Visitor Services

Visitor Services is located right inside the gift shop. It is open every day. Services include first aid, the reuniting of separated/lost individuals, our lost and found department, as well as information on Great Plains Zoo and Butterfly House & Aquarium memberships, donations, seasonal shows/events, etc.

Restrooms

Restrooms are located in the zoo lobby and in the ROAR Café. Family restrooms and The Nest, a comfort room for families who need to nurse or have a private moment, are located across from the gift shop. 

Child Strollers

Strollers are available to rent from the zoo’s gift shop. $5 for a single stroller and $7 for a double stroller. Strollers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Photo I.D. required.

Motorized Scooters

Motorized scooters are available to rent from the zoo's gift shop for $25. Scooters are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Photo I.D. required.

Wagon Rentals

Wagons are available to rent from the zoo's gift shop for $10.00. Wagons are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Photo I.D. required.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are available to rent from the zoo's gift shop for $5, on a first-come, first-served basis. Photo I.D. required.

Dining

Enjoy lunch or a snack at the ROAR Café. Open daily all year. Ask Admissions team for hours. 

Concessions, including pizza and grab-and-go items, can also be found in the Gift Shop.

Shopping

No visit to the Zoo is complete without a trip to the Gift Shop! There you’ll find a large assortment of plush animals, clothing, games, and jewelry. Grab and go snack and beverage items are also available in the Gift Shop.

Service Animal Map

Code of Conduct

The safety of our guests, team members, and animals is our top priority. To ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience – physically and emotionally, we expect everyone to follow these rules while on zoo grounds.

Weapons, including all firearms, are prohibited on zoo grounds.

Photo and video shoots occur often at the zoo and Butterfly House & Aquarium. Be aware that any guest could appear on social media, Zoolife.tv, marketing materials, or other media.  

Respect for People

  • Threats or acts of physical violence, including intimidation, harassment, and/or coercion will not be tolerated.
  • Discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status will not be tolerated.
  • Clothing featuring Confederate flags, swastikas, profanity, or other symbols or language associated with hate speech are not allowed.
  • Smoking, vaping, and drug use are prohibited on zoo grounds.

Respect for Animals

  • Do not harass or yell at animals or tap/bang on habitats to get the animals’ attention.
  • Do not feed the animals or toss any objects into their enclosures. This includes geese, squirrels, and other animals on zoo grounds. Farm animals may be fed only with the food available in designated feeders.
  • Barriers are placed throughout the zoo for the safety of guests and animals. Do not climb on or move barriers, or hold children over them.
  • Climbing, sitting, or setting children on railings is prohibited.

If you observe behavior not in compliance with the Code of Conduct, or if you have questions, call (605) 367-7003 ex. 110 or alert zoo staff.

Failure to comply with this code of conduct will result in removal from the zoo and/or intervention by the Sioux Falls Police Department, in addition to possible prosecution under the following South Dakota codified law(s).

22-35-5. Criminal trespass--Violation as misdemeanor.

Any person who, knowing that he or she is not privileged to do so, enters or remains in any building or structure surreptitiously, or enters or remains in any critical infrastructure facility, is guilty of criminal trespass. Criminal trespass is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

22-35-6. Entering or refusing to leave property after notice--Misdemeanor.

Any person who, knowing that he or she is not privileged to do so, enters or remains in any place where notice against trespass is given by:

  1. Actual communication to the person who subsequently commits the trespass;
  2. Posting in a manner reasonably likely to come to the attention of trespassers; or
  3. Fencing or other enclosure which a reasonable person would recognize as being designed to exclude trespassers is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. However, if such trespasser defies an order to leave, personally communicated to him or her by the owner of the premises or by any other authorized person, the trespasser is guilty of criminal trespass, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Private Cart Tours

Enjoy a Private Golf Cart Tour of the Zoo! (May 31 - Aug 11)

Interested in a Private Cart Tour after Labor Day? Contact the Education department at [email protected] or call 605.367.8313 x233 to book! (Must schedule two days in advance.)

Join one of our knowledgeable guides on a private 35-minute ride around the zoo, stopping at several animal exhibits (no hopping on and off, must stay in the vehicle for the duration of the tour). A snack will be provided during the tour.

Tours are $40 for members and $45 for non-members (zoo admission not included). Tickets include up to 4 people and are available online or in person at the gift shop. Online ticket sales will close 5 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

Tours are available daily beginning on May 31. Tours are not available on July 26 or August 10.

Tours begin at 10 am and depart every hour - no 12 pm tours. The final tour each day is 4 pm. Meet in the Plaza, in front of the Komodo dragon.

Field Trips

A trip to the zoo offers students a chance to learn about the world around them in a living classroom!

Learn about the critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros and why their horns have contributed to their demise. Discover how giraffes use their 18-inch-long tongues to get food. Find out how special markings called "follow me spots" help Amur tiger cubs find their mothers in the forest. For a unique experience, add an animal encounter, which will allow your students to get up-close to two animal ambassadors.
