Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to join the cast of J.J. Abrams’ untitled mystery movie for Warner Bros and his Bad Robot, Deadline has confirmed.
The actor will join an ensemble that also includes Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega and Emma Mackey, as previously announced. Plot details remain under wraps, though we hear this is not a time-travel film, as some have conjectured. Abrams will direct from his own script, with Bad Robot producing.
Currently, Jackson can be seen starring opposite John David Washington in Netflix’s film The Piano Lesson, based on the August Wilson play, reprising his role after working with Washington on a stage adaptation. The film released in select theaters earlier this month and debuts on the streamer tomorrow. Upcoming, he’ll also be seen in the Western The Unholy Trinity opposite Pierce Brosnan, Renny Harlin’s actioner The Beast opposite Joel Kinnaman, action adventure pic Afterburn opposite Dave Bautista,...

Pierce Brosnan felt a personal connection to the story in his new film The Last Rifleman, in which he portrays a nearly 93-year-old World War II veteran grappling with the pain of his past.
“I thought it was such a heartfelt story, and it took me back to a part of Ireland that I didn’t know,” the Ireland-born actor tells The Hollywood Reporter of the movie that filmed in Belfast. “My stepfather was in the Second World War. He was a Scotsman from Glasgow. He talked little of the war, but he was in the tank regiment, and he talked about a particular incident which haunted him.”
Loosely based on the true story of British D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan, The Last Rifleman is now available via on-demand platforms and includes a similarly haunting backstory for Artie Crawford (Brosnan). Following the death of his wife, Artie plans to escape from...

Multiple actors donned the iconic suit to portray the English spy, but no one did it like Daniel Craig. After appearing in five installments of the James Bond franchise, the Casino Royale actor announced his exit from the role.
Fan’s theory and speculations soon began on which actor would be worthy of taking on the mantle, and there was one unanimous decision. The Man of Steel, aka Henry Cavill came out as a winner of the online discourse on the next 007 agent. Although producers of the movie have disintegrated the boundaries of ethnicities for the role, Cavill could still bag the role.

Three years ago, Daniel Craig's time as James Bond came to an end. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga's "No Time to Die" rather boldly gave Craig's version of Bond a proper ending. With that, all eyes are now on the future. Over the last few years, various rumors, suggestions, and bits of speculation have cropped up regarding who will take over as 007 in the next iteration of the legendary franchise. As of now, nothing has been confirmed by Eon Productions or the film's producers. That said, they do know what they're looking for when it comes to finding Craig's successor, and there are a few key requirements.
In a conversation with The Independent, longtime franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli, daughter of the late Albert "Cuddy" Broccoli, and her brother, Michael G. Wilson, spoke about the future of "James Bond" -- specifically, who will play the next Bond on screen. "It's a big decision,...

Despite plenty of rumors about who will succeed Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, an actor has yet to be chosen. However, in a new interview with The Independent, Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson offered some insight into the type of actor they’ll be looking at.
To start, Bond will be played by a man, the Broccolis confirmed, so any talk of Bond being portrayed by woman is inaccurate.
The new actor will likely be in his 30s and must be prepared to commit to the role for at least a decade. While Daniel Craig was 38 when he was cast as Bond, others like Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan were all in their early to mid-40s. This time, it seems the Broccolis are aiming to skew a bit younger.
Lastly, and perhaps most intriguing, the Broccolis wouldn’t rule out casting a person of color.

Tomorrow may never die, but for the cast and crew of Bond #18, it was like every day would never end. Hit with constant script rewrites, testy stars, filming locations pulled at the last second, and a seemingly impossible release target, Tomorrow Never Dies felt like it was panning out to be the sophomore slump that neither Pierce Brosnan nor the 007 franchise needed. And yet, it actually turned into a pretty damn good movie…decades after its release, that is. Appreciated and more relevant now than ever, Tomorrow Never Dies may not have lived up to standards in 1997, but is today considered a key entry in the Brosnan era. So what went on behind the scenes, and how exactly did it get there? Let’s shake it up as we find out: What Happened to This Movie?!
Tomorrow Never Dies was greenlit before the previous Bond installment, 1995’s GoldenEye, even hit theaters.

“The Last Rifleman” is a moving story about memory, loss, and forgiveness set against the soft background of war memories. The movie is set against the 75th anniversary of D-Day and follows Artie Crawford, a 92-year-old World War II veteran from Belfast whose drive is stronger than his weak body might suggest.
Pierce Brosnan gives Artie a lot of depth, going from being a man living in a nursing home to a man on a very personal journey. Artie decides to leave his care facility and go to Normandy, even though doctors and the facility say he shouldn’t because he has recently lost his wife and is having a hard time with the weight of his memories. Maggie, his beloved wife, died recently after a long illness with dementia. She left him with a heavy emotional load and a strong sense of being alone.

Daniel Craig rose to international fame with his role as the fictional spy created by Ian Fleming, James Bond. Until his role in Casino Royale, his most prominent roles were alongside Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and in the Steven Spielberg film Munich. The role of Bond even got him into the Guinness Book of World Records.

An amalgam of a road trip dramedy, an emotional memory piece and a nostalgic look at the glory of World War II, “The Last Rifleman” wants to be many things. Alas, Kevin Fitzpatrick’s script fails to give any of these threads the dramatic heft or the character specification they require. Terry Loane directs all of it with a smooth but rather indifferent hand, unable to overcome the script’s limitations. As the veteran referred to by the title, Pierce Brosnan becomes the main reason to watch.
Brosnan is 92-year-old Artie Crawford, living in a care home in Northern Ireland while having poignant and unsettling flashbacks to World War II, when he fought alongside his best friend and fell in love with the woman he eventually married. Facing the end of life, he decides to go back to Normandy to visit the place that haunts his dreams. Despite the distractingly...

Only a third of people develop dementia as they age, so why do we treat elderly people like children? That 92-year-old-man whose movements are restricted on his daughter’s orders might have faced down shelling and gunfire in his time. It doesn’t seem to occur to his nurses that he still knows a few tricks. Even though they’ve seen him in a suit, at his wife’s funeral, and even though they’ve noticed that occasional gleam in his eye, they never consider that they’re trying to imprison James Bond.
Artie has a history that is all his own, and he doesn’t consider himself a hero, but he does share an actor with Mr Bond – Pierce Brosnan. The Irish star is only 71 but very effectively captures the physicality of someone significantly older and more fragile. He’s had few roles like this over the course of his career,...

The Last Rifleman is one of those films from a genre I have often described as “a movie.” It was made for that lazy Sunday afternoon that makes you appreciate what you have or long for what you don’t. This British war drama, which Sky Films has finally dusted off, is now allowing the rest of the world to see it. This is welcomed because The Last Rifleman is a good genre picture.
That’s because Terry Loane’s (In the Land of Saints and Sinners) The Last Rifleman has a bevy of quality messaging that also happens to be highly entertaining. Along with a touching central performance from a well-known movie star and some cameos from the late John Amos in his last film role, it’s a movie experience that is funny, moving, and, above all else, satisfying.

Like a veteran high roller playing the odds, indie film execs crowding the new Vegas venue at the Palms Casino for this year’s American Film Market are hedging their bets. The independent film business, a risky proposal at the best of times, has becoming increasingly precarious with theatrical releases an all-or-nothing proposal — the jackpot of Longlegs versus the bust of Borderlands and Megalopolis — and buyers hesitant to place their chips on anything that doesn’t look like a sure thing.
For indie movies at the AFM, that means a doubling down on genre films, particularly horror and action, and a move away from drama and comedy titles, which are considered riskier bets internationally.
“People are really focused on genre, even some of the smaller international sales companies are boosting their genre slates,” notes one U.S. seller. “Success has become impossible to predict and everyone is looking for anything that has a built-in audience.

The nineties was the heyday of the mid-level action hero. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal churned out a whole series of increasingly profitable action programmers in the early part of the decade. Seagal’s movies were wildly profitable for Warner Bros, while Van Damme had a home at Universal Pictures. Every studio wanted its own Jcvd or Seagal, with Paramount trying to launch Jeff Speakman with The Perfect Weapon (which has a devoted fan in our own writer Ej Tangonan) and Fox even trying with football player Howie Long in Firestorm. One studio that badly wanted their own action guy was New Line Cinema, but before they found their niche in the genre with Rumble in the Bronx and Mortal Kombat, they tried to launch two promising action heroes. One was Thomas Ian Griffith, whose (pretty awesome) action flick Excessive Force was only given a small regional release.

Lily James and Pierce Brosnan are ready to rock with their reboot of Cliffhanger.
Principal photography commenced in Austria for an updated take on the 1993 film of the same name that starred Sylvester Stallone. Jaume Collet-Serra directs the new movie that is planning a theatrical release and hails from Rocket Science, in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix.
The Cliffhanger reboot centers on mountaineer Ray Cooper (Brosnan), who runs a chalet with his daughter in the Dolomites, a mountain range in Italy. When the pair are kidnapped, older daughter Naomi (James) — still dealing with trauma from a previous climbing incident — must overcome her past to save her family.
Stallone was announced last year as starring in the reboot but has since exited the project, as has previously announced director Ric Roman Waugh.
Rounding out the cast are Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery.

Ordinarily I groan when hearing about yet another inferior reboot of a good movie, but Cliffhanger is the kind of concept that’s hard to mess up. The original 1993 thriller was pretty simple: there are lots of cliffs, and people hanging from them. You throw in bad guys and people who want to throw our heroes over the edge for the entire picture and you get a gripping evening. If you did it again and just stuck to the same basic elements, it should still work. Cliffhanger is also one of the more well-known pictures in the career of macho man Sylvester Stallone, and since the man is still kicking, it’s conceivable he could play a part or at least a cameo…at least, that’s what one would think. But though there were initial plans to fit him in somewhere, a “creative overhaul” has resulted in his departure.

Brace yourselves, movie audiences: a new “Cliffhanger” movie is on the way. But the upcoming reboot isn’t the same concept that once had Sylvester Stallone returning and Ana Lily Amirpour attached to direct. It turns out Stallone isn’t back after all, and Amirpour’s out behind the camera, although her all-female story is still the basis of the script.

A “Cliffhanger” follow-up keeps on rolling. But now in a much different configuration.
Rocket Science in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix has announced that filming is underway on “Cliffhanger,” a reboot of the 1993 action extravaganza that starred Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow. This new version stars Lily James and Pierce Brosnan and is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour.
A proposed follow-up to “Cliffhanger” dates back to 1994, when TriStar announced “Cliffhanger 2: The Dam,” with Stallone returning. For years it sat fallow until 2019, when Amirpour was hired and Jason Momoa was earmarked to star. In 2023 it was re-announced as a legacy sequel, with Stallone set to return under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh. Mark Bianculli wrote that version of the script. Later in 2023, Jean-François Richet was hired to replace Waugh.

A reboot of Sylvester Stallone’s action classic “Cliffhanger” is currently in production, but the film will look a lot different from the package initially announced nearly 18 months ago.
Stallone will no longer star in the update meant to be directed by Ric Roman Waugh (“Greenland”) from a script by Mark Bianculli (“Hunters”). A creative overhaul has meant that actor Lily James will take on the lead role. Pierce Brosnan will co-star and Jaume Collet-Serra will direct. The project hails from Rocket Science in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix.
Filming is underway in Austria with a buzzy supporting cast, including: Nell Tiger Free, festival darling Franz Rogowski (“Passages”), Shubham Saraf (“Shantaram”), Assaad Bouab (“Franklin”), Suzy Bemba (“Poor Things”) and Bruno Gouery, a breakout star of the Netflix hit “Emily in Paris.”

With the recent (extremely disappointing) release of "Joker: Folie a Deux," there is nothing standing between the old DC and the new DC Universe, which kicks off later this year when the animated "Creature Commandos" arrives on Max. Then DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans kick into high gear next summer when Gunn's new "Superman" movie hits theaters. What are those plans, exactly? An ever-growing list of movies and TV shows has already been confirmed, and put simply, the DC Universe is getting a reboot. Unfortunately, there is still some confusion for the time being.
The easiest thing would be for Warner Bros. and DC Studios to say "we're starting over completely fresh. Nothing from the former Dceu counts, but everything going forward does." Unfortunately, it's not so simple. Certain projects that were in the works before are going to be ushered in as part of the future.

Aaron Kaufman, the Emmy-nominated director behind Superpower, Sean Penn’s Paramount documentary about the Ukraine-Russia war, has died at the age of 51.
Deadline confirmed the news with Chad Verdi of Verdi Productions, who financed and executive produced some of Kaufman’s previous and upcoming projects, including Superpower. He died in Las Vegas of an apparent heart attack on Thursday.
Kaufman is perhaps best known for co-helming Superpower alongside Penn, and the effort translated into a News & Documentary Emmy nod in the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category. Pierce Brosnan is finally getting to play “richer characters,” he told Variety.
“I tell my sons: ‘Work gets work.’ I’ve been a working actor all my life and I’ve managed to create a body of work that, I think, is entertaining and substantial. There are some wonderful jewels within it.”
Richard Gray, his director on western “The Unholy Trinity,” agreed: “Pierce’s a ridiculously good actor. Lately, he’s been doing some really good stuff. He’s had a string of films that aren’t out yet and they will show him in many different lights. Over the next 10 years, he’ll be very acclaimed.”
Brosnan has been a “great supporter” of the movie, now set to close Zurich Film Festival, which sees him square off against Samuel L. Jackson.
“Working with Pierce and Sam was a dream come true. I grew up watching these guys: they are legends.
