- US senator from Kentucky (6 November 1946 - 3 January 1949; 5 November 1952 - 3 January 1955; 7 November 1956 - 3 January 1973). For each term as senator, he initially won a special election. The first occurred after Albert 'Happy' Chandler resigned to become commissioner of baseball. The others took place after a US senator died in office.
