This four part, eight hour miniseries turns the fate of a family of German Jews into a sprawling drama that covers all the bases of the holocaust horror. It was strong stuff and a big Emmy winner, boosting the careers of James Woods and Michael Moriarty. His warped charisma as a psychotic Nazi is so good that he’s consistently more interesting than the courageous victims. As for Meryl Streep, she became an instant star — everybody remembered her from this. Although it’s been called ‘The Holocaust for Dummies,’ it’s a quality show. Looking from today’s perspective, after forty years of Political Correctness adjustments, I’m not sure any two viewers will react in quite the same way.

This is one of the reasons I love Scream Factory so much. The Doctor and the Devils is a film that I have never seen. I’ve heard it mentioned a couple of times, but never did the opportunity arise for me to have seen it. It’s weird, because it sounds right up my alley. Thankfully, on November 14th, Scream Factory will be dropping the film onto Blu-ray. Check out the press release below, and be sure to pre-order your copy by either clicking here to purchase on Shout!’s website, or here for Amazon.

With Red Scorpion out now on Blu-ray, we take a look at what this 80s action fest can teach us about guerrilla warfare…
Standing at six feet five inches tall, Dolph Lundgren was the strapping alpha male of 80s cinema. After landing a tiny role in the James Bond movie A View To A Kill in 1985, the latter half of the decade saw the chemical engineering graduate, ex-bodyguard and Karate champion at the height of his rippling powers.
Lundgren punched Apollo Creed to death in front of James Brown in Rocky IV in 1985, starred as He-Man in Masters Of The Universe in 1987, and two years after that, headed off to Namibia to shoot his toughest assignment yet: the action epic, Red Scorpion.
Apparently fated to play Russian characters – his brief appearance in the 007 flick was as a Kgb henchman – Lundgren plays Nikolai Rachenko, an elite Soviet soldier sent on a mission to Africa.

Fionnula Flanagan is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Irish Film & Television Awards which will be held in Dublin on February 11th. Flanagan has had by any standards, a remarkable career in film and stage, the actress recently joked that she had checked previous winners of the award and was “encouraged to find that their work lives continue, some even flourishing, so that if I learn my lines and hit my marks and don't bump into the furniture, my own career might just continue on also.” Since starring in her movie debut in 1967’s Ulysses, based on James Joyce’s famous work, alongside Milo O’Sea and Tp McKenna. Ifta chief executive Áine Moriarty described Flanagan as a contribution as “a wonderful representative internationally, of Ireland’s film and television industry.” Flanagan was born in Dublin 1941 and trained at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre as...

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best,...

You're just asking for trouble if you call a programme The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. Those who don't get the joke will just end up sneering and pointing at the telly wondering how on Earth a horde of evil clowns and obvious stereotypes can constitute the stuff of legends.
Interestingly, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy isn't that highly regarded by the fans either. It's not languishing in the company of Time And The Rani just yet, but it doesn't figure among the fans when they're asked to choose the greatest Doctor Who story of all time. Even the DVD release hasn't surfaced yet.
For my money though, Greatest Show is not only one of the best of the McCoy years, it's also one of the best Who stories period.
The Greatest Show In The Galaxy originally closed Doctor Who's anniversary season in late 1988/early 1989, and just for one brief moment,...

Citizen Kane and 2001: A Space Odyssey have had more ink spilled over them, but most of the ideas tossed about are on the money and far less is read into them. Also, those two classics have one big thing going for them that Straw Dogs does not. They are great films. Co-written by Peckinpah and David Zelag Goodman from from Gordon Williams' novel...

Versatile Irish stage actor who became a familiar face across British drama
Before he became a familiar face on television and cinema screens, the outstanding Irish actor Tp McKenna, who has died after a long illness aged 81, bridged the gap between the old and the new Abbey theatres in Dublin. He appeared with the company for eight years during the interim period at the Queen's theatre; the old Abbey burned down in 1951, the new one opened by the Liffey in 1966.
During that time he made his reputation as a leading actor of great charm, vocal resource – with a fine singing voice – and versatility. He was equally adept at comedy and tragedy, a great exponent of the best Irish playwriting from Jm Synge and Séan O'Casey to Hugh Leonard and Brian Friel. The elder son in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night was a favourite, much acclaimed role.
