Current conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Tenure started in 1993. Lives in San Francisco with partner Josh Robison.

Is also founder and conductor of the New World Symphony located in Miami Beach, Florida.

Currently recording a series of live Mahler symphony concerts. Five are already released. Tours with the San Francisco Symphony every year, usually to Europe and the United States.

In 2012 during an interview with Terry Gross on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air," Thomas said that father had changed his last name in an attempt to establish an acting career without the associations of his famous name, and also because there was a small but intense group of stalker-level fans harassing the family.
