TV/screenwriter Kat Smith has written for Warners, Universal, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox/Fx, pay cable, independents, and Emmy- and Oscar-winning actors and producers, including Robin Wright, Jodie Foster, and Patricia Heaton.
Kat's directorial debut, The Clearing, enjoyed a long life on the festival circuit, including Seattle, Cleveland and Austin film festivals, where it won "Best Short". Starring Titus Welliver and Laurel Holloman, the 35mm film aired on IFC, PBS, several foreign territories, and two airlines. It was released with director's commentary as part of the Broadcast magazine, FilmFest.
An alum of the AFI's Directing Workshop for Women and Film Independent's Directors Lab, Kat was chosen as one of Filmmaker magazine's "25 New Faces to Watch." She was a Millay Colony Fellow, the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts grant in screenwriting and one of over a thousand writers chosen for The Writers Lab, sponsored by Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey and Nicole Kidman. Other honors include: WGA Feature Diversity Honoree, Chanticleer Discovery Finalist, Fade In magazine's screenplay contest, the Horton Foote Screenplay Award, and a finalist for the Sundance film labs.
Kat gives back to her community by chairing the Writers Guild Activities Committee and the WGAW Craft Conference & Retreat, a biennial weekend event, featuring master classes with writers such as Pamela Adlon, Vince Gilligan, Jenji Kohan, Jill Soloway and Matthew Weiner.
