An unlucky, womanizing high schooler becomes the unwilling target of a vivacious alien girl"s affections after winning an interplanetary game of tag against her.

A mysterious and powerful alien girl, Elle, sends invitations to all of Ataru"s friends to attend her wedding ceremony to non other than Ataru himself, to the surprise of everyone, and to the rage of Lum, Ataru"s possessive alien lover.

The night before the school festival, things seem to be repeating themselves. Gradually, all the world functions come to a stop, the only ones that are not affected are a select group of student friends.

A curse placed on Lum as an infant manifests itself in the present day, causing her to be taken to another dimension. Lum"s husband, Ataru Moroboshi is turned into a hippo, and attempts to find Lum with the help of her friends.

Mendou invites Ataru & Co. to his estate for a viewing of a large, aging cherry tree named "Tarozakura", which is to be featured in an independent film which happens to be financed by Mendou, directed by Megane, and starring Lum. During filming, Ataru cuts down Tarozakura as called for in the script, but the downed tree starts foaming and disintegrates. Afterwards, bizarre incidents occur all over Tomobiki, a mountain emerges out of the ground, spring gives way to winter, Sakura"s ghostly friends disappear, Lum begins losing her powers, and Lum"s friends begin acting as though she doesn"t exist.

Ataru and Lum must replay their fateful game of tag to decide the fate of Earth, that"s being threatened by giant space mushrooms, as well as their relationship.

Lupica, another one of the legion of space princesses that all seem to have found out about Earth in some tour book, appears and abducts Ataru. Needless to say, Lum, assisted by her friends Oyuki and Benten, gives chase. Also needless to say, Lupica isn"t after Ataru for his great looks or charming personality (because he doesn"t have either). Lupica"s goal is the greatest love potion in the galaxy, which she intends to use to seduce her sweetheart to tie the knot. To get it, she needs the possessor of the greatest lust in the universe. It is summertime, and Shinobu laments not having a boyfriend. She then happens upon a young man weak from hunger, and wearing a rabbit costume. She gives him a carrot, he expresses his gratitude by hitting on her... and she hits back. The young man leaves behind a key to another dimension where everybody"s possible futures exist. Lum and Ataru join Shinobu to find the bunny boy, and happy futures for themselves.

Lum & her girlfriends are invited to Neptune by Oyuki. There she shows them her new business venture at a ranch of flying sherbets, birds capable of producing sherbet cones from their beaks. Ran convinces Oyuki to let her borrow one, her goal is to make some quick cash selling sherbets on Earth. Unfortunately, the combination of being overworked and a hot summer day has made the sherbet extremely cranky, even from its refrigerated cage. It breaks from its cage and escapes, but not before attacking Ran and Lum, and trashing Benten"s brand-new bike by shooting sherbet cones at it. Now it"s up to Ran to retrieve the sherbet before Benten blasts it out of the sky, and more importantly, before Oyuki finds out.

Lum, Ataru, Shinobu and Mendo are invited to a small island where Mr Fujinami and Ryunnosuke have relocated and reopened their Hama Tea Shop. Once there, Fujinami explains that he purchased the shop from an old family friend, who disappeared along with his daughter, Nagisa. One evening, the group are scared by a pair of ghosts, who turn out to be the spirits of Fujinami"s friend and his daughter. The two ghosts explain that they were trying to make a new dish using sea urchin, but due to poisoning, both died. It is also revealed that the friend"s daughter Nagisa, was to become Ryunnosuke"s wife. Ryunnosuke refuses, and confesses to her Father"s friend that she cannot wed Nagisa, since she isn"t a boy, but a girl. Strangely enough, this does not deter the friend or Fujinami from trying to get them together. Though the fact that she is a ghost is soon changed when a sea urchin comes ashore, and sheds a tear. Nagisa swallows the tear, and becomes human again. Meanwhile, the others have noted something strange: Ataru and Shutaro are generally attracted to girls, yet neither has attempted to make a pass at Nagisa. Finally unable to take it anymore, Ryunnosuke shows Nagisa her bandage-wrapped chest to show that she"s a girl. This is compounded by an even bigger shock when Nagisa reveals that she is actually a he, but simply dresses as a girl with a girlish voice. As dawn comes, Nagisa"s father"s spirit disappears, but Nagisa remains, attempting to chase after Ryunnosuke.

Based on a hit manga by Takahashi Rumiko, this is a romantic comedy about the relationship of Otonashi Kyoko, the beautiful widow and manager of a boarding house and Godai Yusaku, a poor student tenant.

Godai tries to figure out what to do with his life after college while competing with Kyoko"s impossibly perfect tennis coach for her affection.
