Scornfully, Flint decides to sell out and go to Australia, leaving the Christians at the mercy of the nabob. When the village is set afire, Lola implores Flint to call for aid; he fights the ship"s crew; Haynes is mortally wounded; Lola, in desperation, prays for guidance; and Flint succeeds in communicating with marines, who quell the uprising.

On an island in the South Seas, derelict Tony Heritage is rescued from savage natives by trader and ship captain Rod McLean, but repays him by stealing Rod"s money and fleeing to France. There, Heritage marries a young French woman named Joie Malet, but her father, Captain Jean Malet, having discovered his miscreant past, snatches Joie from the altar stairs and takes her to a South Sea island where he has been posted. Tony Heritage follows, but Capt. Malet keeps him away from Joie by giving him a job on another island, helping Rod McLean build a new trading post. In the meantime, McLean has fallen in love with Joie, but withdraws when he learns she is married. Returning to his trading post, McLean is confronted by drunken, angry natives who burned down the local church after Heritage incited them with liquor. John Strickland, the minister, prevents McLean from harming his old nemesis, but when Heritage steals McLean"s boat and flees to an outgoing steamship, the incensed trader chases him, and Strickland follows to prevent further mayhem. During the pursuit, a violent storm hits, and Tony Heritage"s death allows McLean to return to his island trading post and marry Joie.

Tired of her friends and life as a society leader, Ninon Le Compte goes north to the Hudson Bay area to inspect trapping holdings inherited from her uncle. Frederick Van Court, who frequently proposes to her, and Flora O"Hare accompany her. Lazar, the Canadian manager of the post, openly desires both the company and Ninon for himself and sets fire to the warehouse when Ninon sends him away. When Ninon, Frederick, and Lawatha catch up with Lazar, he makes advances to Ninon; Frederick defends her and is seriously hurt. Lazar and Lawatha kill each other, and Ninon and Frederick survive the difficult return journey to find a happy future.

While traveling in Europe Philip Quentin encounters his former sweetheart, Dorothy Garrison, and finds that she is now engaged to Prince Ugo Ravorelli, whom Philip recognizes as the man wanted for a murder in Brazil. Philip avoids being trapped by Prince Ugo into a fatal duel, then kidnaps Dorothy at her wedding. Pietro later learns that Jerry is a government agent and kidnaps him, hiding him on Peggy"s boat. Making a delivery to the mainland, the boat is then attacked by hijackers led by Pietro, who wound Peggy and take her boat, leaving behind Jerry and Peggy. Taking the hijackers" craft to a small island, Jerry sends a radio message for help to Peggy"s father, a cashiered naval officer; Pietro intercepts the radio message, goes to the island, and forces Peggy and Jerry aboard the rum-runner. Peggy manages to send an S. O. S. signal to a U. S. warship before Pietro dynamites the boat. Peggy and Jerry survive the explosion and are picked up by a Navy warship; Pietro is captured, and Jerry uses his influence to have the elder O"Day cleared of the false charges that led to his disgrace. Peggy and Jerry make plans to be wed.

During a trip to Europe, society girl Chaddie Green discovers that she is destitute. She returns to the United States and meets Duncan MacKail, who is equally broke, except for a parcel of grainland in the Western plains. After the two are married, Duncan hires Ollie, a Swedish caretaker, who Chaddie finds intimidating. While Duncan is away on business, Chaddie travels fifteen miles to visit Percy Woodhouse, an Englishman who has become ill. Her horse runs away, and she is forced to spend the night. Although she sleeps under a wagon, Duncan is nevertheless angry and jealous. Chaddie moves Percy into her home to nurse him back to health, hoping his presence will restrain the violent Ollie. Duncan leaves in a fit of jealousy, but he soon returns with a servant named Olga as a peace offering. She and Percy fall in love, while Ollie hangs himself, leaving a note confessing to his murderous instincts. Chaddie and Duncan become parents and find happiness in their prairie home.

American sculptress Adele La Rue, working in Paris, lacks the inspiration to create a masterpiece, until Jean Ballard, a wild apache leader, takes refuge from the police in her apartment. Adele saves him from capture on the condition that he pose as the model for one of her works. Adele and Jean fall in love, finding happiness with each other until Marie, Jean"s former love, insults him by telling him he is no better than a rich woman"s lap dog. Jean returns to the underworld and becomes involved in a gang war with a rival gang, the Wolves. Looking for Jean, Adele goes to a cafe he is known to frequent, where she is abducted by the Wolves. When Jean comes to rescue her, he is also captured. The Wolves heat knives with which to torture the reunited lovers, but before they can be used, the police arrive and open fire on the Wolves" hideout. During the excitement, Marie, who has joined the Wolves, repents of her hate and releases Adele and Jean. They jump from an open window just as the hideout is destroyed by artillery fire. Jean decides to repent, and the lovers look forward to a romantic future together.

Disguising herself as a masked bandit, Catalina, the ward of the governor of a Spanish province, avenges injustice, aids the poor, and plots a revolution. Hugh Winthrop, a young American who owns mines in the province, comes to inspect them and is kidnapped by Catalina, who suspects him of being an enemy of the people. He escapes but meets Catalina later at the governor"s palace, where they are arrested for stealing state papers. Catalina escapes, and Hugh is sentenced to be executed. As he is standing before the firing squad, Catalina and her followers ride in and save him. The governor, who was responsible for many of the province"s ills, is convicted; and Hugh and Catalina are united.
