Karl Gan
- Writer
- Producer
Karl Gan is a screenwriter and producer primarily in the horror, thriller, and coming-of-age genres. He has written for a variety of projects across multiple mediums.
He is the creator and head writer of The Last Bout (2024), a ten-episode historical sports drama for Mediacorp Singapore, about two best friends in 1930s Malaya who must fight each other in the boxing ring to survive The Great Depression. He is also creator of Therapy Z (2024), a zombie thriller for Audible that has been greenlit for a full series. It features a government therapist trying to hide her dark secrets even as she helps people recover from the trauma of the undead apocalypse.
He has also written for video games, contributing to popular Ubisoft action game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (2020). In 2019, his horror script, This Bedroom is Dead, was featured on the annual Bloodlist, a list of the best unproduced horror works in Hollywood. That same year, he served as a staff writer on Singaporean web comedy Fam! which was also nominated for the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series.
The running thread between all of Karl's projects is the theme of "repression" - he believes that sweeping things under the rug will lead to more terrifying outcomes than if one greets the light with open arms. Karl hopes to change this Asian practice of keeping secrets to save face, by featuring characters and psychology not commonly seen in our culture.
