After three seasons, it should be easier to cast the kids of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” but Emmy-nominated casting director Wendy O’Brien says that the show’s popularity has made it tougher.
“It’s a struggle to find and vet young actors that don’t have a lot of experience. Especially when you’re talking about a kindergarten class,” admits O’Brien, who took home the gold two years ago for the same show.
While a 5-or 6-year-old might not have much acting experience under their belt, O’Brien says the upside to the series and its success is that she has seen an uptick in the number of kids being submitted for her consideration.
“A lot of them are auditioning in nice blue collared shirts, already in character. We’re definitely seeing more newcomers trying out,” she says.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Meryl Streep is entering the “Only Murders in the Building” episode “Grab Your Hankies” as her 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. The episode aired on August 15 and is the third one of the third season of the Hulu series.
In “Grab Your Hankies,” Loretta (Streep) lands a role on the Los Angeles-based “Grey’s New Orleans Family Burn Unit,” which would require her to drop out of Oliver’s (Martin Short) play, now revamped into a musical called “Death Rattle Dazzle!” Oliver agrees to let her out of her contract if she sings the Nanny’s lullaby for the producers, Donna (Linda Emond) and Cliff (Wesley Taylor). Loretta’s moving performance of “Look for the Light” stuns Donna and Cliff, who agree to finance the musical, forcing Loretta to stay. Loretta and Oliver then kiss.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Death and Other Details‘ Season Finale, “Chilling.”] And just like that, a seafaring “whodunnit?” became an icy “to whom have they dunnit to know?!” In the final hour of Hulu‘s stylish, sassy, and serpentine mystery dramedy, a lot happened: We learned who killed Katherine Collier (Jayne Atkinson), saw Imogene (Violett Beane) turn the tables on her evil mom Kira, aka Viktor Sams, aka Agent Hilde Eriksen (Linda Emond) and send her to prison for the murders of half the guests on the ship, witnessed the darkest turn yet for Imogene’s former bestie Anna (Lauren Patten) and got the setup for a potential Season 2. More importantly, we were given our potential heroes for the next mystery. In the episode’s last moments, Imogene and three of her fellow doomed cruise survivors—defamed journalist Leila (Pardis Saremi), ship doyenne Teddy (Angela Zhou), and sexy Af ex-con-slash-head of security Jules (Hugo Diego Garcia)—stumbled ...

Imogene Scott is determined to find the killer in Death and Other Details, but she always ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Episode 3, debuting January 23 on Hulu, Violett Beane‘s amateur sleuth gets caught trying to break into yacht owner Sunil’s (Rahul Kohli) safe at the direction of the has-been detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin). TV Insider has an exclusive first look at the moment in the clip above. The hunt for Keith Trubitsky’s (Michael Gladis) killer is on in Episode 3. Interpol Agent Hilde Eriksen (Linda Emond) arrives and takes over the investigation in the installment. Rufus and Imogene stealthily investigate Collier Mills with Sunil’s help. Meanwhile, Anna (Lauren Patten) does her best to get the billion-dollar deal with the Chuns back on track. In the clip above, Imogene tries to turn this would-be-incriminating moment into a pitch to get Sunil involved in her and Rufus’ investigation.

“Pay attention: Details matter,” growls a heavily accented Mandy Patinkin as detective Rufus Cotesworth in the opening seconds of “Death and Other Details,” created by Heidi Cole McAdams and Mike Weiss. There’s more to the quote — hours, and hours, in fact, of droll monologues about perception and detection throughout the series — but Hulu and ABC Signature’s new show appears to have skimped heavily on attention to detail, resulting in a product so shallow, so ramshackle, that it borders on unwatchable.
To its detriment, “Death and Other Details” is not as much about Rufus Cotesworth (a character who will only be referred to by his delightful full name throughout this piece), but about Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), who met him as a child while he was investigating her mother’s death. The orphaned Imogene was taken in by the Colliers, a family of the kind of wealth that outwardly...

“Memory is a motherfucker,” detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) declares in Hulu’s Death and Other Details. Humans, he means, are prone to accidental forgetfulness, self-indulgence, and, on occasion, trauma-driven memory loss. How, then, will Rufus, the so-called “World’s Greatest Detective,” crack a case that relies on both his own and witnesses’ memories over the last 20 years?
The inciting incident is the murder of entitled richling Keith Trubitsky (Michael Gladis) aboard a luxury ocean liner, establishing an Agatha Christie-style closed circle of suspects, as the killer must be on the ship. Trubitsky, it turns out, was invited as a friend of the Colliers, whose family business is on the brink of financial ruin. They chartered the boat as a last-ditch attempt to schmooze potential investors, the Chun family, who’ve hired Rufus to do due diligence.
Rufus has his own agenda: to finally solve the 20-year-old murder case of the Colliers’ former assistant.

Murder mystery drama Death And Other Details is heading to Disney – and the show even has a new trailer! Have a gander within.
Michael Weiss has been a producer and screenwriter on many successful shows, including Chicago P.D, The Mentalist and the terrific Cobie Smulders private eye comedy drama Stumptown, which sadly only ran for a single series but is well worth watching. It’s currently streaming on Disney .
Weiss is now co-showrunner of Death And Other Details, a murder mystery drama series heading to Hulu in the US and Disney in other territories, including the UK. It looks like a cross between Death On The Nile and The White Lotus, which is a pretty good hybrid if you ask us.

There are so many stars in attendance at the opening night of Appropriate on Broadway!
Jennifer Lawrence, Dakota Fanning, and Rose Byrne are just some of the celebs who walked the carpet at the opening event on Monday (December 18) at the Hayes Theater in New York City.

The Season 3 finale of “Only Murders in the Building” saw the Hulu comedy’s central trio of Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) solve the murder of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), a Hollywood action star whose Broadway debut was cut short by his untimely death.

[This story includes major spoilers from the Only Murders in the Building season three finale.]
Season three of Only Murders in the Building ended with another, well, murder. But this time, the victim will hit close to home for the starring trio, especially for Charles (Steve Martin).
The final moments of the season three finale, “Opening Night,” saw Sazz (Jane Lynch) fall to the floor of Charles’ kitchen after being shot in the chest through the window. It’s probably safe to assume next season’s murderer hoped to take down Martin’s character, but confused him with his longtime stunt double. Before the screen cuts to black, Sazz is seen attempting to write something on Charles’ colorful floor with blood from her chest.
While fans will have to wait until Only Murders in the Building season four — which was announced Tuesday morning — to see who wants to kill Charles and why, showrunner John Hoffman teased what...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Opening Night,” the Season 3 finale of “Only Murders in the Building.”
“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 sees Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) work together to uncover who may have wanted to kill Ben, and the list is long.
Ben, the star of Oliver’s new Broadway play, was hated by a lot of people. As it turns out, that includes Charles, who punched Ben across the face right before opening night. It also includes Loretta, played by Meryl Streep, who is secretly the biological mother of Ben’s manager and adopted brother, Dickie (Jeremy Shamos). And there’s Dickie himself, the overshadowed creator of the movie franchise that made Ben famous.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Episode 10, “Opening Night.”]
If you’ll allow a dreadful detective a brief moment to savor his sagacity: I absolutely called the cookie thing.
Yes, technically, the poisoned Schmackary’s pastry was part of the penultimate episode’s big reveal — when the murder board’s accusatory tacks jumped from Loretta (Meryl Streep) to Donna (Linda Emond) — but it also bears weight for the finale’s last twist and helps explain how well said twist lands with viewers.
Back when we first saw the recording of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) talking to an offscreen someone (or something), his chosen words sounded a little too particular. “I want you so fucking bad,” he says, “but we both know you’ll ruin my career.” Based only on his few choice scenes in the premiere, what does Ben want? Cookies. What can’t he have? Also, cookies. (He’s...

And thus ends another chapter of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building with a killer reveal and a fresh new murder mystery yet to unravel. Season 3 is currently available to stream in its entirety via the streamer.
The big mystery as to who killed Ben Gilroy (Paul Rudd) was resolved and it’s almost always the person you least expect—at least it was for me. I hardly paid any mind to this character and secretly wanted it to be the talented and mysterious Loretta Durkin the entire time out of pure selfishness so we could spend more time with Meryl Streep in Season 4.
Alas, Ben’s killer was none other than Cliff DeMeo (Wesley Taylor). Cliff and his mother Donna DeMeo (Linda Emond) co-produced Oliver’s (Martin Short) big Broadway return—you know,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building, Season 3, Episode 10, “Opening Night.”] Only Murders in the Building has uncovered its Season 3 murderer, solving the mystery behind Ben Glenroy’s (Paul Rudd) untimely death. As it turns out, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) theory that producer Donna DeMeo (Linda Emond) was responsible for poisoning Ben was accurate but not a fully-baked theory. Sure, she provided Ben with a Schmakary’s cookie sprinkled with rat poison, but her son Clifford DeMeo (Wesley Taylor) gave Ben the final push down an elevator shaft at the Arconia. At first, Donna confesses to it all, claiming she killed Ben, but Mabel notices the protective nature of her confession, which includes the fact that she’d only intended to knock Ben out after reading a bad review for the play. Realizing Donna initially intended to protect her son, Mabel observes the mother-son duo from afar,...

Who killed Paul Rudd? That was the number one question on Only Murders in the Building all season long, as the Hulu murder mystery comedy launched viewers into its third season with the star-studded slaying of special guest star Rudd as superstar Ben Glenroy. In its third season, Only Murders in the Building continues to strive to balance the genuine intrigue of a murder mystery with a light satire of true-crime culture and whodunit clichés. The results are consistently amusing but hardly as riveting as other iterations of this subgenre—including Poker Face and the previous two seasons of Only Murders in the Building.
The show’s unlikely trio of amateur sleuths—washed-up TV star Charles Haden Savage (Steve Martin), disgraced Broadway director Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and rudderless millennial Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez)—had sworn to only investigate murders that take place in their high-end Manhattan apartment complex, but last season’s coda teased a challenge to their agreement: a murder outside the building! Fall TV is about to get pinched. The ongoing SAG and WGA strikes have, as intended, disrupted an industry in need of disruption. Some series are being delayed. Others have been pushed off the calendar entirely. Even with what we will see in the coming months, the AMPTP’s greed is forcing a workforce that loves a hot mic to keep quiet about the shows they make possible. While it’s nothing compared to the highway robbery Hollywood executives are trying to get away with when it comes to not paying talent, audiences are still about to lose out on something special.
All this is to say: Curse the studios for making the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 press tour impossible — aka killing a parade of interviews where everyone gets to share fresh, funny, and insightful stories about Meryl Fucking Streep.
Thankfully, what’s onscreen stands just fine on its own.

“Only Murders in the Building”? More like only murders in the theater. Hulu finally dropped the Season 3 trailer of the murder mystery on Wednesday, giving us a glimpse of Meryl Streep and more Paul Rudd in action.
Season 3 finds Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) investigating the death of Ben Glenroy (Rudd), an actor in Oliver’s play “Death Rattle,” co-starring Charles, who collapsed on stage on opening night in the final moments of the Season 2 finale.
“My show is hanging by a thread here,” Oliver tells Mabel in the trailer. “Finding this killer is the only way you’ll have a show,” she replies.
