Back in June 2024, we learned that Fall stars Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey would be starring in an upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed. Well, guess who just joined the cast? Scream star Hayden Panettiere! She, along with several others, will be starring alongside Gardner and Currey in the new horror film.

Wait! We need to clear some things up about this movie first. It's not actually a remake. It was initially believed to be one, but instead, it's a sequel to The Breed. It's also been given an official title, A Breed Apart.

While it's still unclear who is writing the script for the film, filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst (Nightmare Shark) will be directing and producing via their Curmudgeon Films production company. In addition, Daro Film Distribution is signed on to co-produce and will be financing the movie as well.

Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing A Breed Apart, and are also producing it hrough their Curmudgeon Films shingle. The Fursts are no strangers to killer animal movies, as Griff’s previous directing credits include Trailer Park Shark, Ghost Shark, Swamp Shark, Lake Placid 3, Alligator Alley, and Arachnoquake. Exclusive: Hayden Panettiere will star in A Breed Apart. Known for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes, Kirby Reed in slasher franchise Scream and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Panettiere will take an as yet unspecified role in the film, which uses Wes Craven’s cult 2006 picture The Breed as a jump-off point.

In addition to Panettiere signing on, Deadline can also reveal the film has rounded out its ensemble cast.

Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile, Riele Downs and Page Kennedy will all appear. They join the previously announced Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey, who were seen together in vertigo-inducing Netflix movie Fall.

Billed as a reimagining of Wes Craven-produced and Nicholas Mastandrea-directed The Breed, the upcoming movie is more accurately a sequel of sorts and is set after events of the first film. The new picture originally bore the same name, but the title has now been tweaked.

While remakes can be hit-or-miss, we hope that the upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed does the original 2006 movie justice. We first learned of this film back in May 2024, and more information has come out since then.

The Breed is set to be directed and produced by filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst. They previously helmed the horror action film Nightmare Shark. They will produce this horror flick through their film production company, Curmudgeon Films, which will also be handling sales across the Americas. Additionally, the movie will be co-produced and financed by Daro Film Distribution, which also represents the international rights to the film. It's unknown who will be writing the script, though.

With a sequel to the fear-of-heights thriller Fall on the way, Variety reports this week that the two stars of the 2022 movie will reunite for the upcoming remake of The Breed, a new take on the killer dog horror movie that was produced by Wes Craven back in 2006.

Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey will star alongside Page Kennedy (The Meg) in the remake that’s being directed by filmmaking brothers Sean and Bryan Furst.

Exclusive: Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey scaled a 2,000-foot communications tower in Fall and will now face-off against wild dogs in The Breed.

Gardner has joined the survival pic, reuniting her with Currey (Shazam!) who had already signed on. She played Karolina Dean in Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu and Vicky in David Gordon Green’s Halloween. She also starred in Project Almanac and the Beautiful series.

Gardner and Currey co-starred in Scott Mann’s vertigo thriller Fall. After the success of the first film a sequel is in the works.

There was a significant degree of excitement in horror circles when it was announced that British director Ben Wheatley was going to be directing the sequel to 2018’s Jason Statham vs Giant Shark blockbuster The Meg. The hope was that Wheatley’s horror sensibilities and eye for jet-black humour would add a bit of bite to what was otherwise a passably entertaining, but ultimately uninspired Jaws retread. Unfortunately, those hopes have not come to pass, as there’s very little trace of the acclaimed British director’s signature touch in this largely derivative sequel.

Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” adventure The Meg (watch it at This Link), has racked up almost $400 million at the global box office since reaching theatres at the start of August. Now the film, which has been available on PVOD since the end of August, is ready to start streaming. Variety reports that Meg 2 will be available to watch on the Max streaming service as of next Friday, September 29th.

Variety notes that, “In order to stream the film, you’ll have to sign up for a Max account, with subscriptions starting at $9.99/Month. You can also access Max through Prime Video’s add-on, which offers a 7-day free trial.”

Less than two months after its release in theaters, “The Meg 2: The Trench” is diving into the streaming world. The big-budget sequel arrives on Max on Sept. 29.

The film, about a murderous 80-foot prehistoric shark, is directed by “Rebecca” helmer Ben Wheatley, who takes the reins from Jon Turteltaub. Turteltaub directed the first installment of the franchise, which took $530 million worldwide. Jason Statham reprises his role in the sequel, which also stars Wu Jing, Cliff Curtis, Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Page Kennedy, Shuya Sophia Cai and Sergio Peris-Mencheta. Li Bingbing, who led “The Meg” opposite Statham, is not a part of the sequel.

The Netflix series follows a working-class family living in Indianapolis as they deal with the ups and downs of life. The sitcom stars Wanda Sykes, Mike Epps, Kim Fields, Page Kennedy, Diamond Lyons, Khali Spraggins, Jermelle Simon, Gabrielle Dennis, and Journey Christine.

The season half of the 16-episode second season arrived in February. It's not known how many episodes will be in the third season.

The summer box office season may have reached the dog days of August, but it’s hardly looked stronger over the past few months. Though the openings of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” won’t be able to take down “Barbie” as the top performer in North America, both new releases are boosting theaters to a weekend with four different features grossing north of $25 million.

Paramount Pictures’ “Mutant Mayhem” added $9.3 million from 3,858 locations on Friday, tracking neck-and-neck with “Oppenheimer” for second place on domestic charts. The animated feature, produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, opened with Tuesday evening preview screenings and is now tracking for a $42 million five-day debut — squarely within the projections of $35 million to $45 million heading into the weekend.

That’s not shabby for the “Tmnt” entry, which cost only $70 million to produce — an especially economical figure for an animated studio release.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

The biggest complaint about 2018’s The Meg, an American and Chinese co-production loosely based on author Steve Alten’s novel, was that it lacked bite. The PG-13 action vehicle for Jason Statham brought the B-movie sense of fun, but it was too restrained regarding the megalodon carnage. Meg 2: The Trench answers the first film’s criticisms, though not in the way you’d anticipate. Director Ben Wheatley forgoes retreading the same waters with a higher body count. Instead, Wheatley goes full throttle on the B-movie spectacle, packing the nearly two-hour runtime to the gills with aquatic horror madness and nonstop entertainment.

Picking up six years after The Meg, Jonas Taylor (Statham) is now a fully integrated member of the found family forged from the last film, living at the underwater research facility and furthering their studies of the Trench and the Megalodon sharks, one of which they have in captivity.

The movie-mad phenomenon of “Barbenheimer” has been a thrilling reminder that audiences can still embrace the movie-theater experience, turning up in awesome droves when they’re offered something new and adventurous. It’s also been powerful evidence that films that aren’t formulaic sequels can succeed in a way that too many recent cookie-cutter franchise films have not. But will all that go down as a lesson for the future? Or a giant anomaly?

We probably shouldn‘t kid ourselves. “The Meg 2: The Trench” is a trivial (if not unwatchable) piece of semi-preposterous big-budget junk. But arriving just two weeks after “Barbenheimer,” it stands as a pesky signifier of what mainstream movies have been for the last 40 years, and what they’ll likely continue to be. A cash-grab sequel to a cynical knockoff? Check. One that aims squarely at the lowest common denominator? Check. Visual effects that steamroll what...

No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.

At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.

Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.

Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

After the 2018 Jason Statham-starring sci-fi action/horror extravaganza The Meg made an imposing global haul of roughly $530 million ($385 million of that from outside the U.S.), it became instantly inevitable that more giant deep-sea monsters would quickly be hatched to populate a sequel. It follows that some of these overgrown aquatic freaks might be very hungry, or perhaps just anti-social and angry that their population is being slightly decreased. Fortunately, Statham is there when he’s most needed, taking on countless creatures whose deep-water habitat is being invaded, perhaps for the first time since the beginning of time. Little wonder they’re upset.

At first, everything about Meg 2: The Trench appears bigger and stronger, now that it’s apparent that the producers look to have a major money-making franchise on their hands. Unfortunately, these same producers, along with their collaborators, have for some reason stinted in the creation...

Given his grounding in visceral horror and thrillers laced with a mischievous vein of dark humor, Ben Wheatley seemed an intriguing choice to take the directing reins on Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel to the 2018 B-movie about a megalodon terrorizing a bunch of scientists and Jason Statham before homing in on a buffet of beachgoers.

The good news is that Statham’s back, bringing his rugged charm and tough-guy self-irony to sparkling dialogue like “I’ve got this,” “Shit!” and “See ya later, chum,” that last one delivered as he dispatches a prehistoric shark. The disappointing news is that the big, dumb fun promised by a terrific trailer — ingeniously cut to the 1977 Heart banger, “Barracuda” — only materializes intermittently in a movie that too often struggles to find the balance between suspense and monster-size silliness.

Five years ago, The Meg came out and was a pleasant summer-ending surprise. Placing its tongue firmly in its cheek for 113 minutes, the watery spectacle allowed us to watch the ever-watchable Jason Statham go mano-a-mano with a 75-foot shark. The idea behind the movie (which was based on a much more sober-minded novel by Steve Alten than had been in development for nearly a quarter century) was apparently to make a good old-fashioned monster movie with a few knowing winks to the audience.

The Meg’s box office success and its final shot also virtually ensured a sequel, so now Meg 2: The Trench arrives with Statham and a few other holdovers back for another round. Meanwhile workmanlike director Jon Turtletaub has been replaced this time by the eccentric indie maverick Ben Wheatley.

Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 movie The Meg (watch it at This Link) delivered on its promise of being a “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” adventure – and now director Ben Wheatley’s sequel Meg 2: The Trench is set to reach theatres on August 4th. In a newly released featurette, which you can watch in the embed above, Wheatley says his intention with this film was to make a supercharged sequel with bigger creatures and bigger action… and judging by the footage on display in the featurette, it definitely looks like this follow-up has a change of being better and more exciting than its predecessor.

Back in 2018, Warner Bros. scored a massive, somewhat unexpected success with "The Meg." The adaptation of Steve Alten's book of the same name, in which Jason Statham takes on a thought-to-be-extinct megalodon, proved to be a big winner with audiences, raking in $530 million at the global box office. Now, five years and a full global pandemic later, Statham is back in the sequel, "Meg 2: The Trench," which once again hopes to become a late summer sleeper hit. This time, though, it appears competition is going to be a bigger issue.

Box Office Pro currently estimates director Ben Wheatley's big shark sequel could make anywhere between $22 and $27 million domestically on its opening weekend. That's not exactly what a studio wants to see with a big blockbuster, to say the least. While the budget has yet to be revealed, the original cost $130 million before marketing. Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link), is set to reach theatres on August 4th – and while this sequel will feature multiple giant sharks, those aren’t the only prehistoric creatures that will be rampaging across the screen. In fact, a newly released promo, which you can check out in the embed above, says that this time “the Megs are just the beginning”. One of the other giant creatures we’ll be seeing in Meg 2: The Trench is an octopus, and you can get a glimpse of some giant octopus action in this promo, including a moment where the octopus gets in a fight with a Meg! A moment that brings to mind the 2009 classic Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus.

Barbenheimer is living up to its billing as a cinematic phenomenon and both films will still figure prominently in August.

The Meg was a big hit internationally back in 2018, swimming its way to $384 million at the international box office. In comparison, the film’s domestic total was just $145 million.

Upcoming sequel Meg 2: The Trench is looking to have the same success internationally, and today a gorgeous new poster has been unleashed for the big screen follow-up.

This one promotes the release of the film in China, where The Meg performed particularly well back in 2018. And it’s unlike any movie poster you’ll ever see here in the States.

Last week, Warner Bros. unveiled the trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link). If that trailer left you wondering if the sea creature mayhem of this film was going to boost it into the R rating territory, you can stop wondering. Because it hasn’t. Just like The Meg, Meg 2: The Trench has earned a PG-13 rating. The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given it a PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.

Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.

The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating.
