- Served in Burma with the British Army during World War II.
- Oxford University-educated, he first worked for the publishing firm Macmillan, acting in his spare time as an amateur with the Tower Theatre Company. In the late 1960's, he was offered a part in a BBC TV production and subsequently performed in repertory. From the mid-1970's, he acted in character roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the Bristol Old Vic, the Oxford Playhouse and at the Chichester Festival. Was best known on screen for his role as the pirate Wyvern in the first two instalments of "Pirates of the Caribbean".
