- Has four children, all sons. Matthew was born in 1966 and Adam in 1970, from his first marriage to Lynda Sperry. Twins, Andrew and Robert were born in 1986 from his second marriage to Mary Ann.
- Inducted by Elton John into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Beach Boys) on 20 January 1988.
- Was extremely athletic in high school. He was a shot putter and also played on the football team.
