Exclusive: Spenser Granese (Dope Thief) is the newest addition to the cast of Marty Supreme, director Josh Safdie’s new film for A24, starring Timothée Chalamet, sources tell Deadline.
Character details are under wraps, as with the film’s plot, though the project supposedly takes loose inspiration from the story of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman. Sources close to the production have stressed, at the same time, that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic.
Pic’s eclectic ensemble also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, musician Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Production is currently underway, with Safdie working from his script written with Ronald Bronstein. The duo produces alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24.

Andra Day will join season two of Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Athena, the network announced Sunday.
Day’s Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, is the mother of Annabeth Chase (played Leah Sava Jeffries) in Rick Riordan’s wildly popular teen book series.
“I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors,” Day said in a video statement after Disney announced the news. “Stay tuned for this epic journey y’all.”

Exclusive: A24’s Timothée Chalamet movie Marty Supreme, about ping-pong prodigy Marty Reisman, is one of the few blue-chip movies on offer at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas. It’s also shaping up to be the most expensive.
Word from buyers this past week has been that the movie — which is filming in New York — comes with an eyebrow raising $90M budget. We hear that’s exaggerated, however, and that $70M gross is more accurate.
That still makes the project the most expensive new package on sale at this year’s AFM and makes it A24’s joint most-expensive production to date alongside Dwayne Johnson starrer The Smashing Machine, which is in post-production (and is another ‘sports biopic’ that doesn’t obviously scream big-budget). Both movies are directed by a Safdie brother: Marty Supreme by Josh, and Smashing Machine by Benny. Both previously teamed on A...

Uncovering the Original Dark Script of ‘Ghostbusters’: How a Grimmer Vision Evolved into the Beloved Comedy Classic! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
“Ghostbusters” went from a dark, ambitious script to a comedic classic that’s haunted our hearts since ‘84. When Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis teamed up to create this film, they tapped into Aykroyd’s deep-seated fascination with the paranormal. Growing up in a family with a history steeped in spiritualism, Aykroyd was practically destined to explore the ghostly unknown. His great-grandfather hosted séances, and his upbringing was rich with tales of the supernatural.
Originally titled Ghost Smashers, Aykroyd’s vision was wild, sprawling across multiple dimensions and brimming with supernatural phenomena. Picture this: an open portal unleashing ghosts on Earth, leading to various teams of “ghost smashers” battling for supremacy. And we’re not talking about a cozy little New York firehouse to house their captured spirits; no, these...

Timothée Chalamet was in good company during a visit with fans this weekend, where he was more than likely asked to call them by his name.
On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.
In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.
Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

For over a century, LGBTQ performers have made audiences laugh while pushing boundaries and advancing social progress. Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution shines a light on this important history, telling the story of pioneers who paved the way for openly queer comedians today.

Through interviews and clips, we learn what it took for these talented individuals to find success despite facing adversity. While acceptance has grown, prejudice has caused many to maintain “double lives” or stay closeted for fear of backlash.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is continuing to round out its cast.
Disney revealed at D23 on Saturday the trio of women who will be playing the Gray Sisters — Sandra Bernhard as Anger, Kristen Schaal as Tempest, and Margaret Cho as Wasp.
In Rick Riordan’s ever-expanding world of mythology, the Gray Sisters are old women who share one eye and one tooth, and they operate a “taxi firm” in New York City. They encounter a few of the main characters after scooping them up while they’re on the run in Sea of Monsters.
Bernhard will portray Anger, the Gray Sister in charge of collecting cab fare from heroes who call upon the taxi. Anger impatiently awaits her turn to use the one eye shared between the Sisters.

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and stand-up Michelle Buteau play two best friends going through pregnancy in this raunchy comedy from actor-turned-director Pamela Adlon. Crackling with comic chemistry, it’s frequently very funny and pulls off what is essentially a clever riff on the usual rom-com dynamic, but it oddly shies away from its potentially emotional moments, preferring to undercut them with laughs instead.
The film is set in present-day New York, where two best friends – single yoga instructor Eden (Glazer) and married-with-a-kid dentist Dawn (Buteau) – still get together regularly, despite now living in different boroughs that are several subway trains apart. As the film begins, they’re indulging in their annual Thanksgiving ritual of attending a movie together, but that’s cut short when heavily...

After a brief fakeout for Independence Day last month, the ladies of “The View” are now officially on summer break. And yes, it’ll be a bit longer until you can return to the table with them again.

The episode also welcomed Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to the show, where he picked apart Donald Trump’s racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris.
But if you’re here, you’re probably wondering when exactly the Season 28 return will be. Well, worry not, we have that answer. It’ll be Tuesday,...

Three decades after sharing the screen with Morgan Fairchild on Roseanne, Sandra Bernhard is apologizing for her less-than-nice behavior toward her scene partner. “You know, it’s one of my biggest regrets that I wasn’t nicer to her,” Bernhard said on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday, June 20, after a viewer asked the comedian about working with Fairchild. “I was a little dismissive of Morgan, and to this day, would like to say to Morgan, you are incredible to work with, you went there. … You’re fabulous, and you are on the right side politically. I owe you an apology. I adore you. And thank you for putting up with my snotty little attitude.” As Bernhard recurred as Nancy Bartlett, a business partner of Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Jackie (Laurie Metcalfe) on the ABC sitcom, Fairchild guest-starred as Nancy’s girlfriend Marla in three episodes in...

In the making since 2019, Page Hurwitz’s new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, taps a throng of queer notables — from Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell and Lily Tomlin to Joel Kim Booster, Fortune Feimster and Bob the Drag Queen — to show how LGBTQ funny people have left their mark and challenged others’ perceptions for more than a century.
“None of these comedians set out to change the world. They set out to make people laugh,” Hurwitz said at the film’s Tribeca Festival premiere ahead of its June 18 streaming debut. “And along the way, they did change the culture and, I think, they changed the world.”
Featuring an intergenerational and diverse cast, the documentary — set against the backdrop of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ Celebration show in 2022 — unpacks what has fueled the cycle of progress and regression that has surrounded the queer comedy community for decades.

In the opening section of Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, you might be forgiven for thinking this is an extended Pride Month promo to breathe new life into Netflix’s 2022 special, Stand Out: An LGBTQ Celebration. But in a Q&a following the rousingly received opening-night screening at the Provincetown Film Festival, director Page Hurwitz clarified the chicken-and-the-egg situation, explaining that she produced the event at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, which assembled 22 prominent queer comics on the same bill, as a foundational building block for this documentary surveying the rich history of LGBTQ comedians.
At a time when a new generation of queer comics from across the sexual and gender identity spectrum has emerged into what appears to be a thriving scene, this is an invaluable primer on the many performers who kicked down resistant doors to make today’s greater representation possible.

“Babes” is a hilarious riff on women friendships/bonding and an unexpected pregnancy. Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) are besties, having grown up together in New York City, and are now firmly in different phases of adulthood. Women are humanities original 3-D printers! We can grow humans inside our bodies. However, that’s just the beginning of the journey of motherhood as things get much more difficult from there. Who better then to portray the ups and downs of raising children than Better Things creator Pamela Adlon, director of Babes and written by half of the Broad City creator duo Ilana Glazer, and co-writer Josh Rabinowitz. The complexities of modern motherdom are mined for both humor and pathos, but despite its noble intentions and moments of insight, the film often veers into the realm of the cringe-worthy rather than crafting the poignant commentary one might hope for from such a talented team.
The story centers on Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), childhood best friends whose lives have diverged yet remain intertwined through their shared experiences of womanhood and growing up in NYC. Dawn, a meticulous dentist...

‘Dare’ (2009): Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, and Ashley Springer Star in ‘Challengers’ for Theater Kids
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Discovering the Power of a Dick… Ahead of Its Time
Non-monogamy became a common topic of conversation this spring as Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” made any mention of pro tennis the conversational equivalent of a three-way sex invite.
On dating apps, searches for “open relationships” continued to rise in popularity just as reality television embraced multi-partnered dynamics through shows like Peacock’s “Couple to Throuple.” Even in 2024, polyamory isn’t outright “mainstream” by any stretch of the imagination(s).
