Gigolo, from Paramount Television Studios. They will serve as consulting producers, working alongside Executive Producer David Bar Katz.
The move comes a week after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct. As Deadline reported, Katz stepped up in the immediate aftermath of Hollander’s exit. Production was then suspended both over the leadership change as well as an actor being temporarily unavailable. Filming has now resumed, with Toscano and Rothberg working closely with Katz to steer the show.
Toscano is an experienced showrunner who has an overall deal at Paramount TV Studios, she most recently ran the studio’s Paramount limited series The Offer, about the making of The Godfather.

Exclusive: Showtime and Paramount Television Studios have suspended production for four days on upcoming series American Gigolo, a reboot of the popular 1980 movie. The move comes a couple of days after the Paramount network and TV studio severed ties with the series’ developer, writer, director and executive producer David Hollander following an investigation into allegations of misconduct.
Production on the series, headlined by Jon Bernthal, was originally slated to continue following Hollander’s ouster, with one of Hollander’s top lieutenants, believed to be co-executive producer David Bar Katz, stepping in as showrunner. The American Gigolo series, produced by Paramount TV Studios with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, has about two episodes left to shoot from its 10-episode order, I hear.
In addition to the leadership change, I hear the production shutdown is being attributed to an actor being temporarily unavailable. The reasons are unclear but I have not heard that it’s Covid-related.

Longtime Showtime showrunner David Hollander has officially been let go from his new series “American Gigolo” following allegations of misconduct.
Deadline reported that the developer, director, executive producer, and showrunner parted ways with the “American Gigolo” TV adaptation for Showtime, which is produced by Paramount Television Studios.
“David Hollander is no longer on the drama series ‘American Gigolo’ and Paramount Television Studios no longer has a producing relationship with him,” a spokesperson told Deadline in a statement.
The outlet also stated that multiple sources close to production claimed Hollander’s firing was after an investigation into allegations of misconduct that allegedly were not related to sexual harassment. It is believed that co-executive producer David Bar Katz, who also worked with Hollander on Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” will take over as “American Gigolo” showrunner.

“David Hollander is no longer on the drama series ‘American Gigolo’ and Paramount Television Studios no longer has a producing relationship with him,” a spokesperson said, but declined to comment further.

Jon Bernthal has played a cop, a superhero, a hitman, and a zombie killer. But what “The Wolf of Wall Street” alum hasn’t fully embodied, according to him, is being a sex object.
“The Punisher” star told GQ that he is still surprised to be cast in Showtime’s “American Gigolo” series, based on Paul Schrader’s 1980 film about a male escort who is framed for murder. Richard Gere originally played the role, which instantly made Gere an icon.
“I do not believe that I possess any kind of natural sex appeal,” Bernthal said. “I’ve always looked at myself as this weird-looking guy.”
Filming the series requires Bernthal to don “a fancy suit and some shoes that hurt my feet,” plus a “goofy” shirt and a handful of gold chains to play sex worker Julian Kaye.

American Gigolo is moving full steam ahead at Showtime.
Today, the premium cabler announced a series order for a 10-episode reboot, which is written and directed by Emmy nominee David Hollander (Ray Donovan).
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.
Bernthal also serves as a producer. The project is a production of Paramount Television Studios.
American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film.
Bernthal will play Julian Kaye, who is introduced 18 years after being arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry.
This happens while seeking the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love.
“If you haven’t already fallen under the spell of Jon Bernthal, get ready,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement.

Showtime has given a series order to the TV adaptation of “American Gigolo” starring Jon Bernthal, the premium cabler announced Tuesday.
The drama, a modern-day reimagining of the 1980 film starring Richard Gere, comes from writer and director David Hollander (“Ray Donovan”). Bernthal stars as Julian Kaye, who is introduced 15 years after he’s been arrested for murder and is struggling to find his footing in the Los Angeles sex industry.
“American Gigolo” follows Julian as he seeks the truth about the setup that sent him to prison all those years ago and attempts to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love (played by “Boardwalk Empire’s” Gretchen Mol).
In addition to Bernthal and Mol, the cast also includes Rosie O’Donnell, Lizzie Brocheré, Gabriel Labelle, Leland Orse and guest star Wayne Brady.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce along with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed. Bernthal also serves as a producer.
