Slavna Martinovic was born in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia. She moved to Hong Kong as a child where she grew up and completed high school.
She continued her studies at the London College of Fashion in London. Following her graduation she has returned for a year to Hong Kong and started her career in fashion styling and make up for fashion glossies and shows.
In 1998 she visited Los Angeles and charmed by the city she made it her new home.
Interested in further exploring the possibilities of fusing costume and make up she began her study of special effects make up and prosthetics at the Joe Blasco school of Make up in Hollywood.
At the time she met Theadora Van Runkle legendary costume designer ( Bonnie and Clyde, Godfather 2, York New York) who become her mentor. Their friendship has had a pivotal influence in Slavna's development as a designer. Apart from their interest in costumes both women shared infatuation for fashion and art.
She has lived in Los Angeles for five years designing for films, music videos, styling for fashion magazines like W, Harper's Bazaar, Flaunt, Contents, Cosmopolitan, US weekly, Marie Claire, Soma... She was nominated for the MVPA award for the "best make up design" in a music video in 2001 for the music video "Fiction" ( Orgy).
In 2008 Slavna launched her own fashion and jewellery label that premiered at the Berlin Fashion week and was featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Bunte, Another Magazine online, Teen Vogue and many other online and printed publications. The collection was also a part of the book "Backstage Fashion Week Berlin" by teNeues publishing.
Now based in Frankfurt, Slavna designs for theatre, working with directors, choreographers, composers and musicians. She has been a long standing collaborator of the Dutch Israeli contemporary dance company Club Guy and Roni and has created costumes for numerous stages across the world: Schauspiel Köln, Göteborg Opera,Theatre National de Chaillot Paris, Taichung Meropolitanl Opera House, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Konzert Theater Bern, Staatstheater Mainz, Ballet Moskva, to mention but a few.
In 2014 she designed a feature film "Beautiful Now" directed by Daniela Amavia starring Abigail Spencer and Sonja Kinski in Los Angels.
She has freshly completed "La Mode" a multi disciplinary theatre piece by Dutch Japanese pianist and a director Tomoko Mukaiyama , where she had a pleasure of collaborating with acclaimed architect Toyo Ito who has created sets for the piece. "La Mode" inaugurated Taichung Metropolitan Opera in Taiwan past October.
Her costume designs were featured at the Bahrushin State Theatre Museum in Moscow in the exhibition " The costume at the turn of the Century 1995 - 2015" curated by Igor Russanoff.
She has completed her MA in Multimedia arts at the University of arts in Belgrade in 2009.
She lives between Frankfurt and Los Angeles and wherever her work may take her.
