Vicky Krieps and Viggo Mortensen are unleashing original Western film “The Dead Don’t Hurt” this fall festival season.
Slated as a feminist take on the genre, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” is premiering at 2023 TIFF and marks lead star Mortensen’s sophomore effort as a director following his 2020 debut “Falling.” The logline for “The Dead Don’t Hurt” teases that Mortensen and Krieps “try and survive the corruption in a tough Nevada town” in the 1860s. Mortensen writes, directs, and acts in the film centered on two immigrants forging a new life on the frontier.
The full synopsis reads: “French-Canadian flower seller Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) and Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) meet in San Francisco. Vivienne is irreverent, fiercely independent, and refuses to wed, but agrees to travel with Holger to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada. Take a look at more new footage from writer, director David Cronenberg's latest feature, "Crimes of the Future" opening May 25, 2022:
"...in a not-so-distant future, when humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings, their biological makeup has changed, with many humans having adapted to life with 'Accelerated Evolution Syndrome' thanks to specialized equipment that aids in everything from eating to sleeping.
"Beloved performance artist 'Saul Tenser' sleeps in a womb-like bed suspended in mid-air. The 'OrchidBed', as it’s called, comes complete with software to anticipate and adjust his every bodily need. The machine even detects the growth of new organs, which Saul’s creative partner 'Caprice' can observe and tattoo in his personal operating theater.
"Together, Saul and Caprice ghoulishy turn the discovery and removal of these new body organs into performance art, via sold-out voyeuristic surgical shows using a sarcophagus-like machine where the surgeries take place.

Berlinale Talents Alumni Prepare to Shine in Cannes
It’s slowly edging towards summer here in Berlin and that means one thing: Cannes is close! And as the sun gets ever brighter, many of Berlinale’s former Talents are also preparing to dazzle on the Croisette!
Three alumni are starring in films in Competition; Sherwan Haji in Tarik Saleh’s Boy from Heaven, Sara Fazilat in Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider, which was produced by Sol Bondy and Jacob Jarek, and finally Nadia Litz joins the glittering cast of David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future. Also in Competition is Lukas Dhont’s Close, co-written by Angelo Tijssens. Un Certain Regard provides a stage for more Talents to shine, with 17 alumni involved in 9 films, including Ariel Escalante’s Domingo y la niebla, to name one example. The film was edited by Lorenzo Mora Salazar, music composed by Alberto Torres, with Nicolás Wong Díaz acting as both producer & cinematographer. Abinash Bikram Shah’s Lori screens in the Short Films Competition, alongside two films with Zuolong Shan as executive producer, Bi Gan’s A Short Story and Story Chen’s The Water Murmurs.
Critic’s Week features 11 former Talents who have contributed their creativity to 8 films in the selection. The Woodcutter Story was in fact developed at our Script Station by writer and director Mikko Myllylahti, edited by Jussi Rautaniemi and produced by Jussi Rantamäki, the short Cuerdas was shot by Lara Vilanova and there will also be a special screeing of Goutte d’Or, produced by Jean-Christophe Reymond.
Excitingly, the Director’s Fortnight will show the debut feature films of three Talents alumni: Manuela Martelli’s 1976, edited by Camila Mercadal and produced by Dominga Sotomayor, Elena López Riera’s El agua and Pamfir by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk. Included in the selection is Un Varón by Fabian Hernández, which Louise Bellicaud produced.

Dedicated to Discovery
The 17th edition of Talents Buenos Aires took place from April 19–23. Borrowing from Luis López Carrasco’s film of the same name, this year’s theme was ‘The Year of Discovery’. Drawing inspiration from the film’s exploration of Spain’s political and social crisis in the early 1990s, the programme’s aim was to promote critical and aesthetic thinking regarding recent world events and their influence on the film world. It was an engaging 5 days of events for the 55 Talents from all over South America, from workshops on non-traditional distribution with Maui Alena or on acting with Maria Laura Berch, to a dialogue on cinema as discovery with Darío Aguirre, and plenty of networking sessions. Welcome to the skilled film professionals who are now part of the Talents family, and congratulations to the team of Talents Buenos Aires on another great edition.
The preparations for Talents Guadalajara in June, Talents Durban in July and Talents Sarajevo in August are currently in full swing, and further out on the horizon, the 13th Talents Tokyo will be held from October 31 to November 5 within the Tokyo FILMeX Festival 2022.
Thanks for staying tuned and catching up!

David Cronenberg, the master of body horror and discomfiting cinema, is back for the first time in eight years with “Crimes of the Future.” The film, a typical Cronenbergian offering that combines science-fiction with the director’s unique point-of-view, is set to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May before it bows theatrically via Neon in June. To celebrate the news, Neon released a new trailer for “Crimes of the Future” on Thursday.

We are mere days away from being in the year of a new David Cronenberg movie. With filming having wrapped in Greece on Crimes of the Future––his sci-fi drama starring Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, and Yorgos Karamichos––the director is now in the editing room and new plot details have arrived. While the film borrows the name from his early 1970s feature, the story is completely different, featuring a script Cronenberg wrote two decades.
“It’s set in a world where people have evolved to a point where we don’t feel physical pain,” Stewart tells Screen Daily. “Sex has changed quite a bit, and the new art form is growing organs. Viggo [Mortensen] is a famous performance artist. Léa Seydoux is his partner who tattoos these organs and displays them. My character becomes enamoured with Viggo’s artist.

As we speak, a new David Cronenberg film is in production, marking the Canadian master’s long-awaited return after 2014’s Maps to the Stars. Crimes of the Future, starring Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, and Yorgos Karamichos, borrows the name from his early 1970 feature but with a new plot. Now, thanks to a snap from the Greece set, the first look of Seydoux has arrived.
“As we begin filming Crimes Of The Future, just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible,” said Mortensen. “We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. This week, FilmBuff releases writer/director Nadia Litz’s atmospheric mystery thriller, The People Garden, in Los Angeles theaters and on VOD. The story follows a young woman named Sweetpea (Dree Hemingway) into the depths of a Japanese forest as she looks for her missing rock star boyfriend, who vanished from the set of a music video that he put together at the last minute.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Litz about what inspired The People Garden, collaborating with her cast on the project, what she learned from making The People Garden, and more.
Great to speak with you today, Nadia. I’m really fascinated by the Suicide Forest, so I thought this was a really interesting take on that environment. Was this something that you just tried to go in and explore, or was it something you researched? I'm curious what the draw was for you.

Gus Van Sant’s latest film “The Sea of Trees” prominently features the Aokigahara forest, popularly known as “The Suicide Forest” because of its reputation as one of the most popular suicide spots in the world. However, Van Sant isn’t the only director with a film that explores the mystery and danger of the Suicide Forest. First there was the supernatural horror film “The Forest,” and now there’s Nadia Litz’s latest film “The People Garden.”
The film follows Sweetpea (Dree Hemingway), a young woman who travels to Japan to break up with her rocker boyfriend Jamie (François Arnaud). But when she arrives, Jamie is nowhere to be found and was last seen shooting a music video at the base of the Aokigahara forest. Sweetpea resolves to find him with the help of local ranger Mak (Jai West), but she soon discovers a mystery far larger than she anticipated.

You wait for a Hollywood movie to feature the legendary Japanese forest known as Aokigahara – Aka the suicide forest – and suddenly three arrive (almost) at once. The first two, The Sea of Trees and the Natalie Dormer-fronted horror pic The Forest, ultimately failed to impress. But third time’s a charm, right?
The latest movie to take place under the shadow of Mt. Fiji is The People Garden, Nadia Litz’s character-driven drama that follows Dree Hemingway into the bowels of Aokigahara. Having made the long trip to Japan to severe ties with her rock star boyfriend Jamie, Hemingway’s Sweetpea is a woman on a mission, but our lead character soon begins to suspect something is amiss when her significant other is nowhere to be found.

Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70 films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!
Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! So be sure to keep an eye out for...

Hollywoodnews.com: “You’re Next,” Adam Wingard’s horror thriller about a family terrorized my masked intruders, on the Best Picture award at this year’s Fantastic Fest, which hosted thousands of genre-film fans in Austin, Texas.
The year’s fest opened with a screening of Tom Six’s “Human Centipede” sequel, and featured a regional premiere of Morgan Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope.”
Both “Next” and “Hope” played the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month before stopping in Austin. “Next” practically swept the Horror category at the festival, grabbing Director for Wingard, Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett, and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson. Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.
The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.
Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.
